Antiquities are ancient objects and artworks. Many people visit museums to view antiquities. They enjoy seeing these relics of the ancient world as a way of understanding past cultures and sometimes connecting with their own heritage.
Museums get works to show from many different sources. Sometimes they buy them. Other times they receive donations. Today there are strict guidelines forbidding art that has been stolen from other countries. However, antiquities that have been at museums for many years or even centuries may have arrived there by dishonest means. Now, some countries say that museums have a duty to return these antiquities to their original locations.
Should museums return the antiquities? Experts disagree. Malcolm Bell says yes. Bell is a professor of art at the University of Virginia. He says, “Many antiquities and works of art have special cultural value for a particular community or nation. When these works are taken from their original cultural setting, they lose their context and the culture loses a part of its history.”
According to Bell, a country’s request for the return of an antiquity “usually has a strong legal basis.” “It was exported (出口) illegally, probably also dug out illegally, and is now stolen property (财物).” He called the return of antiquities “an expression of justice”.
James Cuno says not always. Cuno is the president of the J. Paul Getty Trust, an art museum in Los Angeles. Cuno agrees that museums have a legal duty to return illegally exported antiquities. However, he doesn’t support the return of works which were got legally. “Land held today by a given nation-state in the past likely belonged to a different country...even if one wanted to return those stolen works of art, where would one do so? Which among the many countries, cities, and museums that own parts of a work of art should be the home of the returned work?” Cuno believes that museums should collect art from the world’s various cultures. This should be done “through buying or long-term loan (长期租借) and working together with museums and nations around the world.”
This debate is far from over. As a complex question with no easy answer, the issue requires more study.

In general, our culture, as represented in the media, gets excited by famous stars, and constantly stresses that it’s what you have, not what you are, that counts. Parents are encouraged to be away from even very small children for most of the day. Too many voters go for politicians who would rather cut school funding than to get rid of tax cuts for the wealthy. All contribute greatly to the problems of educating our children.
Today’s teachers have to deal with a culture that is vastly different than in the past. They report that there is, among more children than ever, a lack of motivation, no drive to succeed or even try. The role models that boys view in the media mostly consist of men in comedies and other shows who are rude and often extremely immature; self-centered overpaid athletes; men in movies, television dramas, video games, etc. who are preoccupied with violence and power. As Leonard Sax wrote in “Boys Adrift”, “Teenage boys are looking for models of mature adulthood, but we no longer make any collective effort to provide such models.” Girls are attacked not only with such annoying images of males, but also with women who are preoccupied with appearance and are extremely materialistic.
In such a cultural environment, it is more important than ever to have responsible, loving and caring parents who have enough time and motivation to devote to their children and see to it as their duty to model for them and raise them with high standards of honesty and responsibility along with tending to their physical needs. They need to care enough to see that their children are not attacked with the garbage that comes from movie, television and computer screens. In today’s culture, they are basically alone in this effort since, unfortunately, so much is working against them.
Until we, as a culture, face the truth about ourselves — that we are not providing adequately for a great many of our children — the storm will continue to rage over our education system.

And according to a new Pew Research Center survey on women and leadership, most Americans find no difference between women and men on key leadership qualities such as intelligence and capacity for innovation, with many saying they’re stronger than men in terms of being passionate and organized leaders.
So why, then, are women in short supply at the top of government and business in the United States? According to the public, at least, it’s not that they lack toughness, management talent or proper skill sets.
It’s also not all about work life balance. Although economic research and previous survey findings have shown that career interruptions related to motherhood may make it harder for women to advance in their careers and compete for top executive jobs, relatively few adults in the recent survey point to this as a key barrier for women seeking leadership roles. Only about 20% say women’s family responsibilities are a major reason why there aren’t more females in top leadership positions in business and politics.
Instead, topping the list of reasons, about 40% Americans point to a double standard for women hoping to climb to the highest levels of either politics or business, where they have to do more than their male workmates to prove themselves. Similar shares say the electorate (选民) and American companies are just not ready to put more women in top leadership positions.
As a result, the public is divided about whether the imbalance in American companies will change in the foreseeable future, even though women have made major advances in the workplace. While 53% believe men will continue to hold more top executive positions in business in the future, 44% say it’s only a matter of time before as many women are in top executive positions as men. Americans are less doubtful when it comes to politics: 73% expect to see a female president in their lifetime.

