When we talk about pigs, we have “Boiling a dead pig”, “eating like a pig” and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig”. But the truth is that pigs are not always what we consider.
Some scientists found that pigs are smarter than dogs and even some primates like monkeys. Pigs can play joy stick-controlled video games, have abstract thoughts, use tools, recognize their own names, dreams and follow commands.
Pigs also have excellent memories. Studies have shown that pigs can remember where food is stored and places where they have found before. They can also remember directions and can find their way home from great distances. Pigs can even recognize and remember humans and up to 30 other pigs.
Many people have a misunderstanding that pigs are dirty animals. In fact, pigs are very clean animals. They can live indoors like dogs and cats as companion animals. Pigs like to bathe in water, and they do take mud baths. Why? Pigs have no sweat (汗) glands so they roll around in mud to remain cool and protect themselves from the sun. So the next time you hear someone say he is “sweating like a pig”, let him know that’s impossible, because pigs don’t sweat.
Another misunderstanding people have about pigs is that they eat anything and everything and a lot of food quickly. The truth is quite the opposite. Given the freedom, pigs can be picky. They like to have their menu changed up, rather than get the same meal day after day. Pigs eat slowly, nibbling and enjoying their food. Pigs don’t “pig out” or “eat like pigs”, which are more inaccurate phrases people use.

All of our childhood memories are not accidental. When you are a child, every sound, every move, every toy, the first day of school, the first kiss, the first step…. Everything together makes what is the personality of a man. All these are pieces of one whole entity.
I was about 6 years old. My mom’s best friend left to another town and asked my mom to stay at her place with me for two days in order to look after her two sons. One was a little older than I was, and the second boy seemed to be super grown-up, for he was already fourteen. I always enjoyed staying at their place.
I remember the second day we were supposed to have the come-back party for my mom’s friend at her place. I woke up. Mom went to work and reminded me to be nice and clean by the time she came back. I stayed with Tony, the older of the boys and suddenly somebody called him and though he was not permitted to leave me alone—he left. He said it would not be long. But it took him forever. I realized that I was alone. I could not come out of the house, so I opened the window. I was so desperate(绝望的)......So lonely. So betrayed. At that moment I pulled the curtain(窗帘), so strongly that I fell on the floor. And there I was standing—one little criminal—desperate to get away and knowing that I would be punished for destroying the curtain that was not even ours.
But then something changed. I stopped weeping. I looked around and realized that I was in a safe place, and that mom would come back and kiss me no matter what I had done.
This was a moment of pure happiness, not the happiness of getting a new toy or a dog, or going to the party of your best friend. It was the moment of clarity(清晰), for me—the first time in my life when I realized that I was happy to have my mom and that I was safe. My eyes saw the world in different shades that moment. And by the way—I was not punished for the curtain. I fell asleep on my mom’s knees.

If we want to find out what kind of technology people used in the past, we normally have to depend on archaeologists to find ruined(毁坏) buildings and parts of tools or instruments or machines. Archaeologists then try to reconstruct(修复), sometimes with the help of computer technology, what these ancient buildings and objects must have looked like, and how they might have been made. Sometimes historians are lucky and find an ancient document with a written description of these ancient buildings and objects.
We can understand, then, why Chinese historians were so excited when they found cave paintings which show ancient science. They found these paintings in the world-famous Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang City, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province. There are 500 man-made caves with a history of at least 1,600 years. Almost all of these caves have paintings on their ceilings or walls and they date from the 4th to 14th centuries. Wang Jinyu is an expert on these cave paintings also called frescoes(壁画) and he says, “We discovered frescoes with scientific and technological content in almost all of the caves which have frescoes.” According to the Xinhua News Agency, these cave paintings provide evidence(证据) of “scientific and technological inventions by ancient Chinese in maths, physics, chemistry, geography, traffic and transportation,…etc.”
Among the discoveries that experts have made are cave paintings showing ancient techniques(技术) of pottery(陶器) making and wine production as well as paintings showing ancient weaving(编织) machines and then toothbrushes! The paintings also give some evidence of the lifestyle at the time with, for example, pictures of people boiling milk over 1,000 years ago. Experts believe that there is more evidence to be found, but even now the caves are a wonderful natural museum. If the walls and ceilings of the caves were all put together, they would form a tapestry(壁毯), 20 kilometers long and 2 meters high!
It won’t be possible to travel back in time — that only happens in films — but visiting these caves would be the nearest experience you could get to travelling back in time.
