One day, a famous writer was walking through a park. Suddenly, he heard a young girl _________, because she lost her favorite toy.

Tigers have an important cultural meaning not just in China, but across Asia. As they mostly live in Asia, for many people in the West they have become a symbol（标志）of Eastern countries. For example, Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and China’s Taiwan were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pi, the Canadian writer Yann Martel chose a tiger to go on the adventure（冒险）with the Indian boy Pi in the Pacific Ocean.

In the West, lions are considered the king of all the animals. But tigers are also seen as a very powerful animal. In English, if you want someone not to be so angry, you can say to them, “Easy Tiger”. And “Eye of the Tiger” means great power.

It’s sad that tigers are in danger now. Just like tigers serve as a symbol of protection in Chinese culture, we can only hope that in the Year of the Tiger more people can learn about tigers and help protect them and their homes.

In 2019, Bing Dwen Dwen was chosen as the mascot（吉祥物）for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The design（设计）was chosen from 5,816 works. Cao Xue, the designer of Bing DwenDwen, said the idea first came from the traditional Chinese food bingtanghulu—the sugar coat later turned into an ice shell（壳）. However, a simple food couldn’t stand for a country by itself. Cao’s team tried many animals and plants and finally decided on a panda. “We don’t need to explain anything to have it understood across different cultures.” said Cao.

However, there were already too many panda designs in cartoons and movies. The mascot needed to be creative. Cao first decided that it should be a baby panda instead of a grown-up one. That’s why the body of Bing DwenDwen is as long as its head.

They wanted to make sure their panda looked different. So they visited a research centre to learn about baby pandas.

“If we say artists are like actors who play themselves, designers are actors who have to fit into different roles.” Cao said. “The design was not easy. I’m glad we came up with a good one.”

“It’s a waste of time.” I said when my mom told me that I had to do volunteer（志愿服务）work at weekends. And last weekend, we went to a homeless shelter（收容所）. It was the experience that changed me a lot.

We got there a little bit late. When we walked to the kitchen, we saw the homeless people. They started to walk in and among them, a little girl, around 5 years old, walked up and pointed to the food I was handing out. I passed her a cold sandwich and she nodded to say thanks. She then walked over to her parents, who were seated at a large table.

As she walked away, I thought about how much I had. I go to one of the top schools in my city, I have a great house by the water, and I have a warm meal every night. Then I thought of how little she had. She may not go to school, and this is where she sleeps and eats every day.

Seeing that little girl, I realized how lucky a girl I was. From then on, I fell in love with volunteering and lots of my friends joined me in making a difference to the world.
