On a cold January day, Jimmy and his father were skating on a lake. Suddenly the ice near Jimmy ________, and he fell into the cold water. Jimmy’s father jumped into the water, but he couldn’t find Jimmy. Several minutes passed. The father ________ couldn’t find Jimmy. Some firemen (消防队员) arrived. Twenty minutes later they found Jimmy and got ________ out of the water. Jimmy was not breathing, and his heart was not beating. The situation seemed ________. It is important for you to learn some knowledge (知识) about first aid (急救) in your everyday life. If a person has an accident, other people should try their best to help him in time. When you give first aid, you must know several things. First, when a person stops breathing, open his mouth. Second, if a person cannot breathe, you can use a mouth-to-mouth way to help him. Third, if a person is hurt by a knife, you should stop the bleeding at once, you can clean it and put a piece of clean paper round the cut. If a person loses one third of the blood, he may die.

Many accidents may happen at home. All parents should know first aid to deal with common injuries(伤害) which may happen to their children. When a person is burnt(烧伤), wash and cool the area of the skin(皮肤) under the cold water for a while. Then put a piece of dry clean cloth over the burn. If a person cuts his finger, clean it and put a piece of paper round the cut.

Besides, you must put dangerous articles (物品) in safe places where children cannot touch them. Children must be told of the danger. Everybody should know some first aid to save life. Sometimes, life or death is just decided in a few seconds.

From middle school to college, I volunteered in many places. And I really felt happy, because I understand that true happiness comes from helping others.

For three years, I went to a primary school once a week to help a group of girls and boys with math, and sometimes English. I can still remember the feeling of happiness of being called a teacher, and the look of joy on the children’s face when they could work out math problems. Most of all, I was so happy because they did very well in the math tests.

I felt good to be with the children. They liked to tell me their dreams or future plans. I became not only their after-school teacher but also their best friend.

Looking back now, I learned much more from the three years’ experience than I gave to the children. I’m planning to go on volunteering in the future, because I know it’ll bring me more happiness.

Lots of students are too busy doing their homework to help out with housework. So, many parents want to know if they should give their children chores. Well, there’s no need to worry.     31    .

First, doing chores helps children learn to be independent. Parents can’t stay by their children’s side all the time.     32    . And these skills will help them be ready for the day when they go to college or take care of their own houses.

    33    . When children finish a chore, they will not only take pride in a job well done but also have confidence in their ability to do things well.

Third, doing chores makes it possible for children to develop good relationships with their family, friends and partners. Doing chores together with family can make children care more for their family. And they begin to learn their responsibility in a family or a group.     34    . They will know that if they work together with others as a team, things will be completed quicker and better.
