Most animals can swim right from the first time they go into the water. Ducks, dogs and horses do not have to be taught to swim but a man cannot swim ________ he learns how.

Learning to swim takes time and effort (努力) ________ this is very helpful in many ways when one can swim. In fact, it is a very good form of exercise and doctors strongly encourage people to do it because in swimming all the muscles (肌肉) of the body are used.

In addition, swimming gives great pleasure. How nice it is, on a hot dusty day in summer, to take off one’s clothes, put on one’s bathing suit and plunge (跳入) into the cool water of the sea, and to swim and float until one is ________.

What’s more, swimming may sometimes mean all the difference between life and ________. We never know when we may be in danger from water. We go on a voyage (航海), and the ship is wrecked (失事); or we slip as we are walking along the bank of a river and fall into the water. If we can swim, we have a ________ of saving our lives; but if we cannot swim, we are pretty certain to lose our lives.

Last but not least, if we can swim, we may be able to save other people from drowning (淹死). How fine it is to be able to save another’s life but how sad to see a friend drowning ________ our eyes, when we cannot help him because we cannot swim!

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at Stanford Hospital, I got to know a little girl whose name was Liz. She had a s    70     disease. Her only chance of getting well depended on blood transfusion (输血). Her brother was only 5 years old. He had the same disease. It was a miracle (奇迹) that he lived through the illness.

The doctor explained the situation to the little boy. Then he asked the boy if he would like to g    71     blood to his sister. I saw him think about it for only several seconds before taking a deep breath and saying, “Yes, I’ll do it if it will save Liz.”

During the blood transfusion, he lay in bed b    72     his sister and smiled. With the help of her brother’s blood, the colour returned to Liz’s white cheeks (面颊). However, the boy’s face became pale because he had l    73     blood. He looked up at the doctor and asked in a shaky voice, “Will I start to die right away?”

Because he was young, he had misunderstood the doctor. He thought that he had to give up his l    74     to save his sister. What a mistake! What a great boy!

Minoru Yamasaki was a well-known American architect. He was born in 1912 in Seattle, Washington. His parents came from Japan. Minoru went to college to study architecture. Every summer he worked in a fish factory to help pay for college. Often he worked from four o’clock in the morning till midnight. He slept in a room with 100 other men. Later in life, Yamasaki remembered these times and was always good to his workers.

Yamasaki sometimes dreamed about his work. Once he woke up at three o’clock in the morning. He remembered a building was in his dream. He got up and started to draw. He used a new design for the buildings. These buildings are now the Century Plaza Hotel, and Tower in Los Angeles, California.

Yamasaki was different from other architects. His buildings usually make people feel peaceful and happy. Many of his designs have pools of water, flowers, and windows on the roof to let in light. He always designed buildings to please people. He wanted to give them a place away from the busy ways of modern life.

Yamasaki worked for several companies. But his success began when he started his own company. In 1956, he won the Architect’s First Honor Award for his design of an airport in St. Louis, Missouri. He won two more awards over the next five years. In 1962, he designed the World Trade Center in New York. It was very famous.

Yamasaki had strong opinions (主见) about his buildings. They had to be built his way. He believed in himself all the time. He refused (拒绝) to change the design of his buildings, even if he lost a job.

Minoru Yamasaki died in 1986. He designed more than 300 buildings. People will enjoy the design and beauty of his buildings for a very long time.
