Modern organic(有机的)farming was developed as a response to the environmental harm caused by the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers(化肥)in conventional agriculture, and it has plenty of ecological benefits(生态效益). In other words, the idea behind organic farming is to use no chemicals. Farmers must use natural methods to make plants grow strong and protect them from insects. It is believed that without chemicals, these plants will make better food for humans. But the idea is bigger than that. Organic farming respects all plants and animals in the environment. This kind of farming should improve nature’s health.
Fertilizers are chemicals that give plants strength. If a farmer grows the same plant over and over in the same place, the soil will lose its ability to feed the plant. The farmer must add fertilize to help the soil. Organic farmers do not add fertilizer. They will rotate crops(轮作谷物)or use animal manure and plant compost(堆肥)to make the soil rich again. Compost is made from plant material that has broken down into soil. It has all the food a plant needs to grow.
Pesticides are also avoided. These are chemicals that kill pests like bad insects or animals. Organic farmers have other ways to deal with pests because pesticides kill good animals and insects that protect the plants. Foxes and snakes eat the mice. Some insects like ladybirds eat the bad insects. And of course, there are weeds(杂草). These are the plants that farmers do not want because they steal growing space from the good plants. To stop weeds, organic farmers can scrape(刮除)the soil several times. Eventually, the weeds will die.
Organic farming usually needs a lot of human labour to do the job of chemicals. This is one reason that organic food costs more. But when we think about the health of the earth, its plants, and its animals, perhaps it is worth it. In the end, a healthy planet means that we will be healthy as well.
31. From the passage we know that organic food may be ________ than inorganic food.A.tastier | B.cheaper | C.more expensive | D.more beautiful |
A.a chemical used to kill insects |
B.something to make soil rich again |
C.the waste matter from animals |
D.some materials to make plants grow |
A.Organic farming can make us and our earth healthy. |
B.Plants with chemicals make better food for humans. |
C.Soil needs all kinds of fertilizers to keep plants growing. |
D.It’s wise to grow the same plant again in the same place. |
Think about what is happening in many families: kids come home, throw away their schoolbags, jump onto the sofa, get lost in the world of the small screen and become couch potatoes. Kids are crazy about screens and games, suffer from shortsightedness and become lazy thinkers. Now, parents need to take responsibility for family education to help shape the future for their children.
On Jan l, the Law on Family Education Promotion(《家庭教育促进法》)), the first of its kind in China, came into effect. It was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on Oct 23, 2021. The law says that parents or other guardians of minors(未成年人的监护人)should be responsible for family education. They are encouraged to educate their children properly-- morally(道德上), physically and psychologically(心理上).
According to the law, parents and guardians mustn’t place too much pressure(压力)on their children. Parents and guardians should carefully organize time for minors to study, rest, play and exercise, and make sure minors don’t become addicted to the Internet,
The law also says that parents or other guardians should not use violence(暴力) to control their children. They should not discriminate(歧视)against youth according to their gender or physical condition. For example, some parents might value boys more than girls or discriminate against disabled children.
The law also gives special mention to stay-at-home children in the countryside. They may be left alone while their parents go to work in cities. It asks local governments to keep a close eye on such families, and help the parents get jobs locally so that they can be responsible for their children’s education.
"Family education is very important for the future of the country, " says Sun Hongyan, head of youth and children research at the China Youth and Children Research Center. "Now, with the introduction of the new law, family education is no longer just a family matter but a state affair (事务). "
When parents fail to educate their children properly, they might be breaking the law. Although punishment and detention(拘留)for parents were dropped from the final version of the law, they will be given a warning.

In China the Youth Community Volunteer Award is an only project that has planted the seeds (种子) of public service in the minds of many young people over the past six years. Their thoughts and actions not only represent the positive changes which China has brought to the global community, but will also encourage the younger men to contribute to China’s continuable development in the future.
Some high school and college students in our country often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals or homes for the aged. They read books to the people who have to be in these places. Sometimes they visit places of interest with the people or play games with them or listen to their problems.
Others of them even volunteer to work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They collect food or money, paint, clean or repair their houses or do shopping for them. For each particular need, there is a group of volunteers.
For boys and girls who no longer have parents, there is an organization called the orphanage. The students give them some gifts and play with them. Some help with homework, tell stories or teach them pictures or foreign languages, telling them the importance of learning. Some have talent shows for children: singing and dancing. Some take these boys to basketball games or on fishing trips. Others help the manager to clean, tidy up toys and rooms.
In most cities there are a number of clubs where boys and girls are taught to play games or to make crafts (手工艺品). Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, beaches, museums and other places of interest. Most of these clubs have students as volunteers.
In the face of the pressure of epidemic prevention and control, many youth volunteers take an active part in the epidemic control work, reducing the pressure on the front line. They join in the volunteer relay, helping check epidemic prevention and health information code and communication travel card, take the temperature, input data, survey the situation door to door and so on. They said, “We young people should actively shoulder more social responsibilities!”
In 2021, Chinese youth volunteers outstanding individual awards were held in China, some of the volunteers won the 12th China Youth Volunteer Outstanding individual. Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.

