As we walked slowly downhill to the boats. The doctor told us the story.
“Two months ago,” he began, “Ben found the treasure and dug it up. He carried it on his back, in many tiring journeys, from under the pine tree to a cave he found. That’s when we arrived on the Hispaniola.”
“I went to meet Gunn on the afternoon of the attack,” continued the doctor. “Then when I couldn’t see the ship any more, I visited Silver. I gave him the useless map and the supplies as Ben Gunn had plenty of goats’ meat. With the pirates at the fort we could move to the safety of the cave and guard the money.I thought Jim was sure to be taken to the empty treasure pit with the pirates. So I left the squire and the captain guarding the cave, and arrived at the pit just in time. Gunn went ahead of me, as he could move fast, and he walked on the pirates’ fears by singing and calling out, with great success.
When we got the boats. We destroyed one of them and went in the other toward the North I Inlet. We met the ship just inside the mouth of the river, sailing by itself. It was drifting towards the sea. We anchored it safely then rowed back round to Rum Cave, just below Ben Gunn’s Cave. Gary rowed back to the Hispaniola alone to spend the night there on guard.
At the top of the beach, by Gunn’s cave, we met the squire. He was pleasant and kind to me, with no praise or blame.
And then we entered the cave. It was a large, airy place, with a little spring and a sandy floor. By a big fire lay Captain smollett, and, in the far corner, I could see piles of gold coins and bars of gold. That was Flint’s treasure which we came to Treasure Island to find, and which cost the lives of seventeen men for the Hispaniola. And so many others that it was impossible to say.

Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a necessary part of the learning process. But too often we express to our children either by words or by actions that failure is somethings to be ashamed of.
Donnie was my youngest third-grader. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games that other children played excitedly. He seldom answered questions-he might be wrong. He seldom finished his work because he repeatedly checked with me to be sure he hadn’t made a mistake.
I tried my best to build his self-confidence. But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, a student teacher, was assigned to our classroom. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils, Donnie included, admired her. But even warm-hearted, loving Mary was baffled by this little boy.
Then one morning, we were working on math problems. Donnie had copied the problems with pains-taking neatness and filled in answers for the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left the children with Mary. But when I returned, Donnie was in tears. He’d missed the third problem.
Mary looked at me in despair. Suddenly her face brightened. From the desk we shared, she got a container filled with pencils.
“Look, Donnie,” she said, “I’ve got something to show you.” She removed the pencils and placed them on his desk. “See these pencils , Donnie?” she continued. “They belong to Mrs. Lindstrom and me. See how the erasers are worn? That’s because we make mistakes too. But we erase the mistakes and try again. That’s what you must learn to do, too.”
She kissed him and continued. “I’ll leave one of these pencils on your desk so you’ll remember that everybody makes mistakes, even teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and a slight of a smile.
The pencil became Donnie’s prized possession. That, together with Mary Anne’s frequent encouragement and praise for even Donnie’s small successes, gradually reminded him that it’s all right to make mistakes — as long as you erase them and try again.
34. Why didn’t Donnie play classroom games as other children?A.Because he was afraid to fail. |

At the beginning of the 20th century, a large number of writers combined creative writing with statement of national identity. China’s Lu Xun is a familiar example, along with W.B. Yeats, Ireland’s greatest poet and the founder of the patriotic “Celtic Twilight” cultural movement. A third great literary patriot is the Bengali and Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore(1861-1941).
Tagore renewed Bengali writing, introducing the common people’s language into poetry and writing about the common people too. By showing the value of Bengali literature, he showed the reasons for the independence of India as a nation. It’s no surprise that he strongly supported his country’s independence from the British.
Tagore wasn’t just a poet, but also an novelist, a playwright, and an essayist. The range of his talents made him famous not only in India, but across the world.
His fame led to invitations to travel; on his journeys abroad he met with other famous figures in the arts, politics and sciences. He was W.B, Yeats’ guest in Ireland and once meet Einstein, as well as meeting many world leaders. The inspiration that came from such a varied life fed into his work, giving it an international character.
Since it is so varied, it’s difficult to generalize about Tagore’s writing. But it’s impossible not to notice a strong awareness of loss in it. Take these lines from his poem Golden Boat, included in a book that won him in 1913, world literature’s highest honor, the Nobel Prize. Tagore imagines life as a boat which floats on, leaving him, a dead man, on the shore “All I had achieved was carried off on the golden boat-only I was left behind.”
38. How are Lu Xun, Yeats and Tagore similar?A.They were all at the beginning of the 20th century. | B.They are all wealthy writers. |
C.They are all great literary patriots. | D.They all won the Noble Prize. |
A.Tagore’s writing style. |
B.Tagore’s life in India. |
C.Tagore’s interest in Bengali literature. |
D.Tagore’s support for his country’s independence. |
A.His fame. | B.His journeys abroad. |
C.Other famous figures in the world. | D.His varied life. |
A.Tagore’s love for his motherland. |
B.Tagore’s talents in varied fields. |
C.Tagore’s awareness of loss in his work. |
D.Tagore’s great achievement in world literature. |
