It’s a common belief that fish can’t remember anything for longer than seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that every moment in their lives would be like seeing the world for the first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have much better memories than we used to think.

In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They took the fish out and then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. They found that after a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food.

In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. But there was no clear evidence until the latest findings. Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild. “If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains (容纳) safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives in danger.” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.

So next time you are watching your pet fish from outside the tank, perhaps you should feel closer to them—they may remember who you are.

11. We often feel sorry for fish because they have bad memories.
12. The researchers carry out the research to find out if fish can find food easily.
13. The underlined word “tank” in Paragraph 4 means a container for keeping fish.

For some students, getting better grades can seem like an impossible task sometimes. With the challenges(挑战) of school, just paying attention in class or studying hard isn’t always enough. But what if there were other ways for students to improve their grades? For parents and students who have ever wondered if this is possible, now you can rest easy. Research suggests that a person who likes doing activities can improve their grades.

Scientists think that those students who are active are not just exercising their bodies, but also exercising their brains(大脑). In turn, they can be able to improve their grades at school.

In the most recent study, researchers found that when children played for half an hour each day, they were better at organizing(组织) their schoolwork as well as doing project work and learning traditionally “difficult” subjects, such as maths.

What does this mean for children who aren’t active? Researchers think that if kids don’t get enough activities, they are going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to school performance.

In the research experiment, a group of children skipped with ropes(跳绳), played basketball and did a number of other games or exercises. Another group of children didn’t do any activities. They took part in testing both before experiment and after the experiment. Testing was mainly for maths and reading skills. Results showed that the children in the activity group did better on the tests than those who had no activity.

All work and no play will not only make Jack a dull(迟钝的) boy, but will also negatively(消极地) affect his grades in school, according to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Parents complain(抱怨) children today are actually less active and they always worry about their grades. Dr. Belton, an expert, said, “If you’d like to see your kids do better in school, have them close their books, set down their pencils and go outside to play.”

21. What does the underlined words “rest easy” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Stop worrying.B.Keep working.
C.Continue learning.D.Study hard.
22. What kind of children is better at organizing their schoolwork in the most recent study?
A.They study all the time.
B.They play for half an hour every day.
C.They finish their homework on time.
D.They do some reading after class every day.
23. In Paragraph 5, what does the research experiment want to show us?
A.Doing activities is bad for the students.
B.Doing more homework can get better marks.
C.The children in the activity group did better on the tests.
D.Children who didn’t do any activities did better on the tests.
24. To help children get better grades, parents should _____.
A.ask the researchers for help
B.help them to organize their schoolwork
C.encourage them to do more activities
D.let them solve problems by themselves
25. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Studying hard.B.Taking part in testing.
C.Doing activities is interesting.D.Being active is helpful for better grades.

With online booksellers and e-readers becoming popular, traditional bookstores seem to be dying out. But is it true? Many traditional bookstores are now trying everything to make themselves more attractive (有吸引力的) to readers. And some of (A) them have done a great job. Online bookstores usually have larger book stocks (库存) than traditional bookstores. The bookstore has walls of books about arts and design. You may meet popular artists there or perhaps even a happy couple that chooses to get married in the bookstore.

Some bookstores even go one step further. They themselves have become tourist places by showing the characteristics of their cities. Hong Kong has many second-floor bookstores. These bookstores are small, but their books are carefully chosen, just like the city of Hong Kong.

In order to attract customers to read books at the store, some traditional bookstores are also coming up with coffee centers in bookstores, providing free WiFi for readers, holding reading clubs for students and opening a self-service book store in the downtown area.

We all enjoy food! And we all know that a mobile App (short for “application”) is a software program which is designed to run on mobile phones. So how many Apps are there, related to food?

Out of the Apps available just from the Store alone, there are thousands which relate to food. Just think about it. All animals think about food a lot of the time-for obvious reasons! Food is essential for humans to survive. But humans also want their food to taste good, and usually also to look good.

There are Apps for recipes, Apps to find restaurants, Apps to rate restaurants or dishes, and Apps to tell you what’s in your food. There are Apps to book dinner in a restaurant and to order meals, Apps to play at being a restaurant critic, Apps to photograph your food and Apps to tell you which wine is best with your meal. Dieting is a multi-million-dollar industry, all over the globe -so naturally there are many Apps to help dieters count calories, or avoid fats or sugar.

Scanning bar codes on food can provide much information about the food if you have an App to make the information available to you. Bon’ App is a free service that can be used on mobile devices and computers. The Bon App application is type and voice powered, instantly telling users what is in their food, with simple information about the calories, sugar, salt and “bad fat”.

Maybe you would like to know when your favorite food will be discounted by the shop. Perhaps you want to be able to identify the ingredients of a dish, simply by waving your mobile phone over the food?

What fantasy Apps can you think of that would improve your experiences with food?
