Eight years ago, Chinese skater Wu Dajing introduced himself to the skating world by winning a silver medal at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. At the year of 2018’s Pyeong Chang Olympics, Wu not only returned, but also made history.
On Feb 22th, 2018, Wu won the gold medal in the man’s short-track 500-metre race. He set a new world record with a time of 39.584 seconds. He also became the first Chinese man to take home an Olympic short-track gold medal. BBC said Wu’s win was “flawless”, because he was much faster than all of the other skaters.
“I didn’t give them a chance and I kept my speed from the start,” he told the media after the match.
But China’s short-track teams didn’t do well in general at the Games. Chinese skaters in the woman’s 500 meters, 3000-meter relay and man’s 1500 meters all failed to take home the gold. Wu was China’s biggest hope, which put a lot of pressure on him. But he proved himself with his great performance.
Wu is now known as a highly talented skater. But things were not always that way. When Wu joined the national team in 2010, he was seen as almost “nothing” compared to gifted skaters like Zhou Yang and Fan Kexin, as his coaches said at the time. Their comments made him quite upset. But as the saying goes, “Winners never quit and quitters never win”, Wu didn’t want to give up and worked as hard as he could. He practiced skating all year round. He even didn’t return to his hometown for the holidays for 10 years. “I believe in myself,” he told the media after his match at the Olympics.

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate(激活)an area of the brain called Striaturm. Research also shows that kindness improves people’s mood(情绪). But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is specially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good. So why not set off that chain(链条), of good feelings to people around?
Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present makes friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities(慈善)also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone’s spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.
The story doesn’t end here. Being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you’re in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn’t it?

“For as long as I can remember, mom has been a middle-aged woman, but no one told me she used to be a young girl…This is a line from the film Hi, Mom, as well as the way director and star Jia Ling once felt about her own mother. Released on Feb 12, the film is the directorial debut (导演首秀) of 39-year-old comedian-turned-filmmaker Jia. It has gotten a high score of 8.1 on the movie rating website Douban. Many people said they were touched by its raw (质朴的) emotion.
The film is based on the real-life story of Jia and her mother, showing her missing and regret at failing to see her mother before she died. It reflects on how she misses her late mother Li Huanying, who encouraged Jia to pursue (追求) her artistic dreams. To make the film more appealing, Jia made it a time-travel story. She goes back to 1981 and becomes friends with her own mom, Li Huanying. She risks giving up her own life and disappearing to make sure that her mother has a better future.
The Spring Festival holiday box office (票房) seems to prefer the films “with great family love and a little hurt”, and Hi, Mom has “hit all the right notes”. The film has also been praised for its, sincere description of female (女性的) roles. In the movie, Li is more of a young girl rather than a mother. As Jia says in the movie, “She is not only my mom, but also herself…” The many women who helped make the film, including Jia herself, helped the movie’s female roles shine in ways that had nothing to do with their looks, according to Jiemian News.

Recently, researchers have reported on a different way to break down different kinds of plastic. It could lead to easier, high quality recycling, and help deal with plastic pollution. The world is full of plastic, but only 9% of plastic products are ever recycled. Every year, over 17 trillion pounds of plastic are washed into the oceans.
But bacteria may help recycle, even when humans don’t. Bacteria are tiny living things—so small that you need a microscope (显微镜) to see them. Some bacteria can “eat” other things by changing the chemicals in those things into something that will help the bacteria grow.
Researchers at a French company have discovered a bacterial enzyme (酶) that can breakdown plastic. The enzyme, which was first found in compost (堆肥) leaves, turns plastic into chemical “building blocks” that can then be used to create new products. The enzyme can especially break down PET, a type of plastic that is most commonly used to produce plastic bottles. It is the fifth most common type of plastic that we use.
The new enzyme was uncovered in research that was published last month in the journal Nature. Researchers studied over 100,000 microorganisms (微生物) to find one that could breakdown plastic quickly. The leaf compost enzyme was first discovered in 2012. Scientists changed its genes, allowing it to break down 90% of one ton of plastic in less than 10 hours.
“It had been completely forgotten, but it turned out to be the best,” said Professor Alain Marty, chief science officer at Carbios.

We usually think that plants are quiet in the natural world. Grass doesn’t cry when you cut it; flowers don’t scream when they’re picked. But our human view of the world misses quite a lot. Plants talk to each other all the time.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, release compounds(复合物)into the air to help neighboring plants.
Recently, a team led by Junji Takabayashi of Japan’s Kyoto University has offered some explanations, reported Time magazine.
To start out, they grew potato plants in two plastic boxes connected by a tube(管子). One plant had been bitten by insects(害虫).
They found that when insects bite leaves, the plant doesn’t sit quietly. It releases a chemical called Hex vic into the air. These chemicals carry an odor(气味)that neighboring plants can sense.
It was surprising that plants don’t release a chemical until they get a warning message from their infested neighbors, scientists said. These findings may help farmers with the control of insects which do harm to their plants.
A.But how plants receive and act on many of these signals(信号)is still mysterious. |
B.Their language is chemical. |
C.While the other plant wasn’t bitten. |
D.Hexvic can help plants kill all the insects. |
E.Later, the same scientists place insects on the plants that hadn’t been bitten. |
F.What a mysterious nature we have! |
G.This way, the neighboring plants understand the danger. |