The Japanese government is offering money to families to move away from the city Tokyo. The scheme (方案) aims to encourage young people to move to less popular villages and towns around the edge s of the city. The scheme has been running for the last three years, but the government has recently announced that it is increasing the amount of money it is offering to 1 million yen per child. To be able to claim the money, however, families must move outside the greater Tokyo area, live in their new homes for at least five years and one person must be in work or plan to open a new business.
Japanese officials hope that the offer will encourage families with children aged up to 18 to bring life to villages. This will help ease some of the pressure on space and public services in the center of Tokyo. They hope around 10,000 people will move from Tokyo to the countryside around it by 2027.
There is, in fact, a growing trend of young Tokyo-dwellers (居民) who want to leave behind urban life in the city to move to smaller, cheaper, and quieter parts of Japan. The small ski town of Niseko in Hokkaido is also enjoying a small increase in population, thanks to an explosion of interest overseas in Japan’s ski slopes. But with Japan’s vast government bureaucracy, its top schools, as well as companies all concentrated in Tokyo, escaping the capital looks set to remain a day dream for most.

In the early 20th century, women began entering the workplace in large numbers. But only, women who worked in factories or on farms could wear trousers. ,Women, who worked in offices had to wear the skirts and jewellery expected of their, sex. In the. 1970s, women got the freedom to consider comfort and style in what they wore in the workplace. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, women often wore trouser suits, like men do.
They wanted to break the glass ceiling and, with the popular idea of dressing, for success, they wore suits with big shoulder pads(垫肩).
Today, what women wear in the workplace has as, many varieties as the jobs women do. However traditional standards for women's appearances still remain. In 2010, the Swiss bank UBS came under fire after its dress code got known, including detailed guidelines on applying makeup(化妆品) and avoiding small shoes that might cause women to have unnatural smiles. while there’re also dress codes. for men, they mainly represent professionalism. But to dress, like a woman suggests woman are decorative in the workplace. It ignores that women have independent ideas of how they wish to present themselves.
I have never been good at dressing like a woman. Throughout my 20s, I held different jobs, and what I wore to work ranged from jeans to T-shirts. In graduate school, I first thought that, when I became. a professor,I would have to wear suits to work, to look the par of someone, with a PhD. I quickly realized that there was no standard look to this par. Now I generally teach in jeans and dress shirts.
I wear clothes that allow me to feel comfortable and confident. That's how I. choose to dress like a woman. Dress has developed with the change of the role of women in contemporary society. Dressing like a woman means wearing anything a woman considers appropriate tor getting her job done.

Any fair-minded assessment of the dangers of the deal between Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) and Deep-Mind must start by acknowledging that both sides mean well. Deep-Mind is one of the leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies in the world. The potential of this work applied to healthcare is very great, but it could also lead to further concentration of power in the tech giants. It is against that background that the information commissioner, Elizabeth Denham, has issued her judgment against the Royal Free hospital under the NHS, which handed over to Deep-Mind the records of 1.6 million patients in 2015. This is on the basis of a vague agreement which took far too little account of the patient’s rights and their expectations of privacy.
Deep-Mind has almost apologized. The NHS has modified its ways. Further arrangements and there maybe many between the NHS and Deep-Mind will be carefully inspected to ensure that all necessary permissions have been asked of patients and all unnecessary data has been cleaned. There are lessons to learn about the informed patient agreement. But privacy is not the only angle in this case and not even the most important. Ms Denham chose to concentrate the blame on the NHS, since under existing law it “controlled” the data and Deep-Mind merely “processed” it. But this difference misses the point that it is processing and collection, not the more possession of bis, that gives the data value.
The great question is who should benefit from the analysis of all the data that our lives now generate. Privacy law builds on the concept of damage to an individual from identifiable knowledge about them. That misses the way the economy works. The data of an individual there gains its value only when it is compared with the data of countless millions more.
The use of privacy law to restrict the tech giants in this instance feels slightly improper. This practice does not address the real worry. It is not enough to say that the algorithms Deep-Mind develops will benefit patients and save lives. What matters is that they will belong to a private monopoly (垄断) which developed then using public resources. If software promises to save lives as drugs now can, big data may be expected to behave as a big medical company has done. We are still at the beginning of this revolution. A long struggle will be needed to avoid a future troublesome. Ms Denham’s report is a welcome start.

Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.
Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.
When young children learn a new language, they come to see all kinds of languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset(思维模式) helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.
So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now it is the time to step out and learn a new language!

A study done by University of Michigan has shown information that seems to be true for the general population. Babies are the most cold infected group, generally more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to the age of three. After three, girls are easier to get infected with cold than boys, and teenage girls get three colds a year to boys' two. The general cold infections continue to get less into adults. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds every year. One interesting thing is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infection , because people in this age group are most likely to have young children.
The study has also found that economy plays an important role as well. With more and more income, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family is getting lower and lower. Families with the lowest income usually live in rooms more crowded than rooms owned by richer people, and the crowding usually leads to more chances for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also have an effect on our diet. Many scientists believe that a poorer diet usually leads into more possibilities of cold infection.

Mum has sweet memories of the food from her home town in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes. Thanks to this, Dad has come to love hot pot! But there are still some dishes that Dad dare not try even after many years of marriage to my mother. Even today he still does not take to eating things like chicken feet.
But I enjoy that sort of food myself. Last week, I went to the butcher's and asked, "Do you have pigs' ears?" "No," the butcher said, pulling at his own ears, "just these ordinary ones." He must have thought I was joking.
Dad can cook a super "full English breakfast" of bacon, eggs, beans, sausages and toast with butter. Mum and I just have to find a way to get him into the kitchen! He also does a typical Sunday roast. We all love roast beef and vegetables.
I'll never forget my first visit to China. Mum encouraged me to try different kinds of food. But just when I thought I could deal with all Chinese food, I came across stinky tofu, a horrible grey thing that looked and smelt like a burnt sports shoe. I gathered all my courage to take a bite and was amazed to find it wasn't so bad. It reminded me of blue cheese, a similarly strong smelling type of food you either love or hate. Maybe I'll fall in love with stinky tofu, someday.

We were trying to get down to the beach in time to watch the sunset—one of my all time favorite things to do. After several failed attempts, we finally found one spot in the last lot so we pulled into the only space available.
As we were about to pay the price of parking there, a woman came up to us and said she had just paid for two hours(all the time we needed) but she had just been called back home and asked if we would like to have her parking pass. She refused to take any money for it and insisted that we take it. We gladly accepted it and thanked her for her kindness.
It was truly a “paying it forward” experience that we have often done, but one that hasn’t been done to us that often. I smiled at her with such gratitude. It was more than the price of the parking pass. Accepting the kindness of others is part of this process. We felt that and blessed by that kindness.
We got down to the beach in time to watch the sun setting because of this woman’s kindness and we were so grateful. It was a wonderful experience and the sunset was such a wonderful sight!

The scientists are working with several universities and research centers as part of a group called subCULTron. The European Union gives money to the project as part of its Horizon 2020 program whose aim is to take great ideas from the lab to the market and support science and innovation (创新) in Europe. The scientists want to use the artificial intelligence of the robots to help humans understand what is happening under the water of the Venice lagoon (潟湖).
SubCULTron, a collective artificial intelligence project, plans to create the biggest shoal (鱼群) of robot fish in the world. The project’s aim is to improve knowledge of the seabed and try to turn human abilities into hi-tech items.
Alexandre Campo, a computer scientist, says the scientists have looked at the way animals learn to work in groups to understand how robots can learn to work together. The subCULTron project wants its robots to learn to work together so they can watch out for changes and new problems in the water.
One problem the researchers had in the beginning was how the robots would communicate with each other. Wi-Fi and GPS equipment don’t work underwater. Instead, the robots can use sonar (声呐) and an electric field.
Another problem was charging batteries. The robots come up to the water’s surface and stay near a boat or a power station to charge without any electrical cables. Besides, how to be water- proof, especially for some key pads of the robots, was really tough. Fortunately, a special mixture has been created to be pinned on the robot, which successfully stands the test of water.
The health state of the lagoon is pretty good. There are no industrial polluters, and the city now has a modem sewer (污水管) system. It’s not like before when all the waste flushed directly into the water. The robots in Venice will continue their work until 2019. The subCULTron project hopes they develop into “an artificial society underneath the water surface” that serves “a human society above the water”.
