Dragon dances, acrobats (杂技), fireworks, apad (庆祝游行)... London is full of excitement for New Year. Find out more about how people in London celebrate.
The event
For London’s Chinese community (and everyone else who loves a good party), Chinese New Year is a huge event. Before Chinese New Year, people make sure their houses are clean and tidy, buy new clothes and get a haircut to bring good luck for the new year.
The celebrations
In central London, there are fireworks and performances with all kinds of acts and special guests. Celebrations include fashion shows and Chinese hip-hop acts, as well as traditional performances with Chinese acrobats. Chinatown is busy. The streets are decorated with lucky red lanterns and full of craft (工艺品) and food stalls (货推). If you’re thinking of eating in one of Chinatown’s excellent Chinese restaurants, however, book a table early, because you won’t find one on the night.
Chinese people in Britain
For young Chinese people studying or working in the UK, video call is a good way to join big family celebrations back home. Those missing home might also cook dumplings for friends in Britain or organize an evening of karaoke. The festivities are not as noisy as back home. But there is still plenty of excitement, happiness and good feelings as people come together to enjoy the celebrations.

Everyone knows by now that plastic pollution is a huge problem for the environment. Beijing, for example, has dealt with this by banning (禁止) thin plastic bags, plastic tableware (餐具) and other plastic items in supermarket, restaurants and hotels since May 1, 2020.
But an even better solution might be on the way. Researchers at a French company called Carbios have discovered a bacterial enzyme that can break down plastic. The enzyme, which was first found in compost (堆肥) leaves, turns plastic into chemical “building blocks” that can then be used to create new products, according to the Guardian.
The new enzyme was uncovered in research that was published in the journal Nature. Researchers studied over 100,000 microorganisms (微生物) to find one that could break down plastic quickly. The leaf compost enzyme was first discovered in 2012. Scientists changed its genes (基因), allowing it to break down 90 percent of one ton of plastic in less than 10 hours.
“It had been completely forgotten, but it turned out to be the best,” said Professor Alain Marty, chief science officer at Carbios.
The enzyme especially breaks down PET, a type of plastic that is most commonly used to produce plastic bottles and food packaging. It is the fifth most common type of plastic that we use.
Carbios said it is working together with companies like Pepsi and Nestle—major consumers of plastic themselves—to develop their research and start using the enzyme on an industrial scale (范围), according to Forbes.

Du Fu (712-770), one of the greatest poets in China, is familiar to most of us.
However, Du has remained largely unknown in the Western world.
The one-hour documentary (纪录片) Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, introduces the great poet to Western audiences. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest literature (文学) masters of the West.
In the film, British historian Michael Wood explores the poet’s life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi in Henan province and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂) in Chengdu, Sichuan, where Du used to live. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who help to tell the fascinating story of the poet. The film also includes interviews with scholars (学者) and recitals (朗诵) of Du’s works by British actor Sir Ian McKellen, who is known for performing Shakespeare’s works.
The documentary explains why Du’s works have been popular for centuries. “Chinese people really value the recording of history and Du Fu is better than anyone at reflecting (反映) history in his poetry. That’s because historical events are mirrored in his own life and spiritual (精神的) journey,” said Zeng Xiangbo, a professor at Renmin University.
Du lived under the rule of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong (713-756), a time of prosperity (繁荣). He was a civil servant (文职人员) in the Tang court (朝廷). But as the An Lushan Rebellion of 755 floored the empire, he escaped, took his family on the road as refugees (难民), and suffered starvation (饥饿) and poverty. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his country and people, as well as celebrating the simple joys of life. Known as China’s “saint of poetry”, he wrote about 1,400 poems that are still with us today.
33. Which of the following is one of the greatest masters of the West?A.Dante. | B.Du Fu. | C.Michael Wood. | D.Sir Ian Mckellen. |

