Why do you remember Hello Kitty, Snoopy and all the other playful animals? What makes you love them? Well, maybe because they’re like the people around you. Think about it! You may just find a friend or a classmate who is like them. Is he or she?

As sweet as Hello Kitty: She likes to eat cakes. She loves to make new friends. She asks friends about her tea parties. She is warm and sunny and will always help you.

As clever as Snoopy: He went to school when he was nine. He learned to use a typewriter (打印机) in two years! He thinks a lot. He is so clever that you like to be with him.

As sarcastic (刻薄) as Garfield: He sits happily in the seat and says sharp (犀利) words to you. Sometimes he is not nice. He doesn’t really like you? He thinks you’re a fool? No, in his heart, he loves you. He is a friend with hard words but a warm heart.

As naughty (淘气) as Mashimaro: He doesn’t look like a good boy. He has sleepy eyes and looks naughty. He always plays tricks on people. So you get angry with him and don’t like him very much. His mind is active and full of ideas. He tries to be big and catch your eyes. However, he’s still a child.

Walking makes children healthier. In the UK, WOW (Walk once a Week) started in 1995. The idea of the activity was to reduce the number of cars on the road during the rush hour of the day.

The activity in 2015 was a great success. Lots of parents decided to leave the cars at home and walk children to school instead. In fact, over one million children in over 4, 000 schools took part in the event.

“It would be great if more people leave their cars at home and take their children to school on foot. It saves money and makes the traffic better around school gates,” said Andy Bready, one of the organizers of the activity. He thought it was a lot of fun, and was also good for people’s health.

In fact, one fifth of people around the UK use a car during the rush hour of the day to pick up their children after school. But many of these children live very close to school. Walking to school takes them less than ten minutes!

When the weather gets warm, people love to play in the water. Many like to swim in pool, lakes and rivers.     36     But water can be dangerous. About 10 people die from drowning（溺水）each day in the USA. These simple rules may help you enjoy the water safely.

    37     If you can’t swim, don’t go into the water. And take a swimming class. Swimming is much easier than you think. Classes are available at pools, schools and sports centers.

Be careful. Choose to swim in areas with lifeguards（救生员）. If you need help, the lifeguards can help you.     38    

Don’t swim alone. When you do swim, always swim with another person.     39     If something happens, one of you can go and get help.

    40     But when you’re in a boat, wear a life jacket. If you fall into the deep water, you will be safe.

Enjoy the water, but remember safety comes first.

Linda was Tara’s best friend before, but now things are different. Tara is a member of Purple Girls Club and they have some rules about who they can be friends with. Linda isn’t very pretty and doesn’t wear cool clothes.     51     she can’t be in their club. Now Tara is making a name list for her party, and she decides not to invite Linda.

“Tara, come here,” her mother calls from the living room. Tara goes to her mother and sees the school report card     52     her hands.

After months of study, you have some time to relax. So, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, “Why trouble with books? We have the Internet and other media（媒体）that offer a lot more colorful programs. Books are history!” But don’t be fooled. There’s still a lot to be said for reading. One clear reason is that a well-chosen     ①     is a wonderful collection of ② and expressions, as long as you have a good dictionary, of course. Believe me, it’s far easier to get standard English than from the TV or the Internet. ③But an even more important point is that books give you something that modern media can not. The webpage is always full of pictures and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. Though “easy” may be welcome, unluckily it’s of little use for any long-time development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there’s still no substitute for a book. But perhaps the best reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it by yourself means that it’s something you do by and for yourself. You can choose what you want to read. ④It is hard work, but while you are reading, you’ll find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure. Reading can bring us pleasure.
