As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”This is the way the charity organization Heifer International (国际小母牛慈善组织)wants to end world hunger.
It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was“not a cup, but a cow”.
Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International was set up.
On Heifer International’s website, you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies. With more and more animals, these families will be able to support themselves. Once these families get better lives, they will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources(资源) for programs run by Heifer International to help more families.
The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal’s first female(雄性) baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule.
However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on
working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.

阅读理解-单选(约480词) | 适中(0.65)
文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了保守秘密困难的原因,以及当我们不想保守别人的秘密或不小心泄露了别人的秘密时,我们应该怎样做。

“Don’t tell anyone!” is likely a phrase you have heard before or after someone tells you a secret. But why is it so hard not to spill the beans? One Baylor College of Medicine expert explains why this is a challenge.

“A secret often includes something that someone does not take pride in. They’ve chosen someone to tell the secret, but don’t want other people to know about it because they feel like if it gets out, it could damage (破坏) their fame,” said Dr Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Bavlor. “However, it can be hard for the person to keep that to themselves because it may become a burden (负担).”

As soon as you tell somebody not to repeat your secret, people want to share it with somebody else. In addition most people have a confidant (知己) so when you share information with yours, keep in mind that they likely will share it with their own confidants.

With secrets so often getting out, why do people share them in the first place? “One reason is that people often feel like it will help them keep close friendship with others,” Shah said. However, connecting telling someone your secrets with how close you are to them is not always advisable. It is important for people to understand that they can have close relationships without sharing their secrets necessarily.

“Another reason why people often tell a secret is that they feel guilty about keeping it,” said Shah. “For example, if your friend tells you a secret but you do not share it with your close friends, you may feel guilty about not telling them. If you do not share certain things with your close family members, a sense of distrust can develop. Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone.”

He added that people who are more talkative may by accident let a secret out but that does not necessarily mean it is a good idea to share secrets with someone who is quieter. If somebody is quiet and keeps everything in, it may cause them to have more stress, and finally they will talk to somebody else.

If you do not want to be responsible ( 负责的) for keeping someone’s secret, it is best to be honest and tell the person you do not want to know his or her secret.

“If you end up accidentally sharing a secret with somebody else, it is best to be honest and let the person know that you shared his or her secret,” Shah said.

38. What does the underlined phrase “spill the beans” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Tell the secret.B.Face the challenge.C.Keep the secret.D.Avoid the challenge.
39. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.It is unnecessary to keep secrets.
B.Close friends should share secrets with each other.
C.Sharing secrets will help you get the trust of someone.
D.Real friendship shouldn’t be based on whether or not secrets are shared.
40. In Shah’s opinion, if we by accident share our friends’ secrets with others, we should ________.
A.hide the truthB.tell them the truthC.break up with themD.share a secret with them
41. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Quiet persons are sure to keep the secret for you.
B.Talkative persons will always let out secrets.
C.Everyone has a confidant to share secrets with.
D.We might hurt our friends if we let out their secrets.

真题
We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self-improvement power. However, there’s always something staring at us right under our nose but we don’t see it. The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst.
When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and difficult.
The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self-improvement power is when the whole world is falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change, but change becomes more painful when we ignore(忽视) it,
Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another. we are all going to finally unlock our self-improvement power not because the world says so. But because we realize it's for our own good.
Happy people don’t just accept change; they embrace (拥抱)it. Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.
Jane always tells everyone that she doesn't have the courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!
Self-improvement may not be everybody’s favorite word, but if we look at things in a different way, we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved. Three sessions in a week at the gym would result in a healthier life. Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we’re beginning to take things light and become happy.
42. The writer mentions the three questions in Paragraph 2 to show that      .
A.we learn our lessons when we experience pain.
B.we are responsible for the problems we meet.
C.life fails us when we get into the wrong way.
D.life is a long journey full of ups and downs.
43. What is the key to solving Jane’s problem?
A.She needs to remember why she started.
B.She has to know how to get on with people.
C.She has to realize she is not what she is in her story.
D.She needs to understand the importance of confidence.
44. The writer probably agrees that       .
A.the world tells us how to improve ourselves.
B.people change when they find it easy to do that.
C.welcoming change in life is a drive to become better.
D.enjoying the process of self-improvement makes life simpler.
45. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is it important to take things light?
B.Is it necessary to embrace challenges?
C.To hold on to the last moment or to give up?
D.To free ourselves out of the box or to stay in it?

Floodwaters may not look all that dangerous on TV, especially if you’re a skilled swimmer. But flash floods, like what recently happened in Sichuan, are actually very dangerous. They can happen with almost no warning.     71

Prevention is always your best chance of living through a flash flood. Flash floods can happen without clear signs like clouds and heavy rain.     72     As soon as you receive words of a flash flood, head for higher ground at once.

If you see floodwaters, avoid all moving water, even if it seems to be very shallow.     73     You could hit your head, break a bone, or worse, get swept away into much deeper, faster-moving water. Any place where the water is above your foot is dangerous.

If you have no choice but to walk through water, go where the water is shallow and isn’t moving. If necessary use a stick to check the depth as you walk. As you make your way to higher ground, avoid touching or getting near electrical equipment.     74     And if flood waters have reached your home, do not use your home’s power.

If you get swept away by floodwaters, catch or climb onto something as soon as you are able.     75     It’s hard for rescue teams to find people stuck in the water, so anything you can do to make yourself more noticeable is a big help. Don’t give up keep shouting and waving until you’re rescued.

A.So be sure to check the local weather report.
B.Shout loudly for help and wave an arm if possible.
C.Just six inches of moving water can knock you over.
D.That is because you’re probably wet or standing in water.
E.Here is what you should do to save yourself in a flash flood.