In order to find the box of money that Injun Joe buried, they tried their best. One morning, Tom took Huckleberry to a quiet place and told him that he knew it was never in room number two and it was in the caves.
“I will help you get it out. But I don’t want to get lost there! We won’t get lost because I know an easy way to get in there. I’m the only one who knows it, Huck.”
They got some bread and meat, some string, some bags, and some candles. They borrowed a boat from somebody who wasn’t around. Then they went down the river to the hole where Tom had got out of the caves. The hole was covered in bushes, but Tom remembered exactly where it was.
“It’s a great hiding place,” said Hucklebery.
They went into the caves. Tom was soon back at the spring where he had stayed. Then he and Huckleberry went to where he had seen Injun Joe. He held up his candle, and they saw a big cross on the wall.
“Number two, under the cross!” said Tom. “That’s what he said.”
Huckleberry was afraid. “Tom, let’s get out. What if Injun Joe’s ghost comes?”
“No, ghosts don’t want money! Anyway, Injun Joe died five miles from here. It’s too far.” Huckleberry agreed. They got to the cross and began to look under it. It didn’t take long for them to find the wooden box with the money. It was very heavy. They couldn’t hoist it. They took the money out of the box and put it into the bags. The bags were easier to carry. They got out of the caves and went back into the boat.
“Haha, we are rich now.” Huckleberry laughed. “I can buy delicious food, new clothes and even anything I want. I won’t go to school any more.”
Soon they were back in St. Petersburg. When the Welshman saw them come back safely, he hugged them and made them go to Widow Douglas’s house. There were many people there. Widow Douglas gave both boys new clothes to change into. Huckleberry didn’t like being with so many people and wanted to leave, but Tom made him stay. The Welshman made a speech and told everybody how Huckleberry had helped to catch Injun Joe. With tears filled in eyes, Widow Douglas said she was going to give them some money if they really hated school so that they could start a business when they were older. Although they all knew that she lived a hard life herself.
After hearing this, Tom felt their deep love and made a decision. Then he told them that the didn’t need any money because they already had a lot. He showed everyone the bags with the money. They were amazed to look at the bags full of money.
“Huck,” Tom said,“All the neighbours gave us a lot of care and help although they met a lot of difficulty. That’s the real treasure in our life. I think we should give the money to people in need. And we have to go to school to work hard for our future. I’m with you.”
“That’s better.” Huckleberry agreed.
Tom made him promise and wrote his name in blood.

In honor of international Women’ Day Chinese astronaut Wang Yaping sent a message to the women of the world from the Chinese space station.
Space has never changed its environment or lowered its level because of the arrival of women. There is already a lot of flight data telling us, there were no great differences in the ability between men and women. We can all complete the same training and assessment. And many physical and psychological characteristics of women can play an advantage in space. This is helpful for successfully completing the challenges. With the development of aerospace technology and commercial (商业的) aerospace, it has become increasingly common for women to take part in spaceflight. I hope all girls guard your space dreams of going to the sea of stars. One day, before you know it, when you look up, you will see that your dream is already within reach. It is possible that more and more women will take part in manned spaceflight missions (载人航天飞行任务). It will have a very important influence on the large-scale (大规模) and long-term human exploration of space in the future. It will make our careers in space exploration develop quickly and continuously. This also helps to encourage women to go after their dreams bravely and achieve a wonderful life. Ladies, although our nationalities, ethnicities (种族) and careers are different, but women all over the world are making the world more lively, more harmonious and warmer through their own efforts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every female for their selfless contribution. I also wish every female would pick the brightest stars for the lives and careers they love in their own starry sky. |
