Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a film actor? I was lucky enough to have such an experience.
One of my family’s close friends is a director and wanted to make a project for the Virginia Film Festival. Having lots of experience in the theater, I was sure that my acting skills were good enough for the lead role. But it turned out it was very different from theater acting.
Most people, myself included, think that actors are the centre of attention. However, most of the time everyone is busy setting up cameras. Nobody is paying unnecessary attention to the actors. Each part of the film will be shot(拍摄)many times before it is made into what you see on the big screen. For example, the short film I was in was only five minutes long but I spent half a day in acting. This is because it has to be shot at different angles(角度)and light conditions. The acting is different too. I’ve never actually seen how I look on the camera before. So I was quite surprised when I saw how strange my face was. You’ll find the same skills that work for acting on the stage(舞台)are not so useful in that of the film.
I never thought I would be able to work with a film team. So, the experience was meaningful. However, I’ve decided I would probably do better on a stage than talking to a camera.
39. What experience did the writer have before he played a role in the film?A.Directing films. | B.Taking photos. | C.Talking to cameras. | D.Acting in theaters. |
A.Because the director asks others to do so. | B.Because the film will be shot very fast. |
C.Because there are so many actors in a film. | D.Because people are busy setting up cameras. |
A.The jobs different people do in making a film. |
B.The long hours actors have to spend in film shooting. |
C.The differences between acting in a theatre and in a film. |
D.The methods directors usually use to make good films. |
A.Learn to set up a camera. | B.Make a new film project. |
C.Work hard as a theatre actor. | D.Take film-acting lessons. |
Chinese students are showing their interest and creative thinking in developing all kinds of apps(软件)to solve social problems and help enrich lives.
Li Xiang, a student at Zhejiang University, developed a mobile app with two schoolmates that can help users develop good habits by building and feeding electronic pets. The special electronic pet is generated(生成)in the app Weier, which sounds similar to the English word “well”. A user’s daily activities are used to help it grow.
“When users complete their daily exercise, their electronic pets will also be full of energy(能力), and when they go to bed too late at night, their pets will have black circles under their eyes,” Li said. The electronic pet is like a projection of the user in the real world. But unlike the electronic pets that cared more about the similarity with the user’s appearance before, this app pays more attention to the user’s real self.
This app is one of more than 1400 projects developed by students from over 500 universities that are going to enter the 2022 Mobile App Creation Competition. Just as one of the workers for the competition said, every student should have the chance to create something that can change the world and make it a better place.

Do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger? What are they like? Are they brave and strong? If so, then they are really a “tiger”.
In Chinese culture, tigers are considered the king of all the animals. They stand for power(力量)and protection. So that’s why you can see pictures of tigers on the walls of houses in China. They are to protect us from danger.
Tigers have an important cultural meaning not just in China, but across Asia. As they mostly live in Asia, for many people in the West they have become a symbol(标志)of Eastern countries. For example, Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and China’s Taiwan were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pi, the Canadian writer Yann Martel chose a tiger to go on the adventure(冒险)with the Indian boy Pi in the Pacific Ocean.
In the West, lions are considered the king of all the animals. But tigers are also seen as a very powerful animal. In English, if you want someone not to be so angry, you can say to them, “Easy Tiger”. And “Eye of the Tiger” means great power.
It’s sad that tigers are in danger now. Just like tigers serve as a symbol of protection in Chinese culture, we can only hope that in the Year of the Tiger more people can learn about tigers and help protect them and their homes.
47. What do tigers stand for in both Chinese and English cultures?A.Power. | B.Health. | C.Adventure. | D.Danger. |
A.By raising questions. | B.By listing numbers. | C.By giving examples. | D.By comparing differences. |
A.To share a story. | B.To call for protection. | C.To ask for suggestions. | D.To introduce an animal. |
In 2019, Bing Dwen Dwen was chosen as the mascot(吉祥物)for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
The design(设计)was chosen from 5,816 works. Cao Xue, the designer of Bing DwenDwen, said the idea first came from the traditional Chinese food bingtanghulu—the sugar coat later turned into an ice shell(壳). However, a simple food couldn’t stand for a country by itself. Cao’s team tried many animals and plants and finally decided on a panda. “We don’t need to explain anything to have it understood across different cultures.” said Cao.
However, there were already too many panda designs in cartoons and movies. The mascot needed to be creative. Cao first decided that it should be a baby panda instead of a grown-up one. That’s why the body of Bing DwenDwen is as long as its head.
They wanted to make sure their panda looked different. So they visited a research centre to learn about baby pandas.
“If we say artists are like actors who play themselves, designers are actors who have to fit into different roles.” Cao said. “The design was not easy. I’m glad we came up with a good one.”
50. Why did Cao’s team finally choose a panda as the mascot?A.Because they followed the advice from other countries. |
B.Because they wanted to create a very different symbol. |
C.Because everyone could understand it without explaining. |
D.Because there were few panda designs around the world. |
A.They visited a research centre. | B.They watched movies and cartoons. |
C.They tasted many traditional foods. | D.They learned from actors and actresses. |
A.Why Bing Dwen Dwen Is So Popular | B.The History of Olympic Mascots |
C.Different Panda Designs in Cartoons | D.How Bing Dwen Dwen Was Born |

“It’s a waste of time.” I said when my mom told me that I had to do volunteer(志愿服务)work at weekends. And last weekend, we went to a homeless shelter(收容所). It was the experience that changed me a lot.
We got there a little bit late. When we walked to the kitchen, we saw the homeless people. They started to walk in and among them, a little girl, around 5 years old, walked up and pointed to the food I was handing out. I passed her a cold sandwich and she nodded to say thanks. She then walked over to her parents, who were seated at a large table.
As she walked away, I thought about how much I had. I go to one of the top schools in my city, I have a great house by the water, and I have a warm meal every night. Then I thought of how little she had. She may not go to school, and this is where she sleeps and eats every day.
Seeing that little girl, I realized how lucky a girl I was. From then on, I fell in love with volunteering and lots of my friends joined me in making a difference to the world.
