A. in 1878 in the same exhibition where Alexander Graham Bell's telephone was displayed, and that banana is now the U. S. 's number one selling fruit.
The Hair Museum (Avanos, Turkey) is located in a cave in Cappadocia, in Central Anatolia. It contains 16,000 samples of people’s hair. You'll be offered a chance to add your own hair to the collection. Later in the year, the museum manager will select 10 donors to attend a pottery workshop.

U.S. history; a bullet train connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles, at a cost of $33 billion. For years, however people have watched the projected costs mount, with the last estimates over $75 billion.
On Tuesday, the governor of the state Gavin Newsom called for the state to scale back the project to a less costly rail that would run through the Central valley. California voters can stop seizing their wallets. But voters elsewhere should pay close attention, because what happened in California problem that face any U.S. rail project, or any infrastructure project that tries to meaningfully reshape U. S.
In other places of the world, major population centers are much closer to each other, which is a basic requirement far high-speed rail. Imagine what it would take to build a line from New York City to Los Angeles or to Chicago, Houston or Phoenix.
Of course, some cities look ripe for rail, but instead of high-speed rail between these cities, we have the Acela, which takes eight hours to travel from Washington to Boston and shakes like a maraca player. Why haven’t we built something better? Because truly high-speed rail needs to travel in a fairly straight line; you don’t want to be taking a sharp curve at 300 miles per hour. Building newer, better, straighter rail lines would require the government to buy all the land between Point A and Point B and tear down anything that happened to be in the way. But in fact, there are a great deal of highly valuable estates instead of farms.
For historical reasons, the U. S. legal system offers citizens rights with which they can attempt to block government projects. Any project bigger than painting a schoolhouse has to either fight out the constant reviews and court cases for years, or buy off the opponents.

The bridge took over a decade to construct. Builders had to make artificial islands (人工岛) in the Pearl River Delta (珠江三角洲) to provide the supports for the bridge. There is also a 6.7-kilometre underwater tunnel in the middle of the bridge. This is to allow ships to sail through the Delta. The new bridge is longer than 14 Golden Gate Bridges lined up end to end. The bridge will greatly cut the time it takes to travel from mainland China to Hong Kong and Macau. The journey time to Macau has been cut from over three hours to just 30 minutes.
Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the bridge on Thursday. He hopes the new crossing will help to connect 68 million people in 11 different cities. China’s government believes that up to 29,000 cars will cross the sea link daily by the year 2030. A trade and tourism expert said: “This makes Hong Kong a lot more accessible for goods, passengers and trade, so this is a benefit from the economic perspective.” The bridge will be open to tourists to drive across it. However, local car owners will not be able to cross the bridge unless they have a special permit. Most drivers will take a shuttle bus to make the journey. About 59% of engineering companies in the IET's 2014 survey feared skill shortages could threaten(威胁) business.
"There is nothing as creative as engineering," Sir John told the reporter. He says science, technology, engineering and mathematics - often known as "Stem" subjects, are vital for a modern knowledge economy. But there is a massive shortfall in the number of recruits(招聘) - with a recent study by the Royal Academy of Engineering saying the UK needs to increase by as much as 50% the number of Stem graduates it produces.
Delivering this year's Mountbatten Lecture at the Royal Institution,Sir John argued that engineers should recognise the role of the arts in their work - among other benefits; this could attract more people into the profession. The lecture,Full Steam Ahead for Growth, advocated a wider adoption -- Steam,or science, technology, engineering, arts and maths.Engineers should embrace the arts as being key to creativity and an important component of innovation(创新),crucial to creating new products and boosting future competitiveness,he argued. "Engineering and technology is an increasingly diverse and creative field," said Sir John.
Some university engineering departments already cooperated with art schools to develop understanding,he told the reporter. In particular he mentioned Cranfield University's Centre for Creative Competitive Design and Imperial College's work with the Royal College of Art.The two sets of people could work well together and more emphasis on the creative side of engineering could improve the success of products,he said.
"Aesthetics(美学) is part of it," he told the reporter, adding that Apple's iPod was not the first digital media player, nor the only one that worked - but it came to dominate the market "because it was nice to have".
Sir John said he was not suggesting universities started requiring A-level art from engineering applicants - the key subjects for admission would continue to be maths and the sciences. But an emphasis on creative skills would help "broaden the pool and attract more people in".

A Frenchman was once travelling in England. He could not speak English at all. One day he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, he opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took them out again. He wanted to say,"Bring me something to eat. "The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The man moved his head from side to side. The waiter understood him and took the tea away. In a moment he came with a cup of coffee. But the man again refused it. He shook his head whenever the waiter brought him something to drink, for drinks are not food. When the man was going away ,another man came in. This man saw the waiter, and he put his hands on his stomach(胃). That was enough. In a few minutes there was a large plate of meat and vegetables on the table in front of him,
So you see. we cannot understand the language of signs as well as we can understand the language of words.

In an experiment conducted by the Medical Research Council’s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge,40 subjects were asked to listen to a two-minute tape giving several names of people and places.Half of the participants were asked to shade in shapes on a piece of paper at the same time, without paying attention to neatness, while the rest were given no such instructions. After the tape had finished, all participants in the study were asked to recall the names of people and places. The doodlers recalled on average 7.5 names of people and places, compared to only 5.8 by the non—doodlers.
“If someone is doing a boring task, like listening to a dull telephone conversation, they may start to daydream.”said study researcher,Professor Jackie Andrade,of the School of Psychology,University of Plymouth.“Daydreaming distracts them from the task, resulting in poorer performance.A simple task, like doodling, may be enough to stop daydreaming without affecting performance on the main task.”
“In psychology, tests of memory or attention will often use a second task to selectively block a particular mental process. If that process is important for the main task, then performance will be weakened. But my research suggests that in everyday life doodling may be something we do because it helps to keep us on track with a boring, task, rather than being an unnecessary distraction(分心)that we should try to resist doing.”said Andrade.
Dan Ware,a social study teacher, used to consider doodling a distraction from learning, but after teaching kids with all personality types he learned scribbling away during lectures helps certain students remember more information.“In my first few years of teaching,I thought,‘Well, this kid isn’t paying attention. He’s daydreaming.’But I had some really powerful experiences with students and came to understand in many cases that was their way of focusing, and those students were probably paying more attention than other students.”Ware said.
1. What do we know about the participants involved in the experiment?A.Some were asked to note down the information neatly. |
B.Some were asked to memorize the names they would hear. |

Montreal is an international city with ties to Europe. Vancouver is a major city with a very strategic port. Quebec City is centrally located.
Why were none of these cities chosen to be the capital of Canada? As it turns out, choosing a capital city is more complicated than pointing to the biggest city on the map.
Ottawa was a good choice because it was centrally located between two other major contenders. Montreal (which was predominantly French) and York (now Toronto, which was predominantly British). These two cities were the largest in Ontario and Quebec, which were at the center of Canada in the middle of 19th century. Picking Ottawa was a good compromise, as the Queen did not want to appear to favor one major city over the other.
Also, unlike Toronto and Montreal, Ottawa was central but also a safe distance away from Canada’s southern neighbor, the United States. It meant the capital would be safer in the event the U.S. decided to attack again. After all, it had only been 40 years since the War of 1812 when American troops had invaded as a result of British interference(干涉) in shipping. Although America was unable to capture Canada, the invasion was costly for the British government, who was not about to let it happen again.
Hence, Ottawa was a great choice for the capital of Canada.
