What color is a tennis ball? Ask your classmates, and they might give you some surprising answers.

US magazine The Atlantic recently asked 30,000 people this question. Among them, 52 percent said tennis balls are green, 42 percent said they are yellow, and 6 percent went with other colors. According to the International Tennis Federation, tennis balls are yellow.     1

Scientists call this color constancy (色彩恒常性). For example, we know that China's flag is red. When we see it during sunset or under purple light, we still know that it is red, even if it looks like a different color.     2     Even if the object is seen in different kinds of light later, our brain can still tell its true color.

3     It appears to be a combination of yellow, a ''warm'' color and green, a ''cool'' color.

According to The Atlantic, when our brains try to figure out what color the ball is, some people ignore ''cool'' colors, such as green, blue and purple. So they see the ball as being yellow.    4     They see the ball as being green.

5     In 2015, a girl posted a picture of a dress online. Some people believed the dress was black and blue—but others thought it was gold and white. They had different opinions based on whether they ignored ''cold'' or ''warm'' colors.

A.It is not just tennis balls that have such a confusing color.
B.But others ignore ''warm'' colors, such as red, yellow and orange.
C.However, the color of a tennis ball is not as pure as the flag.
D.It is difficult for some people to distinguish yellow from green.
E.So why did so many people say that they're green?
F.Certain parts of our brain are in charge of recognizing colors.
G.When we first see an object in natural light, our brains recognize its true color.

【推荐1】How do you wake up in the morning? If you set an alarm on your phone or clock that sounds like this: beep-beep-beep, that hard, unpleasant sound may be making it harder to shake off the sleepy feeling in the morning known as grogginess (昏昏沉沉).    1    ? A recent study says yes. The answer is music.

Researchers say alarms that have a melody can help people feel fresher in the morning. The study, carried out by researchers in Australia, involved 50 people. They answered questions about the alarm sound they like to wake up to.     2    .

Sleep inertia (惯性) is another term for grogginess.    3    , and has trouble getting moving again after sleeping. People need to better understand sleep inertia’s harmful effects on human performance later in the day. The grogginess we may feel in the morning usually lasts for up to 30 minutes, but some may last from two to four hours. Not everyone will experience the full effect.

4    , especially when they perform duties that require a top performance within this period or for people who work in dangerous situations shortly after they wake. So, what makes musical alarms better for waking up?    5    .

A.Possibly the different tones in it
B.Simply the single sound of “beeping”
C.So, is there a better way to wake up
D.So, what is a better way to wake up

【推荐2】Stars blazed(猛烈地燃烧)in the sky above Spook like a million tiny suns. They shone through the mists, which had during the last year become thinner and weaker. At first, he had thought the world itself was changing. Then he had realized that it was just his feeling. Somehow, by burning tin in his body for so long, he had permanently strengthened his senses to a point far beyond what other Allomancers could attain.

The burned tin had begun as a reaction to Clubs’s death. Spook still felt terrible about the way he’d escaped, leaving his uncle to die. During those first few weeks, Spook had burned his metals as almost a self-punishment he’d wanted to feel everything around him, take it all in, even though it was painful, or perhaps because it was painful.

But then he’d started to change, and that had worried him. But, the crew always talked about how hard Vin pushed herself. She rarely slept, using pewter(白镴)to keep herself awake and alert. Spook didn’t know how that worked he was no Mistborn, and could only bum one metal but he figured that if burning his one metal could give him an advantage, he’d better take it, because they were going to need every advantage they could get.

The starlight was like daylight to him. During the actual day, he had to wear a cloth tied across his eyes to protect them, and even then going outside was sometimes blinding. His skin had become so sensitive that each little stone in the ground felt like a knife jabbing(猛刺)him through the bottom of his feet. The cold spring air seemed freezing, and he wore a thick cloak(斗篷).

However, he had concluded that these discomforts were small prices to pay for the opportunity to become whatever it was he had become. As he moved down the street, he could hear people turning over and over in their beds, even through their walls. He could sense a footstep from yards away. He could see on a dark night as no other human ever had.

________________. Always before, he’d been the least important member of the crew the dismissible boy who served as a handy man or kept watch while the others made plans. He didn’t feel annoyed with them for that he’d been right to give him such simple duties. ________________. Because of his street dialect, he’d been difficult to understand, and while all the other members of the crew had been carefully picked, Spook had joined through the back door since he was Clubs’s nephew.

Spook sighed, sticking his hands in his trouser pockets as he walked down the too-bright street. He could feel each and every thread of the cloth.

Dangerous things were happening he knew that: the way the mists lasted longer during the day, the way the ground shook as if it were a sleeping man, periodically(周期性地)suffering a terrible dream. Spook worried he wouldn’t be of much help in the critical days to come. A little over a year before, his uncle had died after Spook fled the city. Spook had run out of fear, but also out of a knowledge of his lack of power. ________________. He wouldn’t have been able to help during the campaign.

He didn’t want to be in that position again. He wanted to be able to help, somehow. He wouldn’t run into the woods, hiding while the world ended around him. He was sent to gather as much information as he could about the Citizen and his government there, and so Spook intended to do his best. If that meant pushing his body beyond what was safe, so be it.

He approached a large crossing. He looked both ways down the intersecting(交叉的)streets the view clear as day to his eyes. I may not be Mistborn, and I may not be emperor, he thought. But I’m something. Something new. Something people would be proud of Maybe this time I can help. ________________.

【推荐3】Recently, Australian scientists tried a new tracker on the magpies. They hoped to learn more about how far the birds flew and what they did during a normal day. The scientists are concerned that magpies may have a hard time adjusting as the world warms up because of climate change.

Australian magpies are medium-sized black and white birds. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in. It’s hard to find trackers that work well with small and medium-sized birds. But the newly-produced trackers were light enough and could be recharged without wires while they were still on the birds. To keep the trackers on the birds without causing flying problems, the researchers developed a special harness. It was tough, so it wouldn’t come off by accident. But it had a special release controlled by magnets, which allows the scientists to free the birds from the harnesses at a special magnetic bird feeder, without having to catch the birds again.

The researchers placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. But just ten minutes after setting up the last magpie, they noticed something unusual: An adult female magpie was helping another magpie get free from its harness. In a few hours, most of the other magpies were also freed from their harnesses. By the third day, none of the birds had trackers anymore.

The scientists were disappointed about the trackers, but they realized that the magpies had taught them something else — that magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird who is helping doesn’t get a reward. This is called “rescue behavior”, and it’s not that common in the animal world, especially among birds. The researchers think this is the first time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies.

The researchers are glad they’ve learned about the rescue behavior of magpies. But now they need to try again to figure out a good way to track these clever birds.

1. Why did researchers attach trackers to magpies?
A.To learn more about magpies’ habits.B.To help them identify magpies clearly.
C.To precisely monitor magpies’flying route.D.To further explain what rescue behavior is.
2. What does the underlined word “harness” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Feather.B.Tracker.C.Belt.D.Recorder.
3. What are Australian magpies like?
A.Friendly but noisy.B.Cute but unhelpful.
C.Brave and playful.D.Smart and cooperative.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Climate Change Has Affected Magpies Badly
B.Magpies Teach Scientists an Unexpected Lesson
C.Researchers’ Understanding of Rescue Behavior
D.Findings About New Trackers on Australian Magpies
