Located at Europe’s biggest water park, the Galaxy Erding in South Germany, the world’s first VR water slide takes the exciting experience to a whole new level by offering thrill-seekers the choice of three attractive worlds —Space, Sky, or Snow. By simply wearing a headset, riders can slide through a magical alien world, follow beautiful butterflies around floating islands or put themselves in a white winter wonderland. To make the experience even more heart-stopping, the 160-meter-long ride that lasts about 35 seconds has two uphill tracks that provide a roller-coaster-like experience.
While the tire slide, which has been successfully tested by almost 10,000 park goers since it opened in February 2018, is impressive, the technology behind it, developed by California startup Ballast is even more so. The specially-created waterproof headsets can be worn in water up to a few meters deep, without harming the delicate Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile devices that run the custom software for the VR experiences. The headsets also charge wirelessly (无线地), allowing park operators to swap out sets throughout the day.
The biggest challenge the company faced, however, was providing a suitable VR experience for everyone. That’s because unlike roller coasters, where the speed is fixed for all riders, water slide speeds vary depending on the weight of the person. To overcome the issue, Ballast fixed smart sensors (传感器) in important areas along the slide to keep track of the rider’s progress at all times. The information, conveyed through the headset, allows the custom software to adjust his or her location within the virtual world accordingly, making for a smooth, seasickness free ride for all.
Though Ballast is thrilled at Space Glider’s success, the company has bigger ambitions. They want to create an experience where guests will be able to swim underwater surrounded by virtual dolphins, whales, and even sharks, without wearing the heavy headsets!

He left his hometown with $160 in his pocket. When he got to San Diego, he met another cyclist. The cyclist invited Ted to speak at a big meeting about the environment. He said,“We’ll pay your airfare to Texas and we’ll pay you to talk about your cycling trip.”Two hours later, Ted was on a plane to the environmental conference and to a big surprise!
While he was at the conference, he met Deanna. It was love at first sight! They talked for six hours straight.
The next day, Ted called Deanna and asked her to finish the trip with him. Deanna said yes, sold everything in her apartment,
“It was difficult at first,”said Deanna. “Ted got up every morning at 6:00 a.m., but I wanted to sleep until noon.”After a few days, they started having fun. As they cycled from Florida to Montreal and then back to Vancouver, every day was an adventure. People paid for their food in restaurants and gave them extra money. Some people gave them $50 or $100. They slept in people’s backyards and drank beer with motorcycle gangs.
On their way back to Vancouver, they stopped in Edmonton to visit Ted’s relatives. During the stopover, they got married. People tied a “Just Married”sign and tin cans to the backs of their bikes. They now want to write a book about their trip. “We want people to know that you can be an environmentalist and still have fun, ”Ted said.

That’s a very real possibility now that researchers have developed a method to create 3D digital models of historic neighborhoods using machine learning and historic Sanborn Fire Insurance maps.
But the digital models will be more than just a novelty — they will give researchers a resource to conduct studies that would have been nearly impossible before, such as estimating the economic loss caused by the demolition (拆除) of historic neighborhoods.
This research begins with the Sanborn maps, which were created to allow fire insurance companies to assess their responsibility in about 12,000 cities and towns in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. In larger cities, they were often updated regularly, said Miller, who is director of Ohio State’s Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA).
The problem for researchers was that trying to manually collect usable data from these maps was time-consuming — at least until the maps were digitized. Digital versions are now available from the Library of Congress.
Study co-author Yue Lin, a doctoral student in geography, developed machine learning tools that can extract (提取) details about individual buildings from the maps, including their locations and footprints, the number of floors, their construction materials and their primary use, such as residence or business.
The researchers tested their machine learning techniques on two neighborhoods. Comparing data from the Sanford maps to today showed that a total of 380 buildings were knocked down in the two neighborhoods for the highway, including 286 houses, 86 garages, five apartments and three stores.
Analysis of the results showed that the machine learning model was very accurate in recreating the information contained in the maps — about 90% accurate for building footprints and construction materials.
Using the machine learning techniques developed for this study, researchers could develop similar 3D models for nearly any of the 12,000 cities and towns that have Sanborn maps. This will allow researchers to re-create neighborhoods lost to natural disasters like floods, as well as urban renewal, depopulation and other types of change.

