Denson is a mechanic(机修工), but he lost his job a few months ago. He is kind and helpful, but always feared applying for a new job.
One day, he gathered up all his courage and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment(约定)was at 10:00 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an old man kicking the tyre(轮胎)of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Denson immediately went up to lend a hand to him. When Denson finished repairing the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Denson said there was no need to pay him and he just helped someone in need, and that he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office. It’s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Denson agreed.
When he arrived at his destination(目的地), Denson found a long line of applicants(求职人)waiting to be interviewed. Denson still had some grease(油脂)on his shirt after repairing the car, but he didn’t think he had enough time to wash it off or change the shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with disappointed looks on their faces. After a long time, Denson’s name was finally called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Denson’s heart sank. “Wearing such a dirty shirt, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned around the chair, and to Denson’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out that he was the general manager of the company. “Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as a member of the company before you even stepped into the office. I just know you’d be a trustworthy(可靠的)worker. Congratulations!”

“Pure love, only for the country”—this is a sentence from the diary of Chen Xiangrong, a 19-year-old Chinese soldier who was stationed(驻扎) at the border of Galwan Valley. Unfortunately, Chen died during a border clash(边境冲突)between Chinese and Indian troops in June 2020.
Last June, Indian soldiers illegally(非法地)crossed to the Chinese side of the Galwan Valley and set up tents, which forced the Chinese troops to react, Xinhua said.
Regimental commander Qi Fabao, 41, led several of his soldiers to negotiate(协商)with the Indian side. However, they were then attacked by Indian soldiers with steel pipes and rocks. Chen Hongjun, 33, Chen Xiangrong, 19, Wang Zhuoran, 24 and Xiao Siyuan, 24, died during the clash. Qi was the only one left alive, but was seriously injured.
It was the first time the Chinese military has made public the number of deaths, the names of the fallen soldiers and details since the clash happened. According to Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian, responsibility(责任)for the Galwan Valley clash falls on India.
On Feb. 19, the Central Military Commission( CMC )honored the two officers and three soldiers for defending the border. Four of them received awards after death. The awards include honorary(荣誉的) titles and first-class merit. In China, an honorary title is the highest award given to a service member in military. A first-class merit is second-highest.
The country has also offered pensions(抚恤金)to the four martyrs’(烈士) families. A team will stay in touch with the family members and help them if needed. The martyrs’ children will also get extra points on the gaokao.
17. “Pure love, only for the country” comes from a diary of Qi Fabao.18. The border clash happened because Indian soldiers illegally crossed the border.
19. The Chinese soldiers planned fight the Indian soldiers with rocks at first.
20. From the passage we know our country has shown great respect for the four martyrs.
The Value of Negative Results
We all avoid failure, and most of us fear it. However, without failure, progress would be impossible. What does success usually come after? Failure. It seems that one cannot exist (存在) without the other.
Accepting failure is not easy for many, though we are often unwilling to accept failure because our professional fame (名誉) depends on success.
In fact, one of the business world’s most famous failures became one of its biggest successes, in part because the product’s makers learned from their mistakes.
All in all, there is a lot we can learn by studying mistakes. Perhaps the most important lesson is that failure and success are two sides of the same coin.
A.One truly cannot exist without the other. |
B.We are brave enough to face difficulties. |
C.In the early 1990s, Apple created a phone called the Apple Newton. |
D.The business world already understands the value of negative results. |
E.The Apple Newton has won popularity with people all over the world. |
F.However, things are slowly changing, especially in business and science. |
G.The story of the Apple Newton can teach us an important lesson about failure. |

It’s 8:30 a.m. at the Chengdu Research Base. Panda keepers are preparing milk for baby pandas’ breakfast. At 9:30 a.m., they find that most of the babies are already awake and hungry. When the babies see the keepers, they nun over to them with excitement and some of the young pandas even walk into their friends and fall over.
Lin Wei, one of the panda keepers, says, “they’re so cute and lovely. I take care of them like they’re my own babies. I wash, feed and play with them every day. They’re very special to me.” In fact, many people around the world love these black and white animals. Pandas have become so popular that they are now a symbol of China.
Scientists say there are now fewer than 2, 000 pandas living in the forests. Another 300 or so live in zoos or research centers in China and other countries. Pandas do not have many babies, maybe only one every two years. The babies often die from illnesses and do not live very long. Adult pandas spend more than 12 hours a day eating about 10 kilos of bamboo. Many years ago, there were a lot more bamboo forests and pandas in China, but then human started to cut down these forests. As the forests get smaller and other human activities cause more problems, pandas cannot find enough to eat and they are having fewer babies.
An education program in Chengdu teaches children about pandas and other endangered wild animals. They send people to schools to tell children about the importance of saving these animals.

Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on our learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something interesting. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
Practicing and learning from mistakes
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, “Use it or lose it”! Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. “Practice makes perfect”. Good learners will keep practicing what they have learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell didn’t invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Developing their study skills
It is not enough to just study hard. Good learners know the best way they can study. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. They also look for ways to review what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge come from questioning.
Learning is a lifelong journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn wisely and learn well.
1. Do successful learners have good habits in learning?
2.(for example) How important is it about interest? (connect, with)
3.(secondly) What’s a good learner’s opinion on mistakes? (and)
4.(thirdly) How to develop their study skills? What about questioning? (by; Also)
5. Why is it important to learn wisely? (because)
