文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中美两国的中小学生的课间休息时间的不同的锻炼方式。

As a Chinese student, you probably have morning exercises at school each day. We don’t have this in US schools. I found out about this cultural difference the first day I was in China. My first apartment (公寓) was right next to an elementary school (小学) and I saw the students doing their morning exercises.

In the US, however, only elementary (from kindergarten to 4th grade)and middle school (5th-6th grade) students have exercise time like this. We call it “recess (课间休息) ” . It’s a short daily play period (30 to 45 minutes) where we can play on the playground. My friends and I would play kickball (美式足垒球) and build forts (堡垒) out of big tree branches (树枝) that we found in the woods next to our playground. And in winter, we would sled down (乘雪橇滑下) a big icy hill behind our school

In junior high (7th-8th grade) and high school (9th-12th grade), things are different. We have to move between many different classrooms, as each subject has a different teacher and a different classroom. We have a few minutes between each class to get our books and chat a bit-but only a few minutes. We’re in class almost the entire (全部的) time we’re at school.

Except our one big break-lunch. Junior high and high school students get as much as an hour, sometimes even a little more, to eat and hang out. In my school, older students (grades 11 and 12) were even allowed to go off-campus (离开学校) for meals. Those who had driver’s licenses and cars could drive around our town, listening to music and eating fast food. It was a fun break in the middle of those long school days.

38. In the US, students in grades7 to 12 don’t have recess because ________.
A.they have little time between classesB.they have to do homework during their breaks
C.they are no more interested in exercisingD.they can exercise during PE class instead
39. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.US students have their lunch at school.B.The older students get, the busier they are.
C.US students don’t eat much during lunch.D.High school students get a long lunch break.
40. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? (Paragraph 1-4)
A.B.C.D.

文章大意:本文主要向我们介绍了一个新发明——竹制洗衣机。

Washing clothes is easy for most people living in cities, as washing machines do the job. However, in many rural (农村) areas or poor regions (地区), people have to wash their clothes by hand, as they don’t have electricity or money to buy the machines. Now, a new bamboo washing machine might help them solve this problem.

The machine is a simpler version (版本) of a traditional washing machine. However, it uses the natural flow of water instead of electricity. It has a wooden rotation shaft (转轴) in the center and a bamboo drum (桶) outside. You just put the machine in a river and water will go into the bottom of the machine and rotate the main drum. This creates an eddy (涡流) that cleans clothes.

A 7-member team from the School of Design at Dalian Minzu University created the machine. Their design won the “Best of the Best” prize at the 2020 Red Dot Awards (红点奖).

“There are 836 million people living in extreme poverty (极端贫困) in the world. They have to spend lots of time and energy doing little things like washing clothes. We want the bamboo washing machine to help them free up their time so they can do more meaningful things, like fighting poverty,” said Pan Cheng, one of the designers.

“The best thing about this machine is that it’s cheap and easy to make,” said Yu Yue, another designer. “We give people the rotation shaft and teach them how to set up the machine. They can find bamboo locally and make it into drums. If there is no bamboo, they can also use materials like wood.”

The designers said they spent more than half a year working on the machine. They had countless team meetings and changed their design at least four times. But in the end, they were happy with the results.

Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they express regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something small like moving a cup, full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.

I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s also important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had lost an opportunity to say “I love you” or “forgive you”. When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company, and I wouldn’t be there. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.

I know there will still be occasions (时机) when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is certainly better because of my policy (原则) of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality (不测的事). And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it sometimes takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance (保险) for my happiness.

49. What does the underlined word “regret” mean?
A.懊悔B.聪明C.观点D.请求
50. Why did the writer decide to go to her office on Good Friday?
A.To finish her work before the deadline.
B.To keep her appointment with the eye doctor.
C.To meet her father who was already an old man.
D.To join in the holiday celebration of the company.
51. What can we infer from the passage?
A.We should buy insurance to make our life better
B.Avoiding “if only” can make the writer lose her policy.
C.It is an important thing to avoid “if only” in our daily life.
D.The writer doesn’t have a good relationship with her father
52. What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Emotional HappinessB.The Two Saddest Words
C.The Most Useful RuleD.The Peace of Mind
