A man once had four sons. They never stopped quarreling （争吵） with one another. He often told them life was easy if they worked hard together, but they didn’t _______ him. One day, he called all the _______ together. He put a bundle（捆） of sticks on the floor in front of   _______ .

Li Shizhen was born in 1518. His father was a poor doctor. Li Shizhen often saw that people fell ill. He decided to study medicine so that he could be able to help people.

Li Shizhen read many books about medicine. He found many of the old medical books to be full of mistakes. So his wish was to write a new one.

He did his best to study medical science. He studied not only the herbs(草药) in his own garden, but also the wild ones. He set out many times on longer journeys to collect herbs and talk with old peasants(农民). He learned a lot from the working people.

After many years of hard work and study, Li Shizhen finished his great work “Ben Cao Gang Mu”. At that time he was sixty. His book is now one of the greatest contributions of the Chinese people to the medical science of the world.

Clothing is an important part of any culture. Chinese culture is more than 5, 000 years old, so the traditional Chinese clothing also has a long history.

Hanfu

Hanfu is the traditional clothing of Han people. It first appeared in China more than 3, 000 years ago. But it disappeared with the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. Now more and more young people start to enjoy wearing it.

Zhongshan suit

Zhongshan suit is the traditional clothing named after Sun Yat-sen. It is also known as Mao suit overseas because Chairman Mao liked to wear it. It first appeared in the 1920s.

Tangzhuang

Tangzhuang is a type of Chinese jacket rather than the clothing of the Tang Dynasty. It got the name from the overseas Chinese. The Tang Dynasty was famous in the world, so the overseas Chinese were called “ Tang people” , and their clothes were called “Tangzhuang”.

Cheongsam（Qipao）

The cheongsam（Qipao）is a traditional Chinese dress. It first appeared in China in the 1920s. Cheongsam is made of silk, and Chinese women like to wear it because it can show their beauty.

Yuan Longping is one of the most important scientists. He is the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. He had spent his whole life on hybrid rice.

Food was a big problem in China in the past. It was because China had 22% of the world’s population, but only 7% of its farmland. In the 1960s, China had serious hunger. Millions of people died because they had no food. Yuan Longping was very sad to see this. “How can I help people have enough food.” he thought. He decided to work on a new kind of hybrid rice that had high output（产量）. He and his team studied the rice seeds day and night. At night, in 1973, they grew a new kind of hybrid rice. This rice is strong. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can also fight disease. Its output is much higher than common kinds of rice.

Professor Yuan has already left us, but he will be remembered forever.

The most basic and powerful way to connect with another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our full attention.

When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Just take them in. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understand it. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of saying and meaning “I’m so sorry.” when someone is in pain.

One of my friends told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often broke in to tell her that something similar happened to them. For some reason or other, her pain became a story about them. In the end, she stopped talking to most people. It was just too lonely. We connect through listening. When we break into what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief of having someone just listen.

This simple thing hasn’t been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was young. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has more power to heal and to connect than the kindest words.

A bird went to find its happiness in a faraway place.

It flew and flew when it suddenly saw a little wilting flower. It had a big smile on its face. The bird asked the little flower. “You are going to die. Why are you still so happy?”

“I’m going to bear fruit and my dream will come true.” said the little flower. Then the little bird saw it: Happiness is hope in the heart.

The bird kept flying. It flew and flew when it suddenly saw a lame (瘸的) duck, which was singing a song. It asked the duck. “You are so unlucky. Why are you still so happy?”

“Because I saw a little duck fall. And I helped it stand up again!” Then the little bird saw it. Happiness is love in the heart.

The bird kept flying. It flew and flew when it suddenly saw a spider climbing up a slippery (滑湿的) wall. It fell off the wall several times, but it continued climbing over and over again. The little bird asked the spider, “You failed again and again. Why don’t you have pain but happiness on your face?”

“I am sure to climb up the wall if I try my best. Because of this, I’m so happy.” The little bird saw it. Happiness is faith (信念) in the heart.

The little bird didn’t look for happiness any longer, because it had seen the truth: Happiness is not in the faraway place but in your own heart.

Once upon a time, there was a man named lazy. He wanted to have a big house and it took him over a year to build one. The house was so beautiful that all of his     36     admired him very much.

But as time went by, his house started to have some problems. One day an old neighbor went past it and said,” your house is beautiful, but the grass in the yard is a bit overgrown（杂草丛生）.” Lazy answered     37     .” I know but it’s OK.I will cut it tomorrow.
