Thoughts about comfort foods are often linked to calories, warmth or a sense of well-being, but what we don’t think about is that they also provide something social to us. People like comfort foods because of their ability to make them feel that they belong.
When Marcel Proust, author of Remembrance of Things Past, bit into a cake at his aunt’s house, he was overwhelmed by a feeling of nostalgia. Where had this “all-powerful joy ” come from? He sensed that it was connected to the taste of tea and cake, but it “ went far beyond” those flavors, he wrote. In Proust’s case, the taste he experienced took him back to childhood experiences with a beloved aunt, to whom he formed a strong bond.
Comfort foods are often thought of as being rich in calories or full of sugar. Nevertheless, other studies have also shown that the line between comfort and food isn’t as clear as “ junk food = happiness. ” Eating so-called junk food does activate the brain’s reward system, but that high is short-lived. It’s not the deep reward of real comfort. On the other hand, if you feel bad, you might as well have a salad, as long as there is something in the food to bring back pleasant memories and create a sense of belonging. Taste and smell, Proust wrote, “ stay fresh a long time. ”
1. How do comfort foods function?A.They inspire a sense of belonging. | B.They are linked to all-powerful joy. |
C.They provide the calories one needs. | D.They set off the brain’s reward system. |
A.To express love for a special cake. | B.To share a good childhood memory. |
C.To. show the nature of comfort foods. | D.To prove a popular belief about foods. |

B.The connection between junk food and happiness. |
C.The difference between comfort foods and junk food. |

Genetics (遗传学) is the science of what makes you who you are. People who study genetics, called geneticists, learn about how parents pass on information through their genes (bits of information in your body that you cannot see) to their children. Is there anyone in the world like you? No! Your eye color, how tall you are and the size of your nose all come from the special information in your genes that makes you different from everyone else.
We get our genes from our parents. So genetics explains why you might look similar to your mother or brother and why you like some of the same things or speak in a similar way. Genes come in pairs-you get half from your mother and half from your father. We know that some genes are stronger than others. For example, the gene for brown eyes is stronger than the gene for blue eyes. So does it mean that if your parents both have brown eyes that you do too? Not always.
Because genes come in pairs, it's possible that someone with brown eyes has the gene for both brown eyes(B) and blue eyes (b). Look at the picture on the right that shows how the genes from Mum and Dad might be passed on to their children.
Why is genetics important? It's fun to think about which family members you are similar to and which genes you have, but studying genetics is also very important for our health. Some diseases are in our genes, so studying genetics can help us know if we might become ill in the future. It also helps doctors and scientists to know what medicine might help that disease.
1. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.What genetics is. |
B.What geneticists learn about. |
C.How the size of your nose comes from. |
D.How parents pass on information to their children. |
A.Why you look like your friends. |
B.Why you are different from other people. |
C.Why parents pass on information to their children. |
D.Why many people in the world look exactly the same. |
A.Our genes come in pairs. |
B.Some genes are longer than others. |
C.People get their genes mainly from their mothers. |
D.Your parents both have brown eyes that you do too. |
A.Because it is very funny. | B.Because it is useful for scientists. |
C.Because it can help us fight diseases. | D.Because it can help us make medicine. |
【推荐3】You may have heard of the Tasmanian tiger — but you most certainly have never seen one. Along with many other species over the past hundred years, this creature became extinct because of humans. Now, scientists in Australia and the US are trying to bring it back to life.
Bringing species back from the dead is known as de extinction. Though it sounds like something from a science fiction movie, new technologies have made de-extinction a very real possibility. To “bring back” an extinct species, scientists take stem cells from a closely related living animal and edit the genes. Then, the cells grow into a new animal. This new animal is not an exact copy of the extinct one, but it’s very close. In theory, scientists could create entire populations of animals and set them free in the wild.
If successful, the de-extinction project in Australia could have a favorable impact on the environment. Tasmanian tigers could help bring balance to Australia’s remaining forests by hunting and killing animals that are harming the trees. Indeed, something similar happened when wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone Park in 1995, with deer and plant populations rebalanced as a result.
De-extinction is not a perfect solution, however. For one thing, it won’t change the human behaviors that cause animals to become extinct in the first place. If we continue polluting and destroying the environment, animals will continue to die out. The only way we can truly protect them is by changing our habits. Bringing extinct species back to life won’t magically make us respect nature more.
Also, the money that we spend on de-extinction would probably be better spent on other conservation projects. Or, as those against de-extinction would put it, it’s better to spend money on the living rather than the dead. The reason for this is that, compared to other efforts, de-extinction is extremely expensive. In fact, for the cost of bringing one extinct species back to life, traditional conservation efforts could save up to eight threatened ones.
The power of science is amazing, but it might be time for us to stop and decide whether de-extinction is something we really want to achieve. With the technology we currently have, the question is no longer “can we?” but “should we?”
1. Why does the writer mention “wolves introduced to Yellowstone Park”?A.To test the effect of de-extinction. | B.To discuss the importance of de extinction. |
C.To illustrate the possible effect of de-extinction. | D.To present a successful example of de-extinction. |
A.It demands large expenses. | B.It helps adjust human behaviours. |
C.It threatens the current ecosystem. | D.It restores the balance between humans and nature. |
A.Neutral. | B.Opposed. | C.Supportive. | D.Unconcerned. |

