Long long ago, a couple had seven sons. They wanted a daughter and finally they had a girl. One day the father needed water for her, so he sent the seven brothers to a well to get it. The boys played and the water jug fell into the well. They were afraid to go home. The father was angry.
“They are probably playing a game and have forgotten about the water. I wish they were all turned into ravens!” And then he saw seven black birds flying away. The father was shocked. But he could not take back his words.

Starting with Chinese shooter Yang Qian, who won the first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games in the women’s 10-meter air rifle on July 24, Yang Li has finished five clay sculptures (雕塑) of Chinese players who won gold medals at the Games. Besides Yang Qian, the players include Wang Shun, Ma Long, Quan Hongchan and Guan Chenchen. Yang, a fine art teacher in Shanxi province, started creating clay sculptures in 2015. Before creating a sculpture, she usually watches videos and photos of the player and then makes the basic shape using clay. “Then I will put the sculpture into the oven for firing, which helps keep the sculpture for long time,” she said. “Last, I will paint it in different colors.”

Ji Yulan, a paper-cut craftswoman, is showing tourists simple paper-cutting skills. Ji takes a piece of paper and begins performing. The scissors swim like a fish in her hand. The paper moves. When she unfolds the paper, an image (形象) of a Xinjiang child appears.
“I have been making paper-cuts for more than 40 years,” Ji said with a laugh. “My dad is over eighty now. He still keeps on paper cutting, although his hands shake when holding scissors.” Influenced by her family, Ji loves paper-cutting. “In the past, my grandma taught me to make paper-cutting portraits with traditional eyes. Now, I know young people like big eyes, so now I make paper-cutting portraits in the shape of big eyes,” Ji joked. For Chinese students, the new term might be a little different from those in the past. In July, China introduced the “double reduction” policy (双减政策). It hopes to reduce students’ learning burden (负担) by reducing homework and after-school classes. Two months has passed since the new term began. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly (A) than before,” said 14-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing.
“We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”
According to Shen, teachers now teach much slower. Students have enough time to learn new knowledge. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research insects in a field. This is a much better way to learn things than just (B) hitting the books.”
For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group where I can learn all kinds of skills,” said Zhang. Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think (C) it is not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. (D) Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points.” Zhang said. Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when they finish their homework early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind others,” he said.

China’s Shenzhou XIII spaceship has successfully docked (对接) with the radial port of the space station core module(核心舱)Tianhe. Many people want to know the differences between male and female astronauts during China’s six-month journey in space. Wang Yaping,a 41-year-old female astronaut from Shandong province in East China, became the first Chinese woman to enter China’s space station.
You may think that it is not convenient for women to take part in the long-time spaceflights, but in fact female astronauts have many advantages over the male astronauts. Women are usually more careful, and normally are better at communicating. These are useful in the long flights. The training for both male and female astronauts is the same, because spaceflight missions(任务)are difficult. Wang will also become China’s first female space walker. This is not only an honor, but also a chance for us to research the advantages female astronauts have when walking outside. Their smaller size is an advantage, as they’ll be able to control their weight better and then perform better.
Wang Yaping plans to study space medicine and space life to prepare future female astronauts for long-term stays in space.
In June 2013,Wang took part in the Shenzhou X mission, which lasted nearly 15 days, and gave China’s first space-based lecture to Chinese students from inside the Tiangong l experimental module. As part of her mission, she is expecting to give her second space-based lecture during her stay.