(an extract from Pride and Prejudice)
“I hope, my dear.” said Mr Bennet to his wife at breakfast the next morning, “that you have told the cook to send up a good dinner today, as I am expecting a visitor.”
“Who is it, my dear? I know of nobody who is coming, unless Charlotte Lucas happens to call in,and I hope my dinner are good enoughfor her.”
“The person I’m talking about is a gentleman and a stranger.”
Mrs Bennet’s eyes shone with excitement. “It’s Mr Bingley, I’m sure! Why, Jane, you never mentioned it! Well, I’ll be extremely glad to see him. Lydia, my love, ring the bell. I must speak to the cook at once.”
“It is not Mr Bingley,” said her husband. “It’s a person whom I have never seen before.”
This caused general astonishment (惊讶), and he had the pleasure of being eagerly questioned by his wife and five daughters all at the same time. Having amused by himself for some time with their curiosity, he finally explained. “I have recently received a letter from my nephew (侄子), Mr Collins, who, as you know, will inherit (继承) all my property when I die, and may throw you out of his house as soon as he wants.”...
“But I tell you what, my dears,” she said brightly, “I’m giving a little supper party for some of the officers tomorrow. I’ll ask Mr Philips to visit Mr Wickham and invite him to come too. Will you all come as well?”
The girls were delighted (高兴的) and agreed at once to this arrangement, and the whole group walked back to Longbourn, happily discussing the enjoyable evening they were going to have. Mr Collins had been very impressed with Mrs Philips’ politeness, and when they reached Longbourn, he complimented (称赞) Mrs Bennet on her sister’s elegance and charming manners.
The next evening the carriage took him and his five cousins to Meryton, and the girls had the pleasure of hearing, as they entered the hall, that Mr Wickham had accepted their uncle’s invitation, and was at that moment in the house.
When Mr Collins was shown into the sitting-room, and had time to look around and admire it, he said immediately to Mrs Philips, ‘Madam, I must compliment you on the size and furniture of this room. Really, I could almost imagine myself in the smaller summer breakfast room at Rosings!’
This remark (评论) did not at first please his hostess very much, but when she heard from him what Rosings was, and who its owner was, and how much Lady Latherine’s furniture cost, she realized what a great compliment it was. During the evening Mr Collins found Mrs Philips a kind and attentive listener, which was fortunate, as the Bennet girls could not bring themselves to listen to him any longer.
37. Who is the visitor Mr Bennet is expecting?A.Mr Bingley. | B.Mr Collins. | C.Mr Philips. | D.Mr Wickham. |
A.Because she had never seen the visitor before. |
B.Because she thought Mr Bingley was the visitor. |
C.Because she knew the visitor was a gentleman and a stranger. |
D.Because she disliked the breakfast that she had in the morning. |
A.friend | B.sister | C.hostess | D.neighbour |
A.Because she didn’t invite Mr Collins to enter the hall. |
B.Because she didn’t want to listen to Mr Collins any longer. |
C.Because she had no idea what Rosings was, and who its owners was. |
D.Because she found that Mr Collins wasn’t a kind and attentive listener. |

Becoming an adult means different things in different cultures. However, no matter where you are from, it means you will need to take on new responsibilities. That’s why in many cultures, there is a “coming of age” ceremony (成 人 礼) to introduce young people to their new identities. Let’s look at some of them.
France
This nation’s traditional coming-of-age ceremony is known as “le Bal”, or, to give it its full title, “le Bal des Debutantes”—Debutante Ball (初次社交舞会).
Le Bal is a fashion event, held in November each year, for an invited group of girls aged between 16 and 22. Last year was the 26th le Bal event. The girls aren’t only French, but come from many other countries too. They wear fashionable clothes from the best designers in the world.
The event was inspired (受启发的) by the debutante balls that began in England in the 1600s and ended in the 1950s. As these balls, young women from the highest parts of society attended, showing that they were ready to be married to wealthy men. Nowadays, it’s a charity event, used to raise money for good causes.
Latin America
Some coming-of-age traditions are not unique to countries but instead celebrated by regions and cultures. One such tradition is quinceanera (成人礼), the celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday. It’s observed throughout Latin America, as well as Hispanic (西班牙) communities across the US.
Once, quinceanera symbolized (代表) a very traditional idea of what a woman should be. Before their special day, girls were taught cooking, sewing(缝纫) and other household skills. Marriage was expected to follow shortly after.
One important tradition that’s still alive, however, is known as “15 candles”. Toward the end of her party, the girl gives a candle to each of the 15 females (女性) who she thinks are the most important in her life. The candles symbolize the past, and everything she will leave behind as she becomes a woman.
Japan
Coming of Age Day is a yearly national holiday which is held in January in Japan. On that day, those who have celebrated their 20th birthday in the past year all officially come of age.
Coming of Age Day is a colorful occasion. The girls dress in traditional kimonos (和服). They do their hair in fancy styles and wear make-up.
But what does coming of age actually mean in Japan? As some other places, it marks the time when a person is given new rights and responsibilities as an adult.