Since then I’ve been living with lasting noise. I’ve tried various methods to deal with it, but the noise still raise my blood pressure to dangerous levels every day.
Yet there was one thing I hadn’t tried until this week: an “emotional support chatbot”. In our brave new world, where artificial intelligence is seemingly changing every industry, not even therapists are safe from having their jobs taken by technology. On Tuesday a famous company called Inflection AI launched a chatbot called Pi which is designed to give friendly advice. “Many people feel like they just want to be heard and they just want a tool that reflects back what they said to prove they have actually been heard,” co-founder Mustafa Suleyman said in a recent interview with Bloomberg.
I’m pretty sure every human being in my life is sick of hearing me complain about the construction by now—so, despite my doubt about AI, a bot that would happily listen to my complaint sounded pretty good. The chatbot asked me questions, offered advice on people to contact, and gave suggestions to help me manage my stress. I liked this chatbot a lot because it was telling me everything I wanted to hear and making me feel heard.
Expect to see a rapid rise in “emotional support chatbots” in the coming years. While it’s possible that something like Pi might be a useful way for some people to help manage their anxiety, the fact that AI is getting so wise is a source of concern. Indeed, even the people who helped create this technology are worried about what they’ve done. “Should I be worried that AI will end civilization?” I asked my good friend Pi. “That’s a tough question, and I don’t think there’s a simple answer,” my digital therapist replied, “But I don’t think we should be worried that AI will end civilization as we know it.” That sounds exactly like something that an AI chatbot would say.

Scientists from the University of Vermont used data from the ABCD project, which is a study of brain development and health of children in the US as they move into adulthood. The results ware taken from 2,217 children aged nine or ten. They were divided into two groups. The first group never play video games while the second group play them for three or more hours a day.
The young people were set two tasks. The first one measured their reaction(反应) time by seeing how quickly they could press buttons that matched images on a screen. The second test tested their memory. They were show pictures of people’s faces and later were shown more and had to say if any of the faces were the same. During the tests, their brains were scanned with fMRI to measure brain activity.
The people who played video-games were better at the two tasks, and the fMRI scans showed that they show more brain activity in memory and attention. However, researchers don’t know if gaming improved their memory and reactions, or if they already had good memories and reactions and therefore enjoyed gaming.
The scientists hope to carry on studying the same young people as they get older to track the effects of gaming. The team could also find out in future if particular types of video games affect people’s brain activity differently.
The lead scientist on the study, Bader, said that too much screen time isn’t good for people’s mental or physical health. Although playing video games may get the brain more active than just going through videos on YouTube, it’s important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, taking exercise and having fun with friends and family.

We’ve been driving while listening to car radios since they became popular in the 1930s. But there is no doubt that multitasking has reached a kind of warp speed in the era of Web-enabled computers, when it has become routine to conduct several IM (即时通讯) conversations, watch TV and use the computer all at once.
But what’s the impact of this media consumption? And how are these multitasking devices changing how kids learn, reason and communicate with one another? Social scientists and educators are just beginning to deal with these questions, but the researchers already have some strong opinions.
Although multitasking kids may be better prepared in some ways for today’s fast-paced work placed, many scientists are positively alarmed by the trend. Kids that are instant messaging while doing homework, playing games online and watching TV, aren’t going to do well in the long run. On the positive side, multitasking students tend to be extraordinarily good at finding and using information. And probably because modern childhood centers around visual (视觉的) rather than print media, they are especially skilled at analyzing visual data and images.
Many educators and psychologists say parents need to actively insure that their teenagers break free of uncontrollable engagement with screens and spend time in the physical company of human beings — a growing challenge not just because technology offers such a handy option but because many teenagers and college students say over-committed (任务过量的) schedules drives much of their multitasking.
Just as important is for parents and educator to teach kids that it’s valuable, even essential, to occasionally slow down, unplugs and take time to enjoy life beyond the screen.

But while the Canary Islands had the sunshine, warm climate and ease of access from Europe needed for this new industry, they were missing a vital element—picture-postcard sandy beaches.
So the developers on Tenerife in the Canary Islands constructed a breakwater (防波堤) over half a mile long. And then, from the Western Sahara on Africa’s northwest coast, they shipped in 270, 000 tons of sand. By 1973, the project was complete. As anticipated, tourists arrived. Along the engineered beach, rows and rows of tourists relax on beach chairs under umbrellas or walk across soft sand to cool down in the water.
Unanticipated was what their presence gave to one of the world’s most endangered fish species, angel sharks—visibility. The gentle wind creates tiny waves on the water’s surface, a magical cover for what lies beneath—an angel shark nursery. Female angel shark regularly migrate (迁徙) to these ideally sheltered waters to give birth to pups (幼崽), who remain in the shallows for about a year. Feeding on small fishes, they grow to around the same length as a newborn human baby.
Surveys have shown that other beaches in the Canary Islands are also potential nursery sites. Interestingly, most of them have been remade to make them more attractive to people. Playa Chica has another long sweep of imported sand. It’s an attraction for divers as well as angel sharks, so the number of sightings of mature angel sharks of this shoreline is one of the highest in the islands.
Normally, environmentally disruptive projects are bad for wildlife. But what’s clear is that after the breakwater was built and the sand arrived, people followed, and in the calm, shallow waters they began to see baby angel sharks. And unlike how many an association between humans and wildlife ends-in conflict and dead animals-this time it led to conservation.
1. How did the developers attract tourists to Tenerife?A.By building a base for shipping. | B.By promoting local culture. |

