“Welcome to China!” These simple words from volunteer Sun Zeyu warmed the heart of US snowboarder (单板滑雪运动员) Tessa Maud when she arrived in Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics. “The young volunteers who say ‘Welcome to China’ makes me almost cry(哭) every time because they are so nice. We can feel their kindness and warmth, ” said Maud.

Like Sun, many Gen Z—people born(出生) between 1995 and 2010— volunteers served the event with heart. Sun is just such an example of how Gen Z improved cultural and people-to-people communications at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. Active and open-minded, they are bridges between China and outside world. Their excellent abilities and new-age thinking made the Games even more fantastic.

Many players had a great time during the Winter Olympics with the help of volunteers. These young volunteers not only helped them when necessary, but also told many things about Chinese culture such as Chinese traditional festivals, history and special Chinese food. Maud shared what she ate every day on the Internet—fired rice, gongbao chicken and Pelking duck. What to eat each day was a hard choice for her. “ Everything is so good. ”she said.

Jenise Spiteri is a snowboarder from Malta. She became known as the “red bean bun(红豆包) girl” in China after she took a big bite at the Chinese special while waiting for her score(得分). “Goodbye to the wonderful workers who served our food every day,” she wrote on the Internet when she left the Olympic Village. In the picture, she holds a big red bean bun.

Tea to people in eastern countries is like air or water. It’s something that they can’t live without.

When I was young, I experienced a neighbor’s warm kindness. I was very sad after losing a long-term friendship. My neighbor invited me to have tea at her home one evening.

That night, she took out a beautiful tea set. She told me all about her story. She came to America because she lost someone she loved. She told me, over that cup of tea, that her pain(痛苦) was gone. She advised me to think about how to go forward. We ended our evening tea at 2:00 a.m. It was truly a heartwarming and unforgettable cup of tea.

Years later I taught English in Japan. One student showed me her thanks in a special way after her lessons ended. In the final lesson, she brought her tea set—a lovely box with all the things that were needed. She quietly poured green tea into a bowl, added hot water, whisked(搅拌) it carefully with a brush on top!After finishing it，she silently held it out to me to drink with both hands. I was surprised at her tea art show and her kind heart. It was so much more than a cup of tea!

When you feel unhappy, why not have a cup of tea and enjoy how relaxed and happy it makes you feel?

Yang Hongwei is a famous kite-maker in Weifang. When she was young, she always stayed in her grandfather’s workshop, seeing the tiny (细小的) wood turning into kites and the beautiful kites     61     into the sky. “When I first saw the kite, my eyes were     62     caught by it,” said Yang.

Yang learned to make kites from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing the     63     for over ten years, she started her own shop in 1992. “Many places around the world have a tradition of flying kites,” Yang said, “But I think the     64     idea behind our kites is special.”

Many junior 3 students across China recently took the P. E test. It has a point of 30 to 60 in zhongkao.     71     Many students like Sun have to train hard for it.

    72     “Since seventh grade, I’ve been practicing every weekend for two hours. I kept doing many exercises such as 800-meter run and basketball,” she said. In 2022, when Gong takes the test, the P. E test will be 60 points in zhongkao. “    73    ” Gong said. “By preparing for the test, we can exercise and relax more.”

However, not all students enjoy it. Liu Jiawei from Songyuan, Jilin will take the test soon. He often feels tired from practicing every day. “    74    ” Liu said. “In a simulated (模拟的) P. E test, I got only 20 points out of 50. This will make a big difference to my overall Tanking (总排名) in zhongkao. ”     75     “Our teachers usually used our P. E classes for other subjects, such as math, but now they are not taking away our P. E classes anymore!”

Fourteen years later, the memory of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (地震) is still fresh for many Chinese people. A new movie about the earthquake came out.

The film Wonder in the Temple comes from a true story. When the earthquake happened, most of the buildings in Shifang, Sichuan fell down and became dangerous. But a Buddhist temple stood and offered room and food to many pregnant(怀孕的) women. In the temple, 108 new babies come into the world. “After many people passed away, there were new lives, ” said the film’s director Kong Jiahuan.“These 108 new lives brought hope to people who experienced the darkest time.”

The film shows many touching stories during the earthquake. At that time, some people worried that letting pregnant women stay would break the monks’ taboo(僧律). The abbot(住持) from the temple said,“The biggest taboo for us is to leave people in danger.” After the earthquake, the mothers made a robe(袍子) for the abbot with 108 pieces of cloth from each of the babies’ clothes.

Ten years later, the film team came to Shifang. Again, the kind city reached out its helping hand. Over 4, 000 people there volunteered to appear in the movie, staying up all night in the rain to make a saving scene(场景). “They helped us a lot. No one said anything bad about it. Everyone was serious about the filming,” Kong said.

“We wanted to make a film that helps people see that we need to understand and help each other in difficult times,” Kong added.