Dan Susk, 30-year-old IT professional from San Francisco, said he had been fishing in rough seas with help from his sister, Kate Suski, a 39-year-old architect, when the ship began to sink on 21April. Water flooded the engine room. The captain threw life jackets to the Suski and said, “Jump out! Jump out!” The Suski obeyed and jumped into the water with the captain and the first mate (大副). Less than five minutes later the boat sank. They were at least eight mile was telling us to stay together, and that help was on its way and that we needed to wait, Kate Suski said. After an hour, when no help came, the Suski decided to swim for it and lost sight of the captain and the first mate.
A helicopter appeared in the distance but no one spotted them. Several hours went by, and the sun began to set. “There’s this very real understanding that the situation is dire,” Kate Suski said both considered the possible ways we might die. Would we drown? Be eaten by a shark? Would our legs give out and make it impossible to swim?

When in the moonlight they finally came within about 10 meters of land they realized that they were looking at steep rocky cliffs and would be beaten to death against them if they tried to approach any closer. 【推荐3】I recently spent half a weekend sitting on the sofa watching the Davis Cup. I thought about going for a run, but I did not want to miss the rest of the match. Soon it was starting to get dark, so I did not bother. Whenever I watch tennis, I think how nice it would be to play it regularly. But I have been thinking that for almost 20 years without actually setting foot on a court. The evidence would suggest that I'm not the only one.
When a country or city bids to host an international sporting event, it often promises that more people will take up sports as a result. London was no exception. In the end it did not turn out quite like that. Just over one-third of people in Britain take part in sports once a week. A report on Olympic legacy (后续)has said that a big change in participation levels simply has not happened.
Why isn't there a big increase in people taking part in sports after most sporting events? Perhaps it is a mistake to assume an automatic link between watching sports and playing it. While the games are on, they actually encourage people to do just the opposite — to spend whole sunny days not out playing sports, but inside sitting on the sofa with the curtains shut to stop the sun shining on the TV screen and spoiling the view. We don't expect half the audience of a hit musical to apply to drama school the next day, yet we seem to expect it of sporting events.
We might have sat on the sofa doing an impression of Usain Bolt's bow — and — arrow signature pose. But how many of us have been inspired by watching him sprint (短跑)100 meters? The high-level performances on show only remind people that they could never match the elite (精英)athletes in their sporting achievements even if they trained full time.
Maybe participation in sports is not the right legacy to expect after a major sporting event. It's not so much that the Olympics failed to get people to participate but rather that this was never going to be the result. The Olympics can do many things, but maybe this cannot necessarily be one of them.
1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A.The author prefers playing tennis to running. |
B.The author watches tennis matches very rarely. |

① it takes people a longer time to play sports than watch it
② watching sports actually discourages people from going out