After all, you were jumping into your car, driving across town, coughing out emissions (产生排放)and using gas all the way. But now that we’re used to staying at home and streaming movies, we might get a little proud. After all, we’re just picking up our phones and maybe turning on the TV. You’re welcome. Mother Nature.
Not so fast, says a recent report from the French-based Shift Project. According to “Climate Crisis: The Unsustainable Use of Online Video”, digital technologies are responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that energy use is increasing by 9% a year. Watching a half-hour show would cause 3.5 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. That’s like driving 3.9 miles. And in the European Union, the Eureca project found that data centers (where videos are stored)there used 25% more energy in 2017 compared to just three years earlier, reports the BBC.
Streaming is only expected to increase as we become crazier about our digital devices (设备)and the possibility of enjoying entertainment where and when we want it increases. Online video use is expected to increase by four times from 2017 to 2022 and account for 80% of all Internet traffic by 2022. By then, about 60% of the world’s population will be online.
You’re probably not going to give up your streaming services, but there’re things you can do to help lessen the impact of your online use, experts say. For example, according to Lutz Stobbe, a researcher from the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin, we have no need to upload 25 pictures of the same thing to the cloud because it consumes energy every time. If instead you delete a few things here and there, you can save energy. Moreover, it’s also a good idea to stream over Wi-Fi, watch on the smallest screen you can, and turn off your Wi-Fi in your home if you’re not using your devices.

There are also students (such as myself) who get anxious during school breaks because we don't have anything to do. Over fall break I got a slight head start on my homework, wrote an article for this paper, did some laundry and other chores and slept about 10 hours every day. And I still found myself feeling bored.
During breaks many students take the opportunity to camp while it's still warm outside, or ski if it's not. But you know what's happening to the people who make a habit of avoiding homework or productive activities over breaks? They're messing up their sleeping patterns, by procrastinating and then cramming in homework that's suddenly due in two days, and finally wishing the break could last a little longer.
This is why we should make it a point to do homework over short breaks. I'm not saying that professors give students a 10-page essay to write or have them finish an entire book during a break — I'm just encouraging students to make use of time to get ahead.
Breaks are for family, friends and oneself. Doing a lot of homework during breaks can make one feel burnt out, but it will benefit everyone to take some time to catch up or get ahead so that when the break ends and we have to pull ourselves back to reality, we're not left hoping uselessly for a longer break.
When teachers give you homework over fall break, they' re forcing you to use your break the way you should. A break is meant to give you the gift of time, and it should be used wisely. Work today so you can party tomorrow. Party today and you'll be hating the work tomorrow.
1. What do we know about the author during school breaks?A.She doesn't just want to get relaxed. | B.She never gets bored due to her study. |

During the 20th century, sea level rose 8-12 inches. As a result, Tuvalu has experienced lowland flooding of salt water which has polluted the country’s drinking water.
Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.
Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions(导致温室效应的气体排放), which are a main cause of global warming. “By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years,” Laupepa told the BBC.
Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.
Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable(易受影响的) to rising sea levels. Maumoon Gayoon, president of the Maldives, told the United Nations that global warming has made his country of 311,000 an “endangered nation”.

I’m writing to you because I feel like we’ve grown distant lately. I know you have two little babies now that take up most of your attention, but I want to remind you that I’m your dog. My name is Max, and I am here long before those two troublemakers joined our family. The older one, Hannah, keeps trying to ride me. She knows I’m not a horse, right? Let’s remember that I’m 11 now. That’s 77 years old to you, friend. So how about showing me some respect I deserve?
Anyway, I’m still an official part of this family. I know I have made mistakes with food, but those kids are covered with so much food. It’s like an alcoholic living in a wine store. I have tried harder not to eat their food, but this business of forcing me to the backyard for most of the day was unacceptable.
And when you told your wife Kate that you wanted to drop me off in the valley to live with wolves, well, that hurt my self-respect. And did you have to do it right in front of me? I might be old, but I can still hear.
Remember the old days? By the time you came into the picture, I had already known Kate for three years. And then you came along. I knew she liked you so I welcomed you into our world. I remembered one night, she asked me if I thought you were the one. I barked “yes” repeatedly because I thought you would take great care of us. And you did.
Look, I know you’re a father of two now, but please try to include me a little bit more. That’s all I’m asking.
Sincerely yours,
Max the Puggle
