China’s popular “Singles’Day”, better known as “Double Eleven”, started out as a day to celebrate singles symbolized by the four number ones on the date of November 11.
With time that meaning has changed. In 2009, China’s e-commerce leader Alibaba set the day as a lucky shopping day for online sales as the date was both easy to remember and perfectly timed as it hit between the consumer spending lull (间歇) between National Day and Chinese New Year. It soon became a hit, and Double Eleven became a buying frenzy (疯狂) spread across the world’s second largest economy.
In 2019, the Double Eleven Shopping Festival entered its eleventh year. During this decade, Alibaba, Chinese e-commerce giant, and other e-commerce platforms, together with consumers, have co-created a very big shopping event whose heat has swept the world. Foreign readers share their ideas on Singles’ Day in China:
GhostBuster (UK) I think Double Eleven is unbelievable. It is not a religious festival that people of the same religion but living in different countries share. As an e-commerce faithful fan, I really love the shopping festival.
Emanreus (Australia) I work in Shanghai. Many of my young female colleagues are still single. They simply haven’t time to date, as they tend to work long hours then travel two hours by subway to get to and from work. Single’s Day is a day when they give themselves a treat with online shopping.
BlondeAmber (Ireland) There is not hing to be proud of to be in a country that spends so much online on a particular day. It does nothing more than show the superficiality (肤浅) of the temporary pleasure of shopping, and produces nothing more than a mountain of environmental waste. I bet there is plenty of buyers’ deep regret after this day.
Ionstar (US) Singles Day became a big deal for Valentine’s Day not for the singles! Well, Alibaba’s 11. 11 has become more famous and important than that of Black Friday and Cyber Monday!

Response to a sneeze
“A-CHOO!”
The Russian response to a sneeze is, “Good health to you!” This goes back to more superstitious times when a sneeze was believed to separate the soul from the body. To prevent the devil from stealing the soul, the words “bless you” was said to free the soul from the devil and return it to its rightful owner, according to The Guardian. But things get a bit more interesting if you sneeze while someone else is talking. If that happens, the interrupted speaker will often say, “I’m telling the truth.”
Don’t whistle
Another widespread Russian saying goes, “Do not whistle — there will be no money.” One might think that whistling a song sounds cheerful. However, it’s not recommended for you to show your whistling talents under a roof in front of Russians, or they might express concerns over your bank account, according to The Moscow Times. In Russia, people believe whistling attracts evil spirits. Even more, sailors are careful not to whistle on a ship, for the fear of attracting violent storms.
Sauna
Russia’s winter is icy cold, with the lowest temperature even reaching -70℃. Visiting a sauna is a popular winter activity for Russians. The first step in a Russian sauna involves washing the body with ice water, followed by high-temperature steam. In order to prevent the hot steam from hurting the scalp (头皮) and ears, they may wear a thick hat. After that, Russians may take a cold bath or swim in icy pools. In a traditional Russian winter sauna, people will run out of the sauna room and roll in the snow to strengthen their bodies. For Russians, it is more than just a sauna. It’s a tradition for socializing and keeping friendships strong.

B.Because they think you are not telling the truth. |

A.You’ll be cheerful by whistling. | B.You’ll draw devils and be badly off. |

Quebec City
Quebec City would be a great place to spend the holidays, with stone streets, soft white snow, and some of the most historic and striking architecture in Canada. And there's a lot going on in the capital of La Belle Province, including an authentic German Christmas market where you can drink hot wine and look for gifts, and the chance to meet Santa Claus himself at Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac Hotel.
St. John's, Newfoundland
In St. John's, Newfoundland, people would disguise (伪装)themselves in whatever small objects they could find in their homes and show up on their neighbours doorsteps singing, dancing and celebrating—and not removing their masks until the neighbours correctly guessed their identities. This fun and festive tradition lives on with an annual Christmas festival, complete with workshops and a big parade that shows these simple disguises.
Niagara Falls, Ontario
The illumination (照明)of the magnificent waterfalls is part of Niagara Falls' annual Winter Festival of Lights, which sees more than three million lights lighted throughout the city. There are also weekly fireworks over the falls during the whole festival, and a number of other festive events, including musicals, shopping fairs and concerts.
Saskatoon
There are few bigger thrills than being a kid at Christmas, especially if you live in Saskatoon. A recent study by the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management found that Saskatoon has the highest number of candy and toy stores, in the country, and a very good probability of having snow on December 25. This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival. “People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation,” Riedel said. “It’s really easy to relax, and it’s great seeing family and friends have fun together.” These families and friends come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there, so are people who love Bluegrass. This festival does its best to develop everyone's musical interests.
With so many years of experience, the festival has become a well-oiled machine, and does whatever it can to make attendees feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the venue (举办地)for people to fill up their travel cups. When people buy food, reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee, but that is returned when the plate is brought back.
The festival has completely sold out of tickets, and in record time. But with big names such as Van Morrison and Jakob Dylan, it’s easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is highly recommended. A bike lock-up area is provided and will be available Thursday until Sunday one hour before the gates open until 45 minutes after the gates close.
The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday, Aug.4 with Van Morrison playing the special donation fund concert, and will finish up on Sunday, Aug.8.

