I always remember the first time I got on a horse. I was only a two-year-old boy. From then on, I always asked my parents for a horse. Whenever I saw a horse, I would beg even harder.
When I was four years old, I had Selective Mutism (选择性缄默症) . I stopped speaking to others. I spoke normally to my families, but I was silent at school. My parents were quite worried. They searched for a treatment. At that time, we did not even know the name of my illness. I suffered silently until I was ten years old. My doctor had an idea. He asked me what I wanted more than anything else in the world. He explained that I was going to be given a chance to work for that. I couldn’t believe my good luck. Finally, I whispered “A horse”in my mother’s ear. To get it, I had to try to talk. I had to answer the phone five times per week. I had to make five phone calls to my friends. I had to say one word to my teacher at school every day. For a child with Selective Mutism, saying one word to someone can be as difficult as climbing Qomolangma.
At last, I did all of them. As a reward, I got a perfect pony (小马) , Mario. Soon, we became good friends. When I was with Mario, I forgot all about my problems and felt strong and safe. It seemed to understand me. It changed my whole life.I began to talk!
Now, I am a lawyer (律师) and I live a happy life with my wife and my daughter. I should say “Thank you”to Mario, for it gives me the best gift that I could ever imagine.

We all might be angry now and then. We get angry after hours and hours of homework. We may be angry at a friend’s lie or distrust.Sometimes, we feel even worse after arguing with others or showing our angry in some way. Here are some things you can do to calm yourself and control your temper (脾气) before it gets control of you.
Realize that you’re angry. When you’re angry, you notice it in your body. You feel hot and worried.Anger will often cause changes in our body, such as rapid heartbeat or breathing. If you’re not physically feeling it, you might hear it in the sound of your voice. One way to realize that you’re getting angry is to listen to the volume of your voice. Is it increasing? That’s a sign that you’re getting angry. Once you notice this, try to reduce your voice. Try not to speak too loudly. That will help you calm down.
Follow your body’s signals, safely and slowly. Take deep breaths, in and out. Ask yourself what your body wants to do. If your hands want to clench (紧握) , or you want to shout, you can try to do them safely and slowly. This will stop you from your angry thoughts.
Give yourself a time out. If you find that your friend lied to you and you feel really angry, what will you do next? Have a fight with him? I don’t think so. Walking away gives you time to calm down and collect your thoughts. This also helps you control anger and the situation. Of course, don’t just get away from the problem. Let your friend know that you just need a little private space. Then you may have a good talk with him.
When you find a proper way to realize and control your anger, there will be a happier and wiser you.
24. According to the passage, you may ________ when you are angry.A.feel excited |

It was on a cold winter night that I knew my mother was dying. I travelled miles from home to spend the last night with her. I sat right next to her sick body, reading her long-loved books. It was one of the most difficult and painful times in my life. After she died, for many days, I stayed alone in her room, with a lonely and empty heart. Everything was in silence.
But one evening the silence was broken: I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little dog on the steps. He was thin and poor. I brought him inside, fed him with some fish, and then he fell asleep.
The next morning, I learned that the dog’s owner had moved out, so the little dog was there all alone, just like I was. As I walked back to the house, I tried to work out what to do with him. Taking care of something seemed like the very last thing I wanted to do. But as soon as I opened the door, he ran to me and jumped into my arms. It was clear that he didn’t want to go anywhere.
When the time finally came for me to return home, I had to decide what to do about him. There was no way I would leave without him. From then on, things grew easier. With him around, time seemed to pass much faster.
Five years has gone since my mother died. Over the years, many people have said how nice it was of me to save the dog. But I know that we rescued (拯救) each other. I may have given him a home but he gave me something greater.

Blind people used to get around with the help of a walking stick. They tap it along the ground as they move. At the same time, dogs are trained to help them, too. These guide dogs lead blind people through busy areas. When blind people are in a new place, they can ask others for directions. Then they pass on the information to the guide dog by using the right orders.
Now there is a new technology that can help blind people when they are in a new place. It is GPS (全球定位系统) .GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS can tell a blind exactly where he or she is. It uses satellites (卫星) in space to work.
Blind people who use GPS carry around a tiny receiver. The tiny receiver works like a talking map! First, the receiver gets signals (信号) from satellites in space. Then, a computer guides the user with voice orders. Finally, the user listens for exact directions.
GPS also lets people know what is around them. It tells the name of the street that is coming up. It may even tell the user about a park or a store nearby. Blind GPS users have a better idea about their neighborhood. They feel better about traveling alone. They feel good about getting to new places. Some scientists thought that GPS still has room for improvement. For example, GPS will call the police as soon as possible when the blind people have an emergency in the future. The blind people will live like healthy people with the help of GPS. Their lives will be more convenient and easier.
