The moment they are picked up from kindergarten each day, Tan Xinyan and her friends rushed into a playground with new swings, climbing frames and slides.
“I’m surprised that such a small change can bring the children so much joy,” says Tan’s mother Hu Yufeng while talking about the playground in her community.
The appearance in old neighborhoods of well-equipped children’s playgrounds shows that China is taking steps to create better conditions for raising a child.
The country with the largest population is preparing for the low fertility of rates(生育率), at a low level of 1.3 in 2020.
In 2015, China began to allow all couples to have a second child. In 2021, this was▲to three children for each family. It was followed by a series of supportive actions. The country’s new population and family planning law was also made to build a more birth-friendly society.
Even so, most of the couples don’t want to a second or a third child mainly because of the heavy stress of bearing, raising and educating children. As a result, support from local government includes longer paternity leave(产假), extra parental leave and better public services.
Having grown up as the only child in her family, the 35-year-old mother always envied those who hadsiblingsto play with and offer support. However, she doubted whether to have a second child in the beginning, worrying that her parents and parents-in-law are already in their late 60s, and she and her husband both have busy careers.
“If we could not offer the children the attention and care they need for a happy and healthy childhood, we wouldn’t have a second child” Hu says.
As it turns out, she found more happiness with two children. “What doubled is not theworkload, but the joy and good memories they created,” Hu says.
With supportive actions being taken, more mothers-to-be aiming for two or three children are expected to feel the same way.
In general, children are the creators of our future, and it’s the job of us grown-ups to create an environment to make this come true.

If you happen to be hungry, what will you do? Will you have some of your favorite foods? Well, just like your stomach, your mind can also become hungry. But it never lets you know this because you keep it busy thinking about your friends or favorite stars. So while it silently satisfies your needs, you may, without even knowing it, not let it grow. When the mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity will come to a full stop. This may be the reason why we all sometimes think, “What happens next?” or “Why can’t I think?”
Having hunger of the mind is something which can easily be solved by reading widely. Why is reading better than watching TV? This is because reading has always been, going all the way back to our earliest days of childhood through to the person we are today, the greatest tool we have for developing our minds. Since it can also help to develop many other aspects of our lives, reading should be the first thing to help our minds grow. Once you start reading a book and your eyes begin running through its lines, your mind busily tries its best to explain the book’s meanings to you. The interesting parts of the book are stored in your mind like a seed (种子). Now this seed is used by you to develop your own new ideas. This seed, if it is planted many times, can help your ideas branch (发出新枝) out. This is what we call creativity. Also, reading widely can work to increase your vocabulary. In only a few weeks after you have started reading widely, you will be surprised to find that you are able to talk with your friends in English or any other language.
So guys, do give food to your thoughts by reading, reading and then, more reading. What are you waiting for? Go and get a book!
42. What will happen when our minds lose their freedom to grow?A.Our stomachs will be empty. | B.Our needs won’t be satisfied. |

A.By reading different kinds of books. |
B.By reading some books about planting seeds. |