A window-mounted bird feederOne way to guarantee a close-up look at the birds in your garden is to bring them all the way to the house. This bird feeder is solidly built with strong suction (吸) cups that you can tie to your windows, giving you a good view of your winged visitors.
A pair of binocularsBinoculars are a birdwatcher’s best friend! They’re perfect for spotting feathered friends in the wild, whether the birds are high up in the trees or soaring across the sky. When you peer through them, you get a view that makes every little detail of the birds—their colors, beaks, and even the texture of their feathers.

That is not to say that there are no cool shirts out there for girls to wear. The problem is that they are often harder to find than the ones for boys.
You can get custom (订制的) shirt printed for girls from a number of custom print stores. Of course you have to make sure that they are legally allowed to use the logos (商标) and colours of the team you want to support.
You can also go through official channels to get the shirt you want. The official channels will generally be the large sportswear stores or the official stores of the teams. These stores will be able to use the colours of the teams and even put the name of the person who the shirt is for on it.
If you do not feel like you have to try the T-shirts on, then an online store may be your best choice. The reason for this is that you can visit various stores and find the best ones.
If you want to see what the T-shirt looks like in real life, then going to a store is the best choice. Large sportswear stores often have football shirts. Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
1. In the state of zoochosis, animals _________.A.remain in cages | B.behave strangely |

Animals can help people, too. Dogs can be taught to become the “eyes” for a blind person or “ears” for a deaf people. Scientists have found that pets help people live longer! They make people happier, too. Because of that, animals are brought into hospitals for “visit”.
Americans hold “Be-Kind-to-Animals Week” in the first week of May.
Pets shows are held during the week. Even if you don’t live in America, you, too, can do this. How? First, think about how animals make your life richer. If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. Remember to give it delicious food. Also, be sure to keep your pet from those unwanted babies.
If you don’t have a pet, be kind to animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, don’t kick it or throw things at it. Instead, just leave it alone, or better yet, make friends with it. If others around you do bad things to an animal, try to stop them. As people, we must protect animals who can’t speak for themselves.

When she wasn’t working in the theatre, she began volunteering at Evergreen, a drop-in centre that supports homeless youth. Soon working with youth became her biggest role. In 1996, Phyllis Novak and Sue Cohen, a fellow artist, founded Sketch Working Arts, a charity with a mission to improve the lives of homeless and marginalized (边缘化的) youth through creativity.
Sketch’s programs help participants dig a power they didn’t know they had. Novak believes the arts provide skills to tackle homelessness, as well as the economic and social discrimination.
Sketch’s large space offers free programs that fall into three categories. Each is structured around season-long semesters and offered to anyone between the ages of 16 and 29 who is homeless or wrestling with poverty. The arts-wellness branch provides basic needs, like food, and offers a general introduction to creating art. An arts-production stream provides classes in specific disciplines, such as visual arts and music. Those interested in a full-time arts career can choose arts leadership, which offers mentorship (师徒制) and the opportunity to work on community-arts projects and education.
When Kut Throat Kleo first joined Sketch’s programs as a participant in 2019, she had a love for music and fashion but no way to explore either. As a Muslim person of colour, she also dealt with prejudice and occasional stretches of homelessness. At Sketch, she had free access to a music studio and a silkscreen-printing program. The 25-year-old now works at Sketch. Using her silkscreening skills, she also runs a clothing label that sells clothes. She now earns enough to secure stable housing in Toronto and says she wouldn’t have the life she has today without Sketch.
When the pandemic hit, Novak kept Sketch going with virtual offerings. In 2021, nearly 700 people participated in Sketch’s virtual programs. Sketch directed nearly $70,000, as well as free cellphones and tablets, to support young artists and keep them connected.
This year, the organization is planning a party for its 25th anniversary. Novak is optimistic that Sketch will fully reopen this spring, COVID permitting. “Sketch is empty for now, but I know that hope and creative energy will return.” she says.

【推荐3】On Sunday, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia shocked the running world by breaking the women’s world record for the marathon by over two minutes. Assefa finished the Berlin Marathon in just 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds.
But Assefa’s record was far beyond what most people expected. After all, it was only her third time running a marathon.
“I wanted to break the marathon world record,” she said, “But I couldn’t imagine that it would result in a time under 2:12.”
When Assefa was younger, she started by running short races, called sprints. Then she became a middle-distance runner, running the 800 meters (half mile) race. Her best time in the 800 meters was 1 minute and 59 seconds.
Last March, she ran her first marathon. Then last September, she entered the Berlin Marathon. She won, and set a new women’s record for the course, finishing in 2:15:37.
This year, she ran almost four minutes faster than she did last year. In both races, Assefa ran faster in the second half of the race than she did in the first half.
Her time of 2:11:53 was over two minutes faster than the old women’s record (2:14:04), which was set in Chicago in 2019 by Brigid Kosgei of Kenya.
When she finished the race, Assefa kneeled down and kissed the pavement before raising her arms in victory.
