When we talk about role models, we always think about some pop stars or famous people, but in fact, our role models are just around us.

One day, Mrs. Smith was sitting in the doctor’s waiting room when a young boy and his mother came in. The young boy caught Mrs. Smith’s attention because he wore a patch (眼罩) over one eye. She felt surprised at how natural he seemed to be even though he lost one of his eyes.

As they were waiting, Mrs. Smith took a chance to ask the little boy what happened to his eye. He thought about her question for a while, and then replied, lifting the patch, “There’s nothing wrong with my eye. I’m a pirate (海盗)!” Then he returned to his game.

Mrs. Smith was at the doctor’s because she lost her leg in a car accident. It’s a terrible experience to her. She could not get out of the fear and sadness. Her trip today was to check the leg over.

The word “pirate” changed her life. She seemed to see that she dressed as Long John Silver, a famous pirate, standing on a ship. The ship rocked under the storm’s force. Still she stood there. She smiled into a storm.

At that moment, her courage returned. A few minutes later, the nurse called her. As she balanced on her crutches (拐杖), the boy noticed her leg. “Hey lady,” he called, “What’s wrong with your leg?” The young boy’s mother felt very sorry for her son’s question. But Mrs. Smith replied with a smile, “Nothing. I’m a pirate, too.”

What You Do:

Experiment 1:

Have your friend close her eyes and open her mouth.

Give her a piece of the food and ask her to taste it.

Then, ask her what she thinks it is. She will probably guess correctly.

Experiment 2:

Ask your friend to close the eyes, give her a piece of the raw potato. At the same time, hold a piece of apple right under her nose. Ask her to eat the potato (but don’t say it out by name) and tell what she thinks it is. She will say it is a piece of apple!

Experiment 3: (for the brave)

Take a piece of raw onion. You don’t have to close your eyes. Squeeze(捏) your nose so that no smells can get into it. Now eat the onion. Surprise! As long as you hold your nose, you will not be able to taste the onion.

Your tongue, however, can taste only certain flavors(味道). All of the other “tastes” are actually “smells,” and you need your nose to “taste” them.

You may be told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often connected with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided. But that’s not true. Fear can be good for us.

Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we will not realize we should run away from a tiger or step back from a high place. Researchers said that a healthy fear of crime (犯罪) keeps teenagers away from dangerous people, places and activities.

Fear makes us jump, shake and cry. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride (过山车). Kerr, a researcher, from US, explained why to us. Fear fills our brain with healthy chemicals, and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us. Besides, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps us bond with each other. “Watch people walking out of a haunted house (鬼屋), and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” Kerr said. That also explains why schools organize some challenging (有挑战性的) trips and physical activities to build up students’ team spirit.

People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you get scared easily, don’t worry. Because being scared can help a person manage difficult situations. Kerr said that the fear from things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play can help us be more confident. Also, if you become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, you’ll be better able to work through it during the difficult situations.

So, learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is.

Do you like remembering things? Is that difficult or easy for you? I’d like to tell you some ways to improve your memory(记忆力).

My first advice is that if you want to remember something well, you have to review it often. You might review material(材料) two days after learning it, then a week later, then two weeks later, and then a month later. After a month, you will find that you can remember the material easily.

My second advice is to use a colored pen to mark the important parts on your book. This will help you in two ways. First, it will help you pay attention to the most important parts when you learn the language. It is always easier to remember only the key points. Second, this will make reviewing easier. When you open your book, the colored parts will show you the most important things quickly. In this way, you don’t have to review all the material again.

Another piece of advice is to use the proper time well. First, review all the information in your mind before you go to sleep. Because your brain is working while you are sleeping. If you think about the information before you go to sleep, you might be able to remember it better. Another good time for memorizing information is in the morning because you have just rested and your brain is fresh and clear. So you might also try to review the important information in the morning.
