I’ll never forget New Year’s Day in 1946. I was twelve, my little sister, Ocy, was ten and my older sister, Darlene, was fourteen. We lived at home with our mother, and the four of us knew what we should do without dad. My dad had died five years before leaving Mom with no money and three school-aged kids to raise.

By 1946, a month before New Year’s Day, Mr. White, our warm-hearted neighbor, announced that a money-raising activity would be taken to help a poor family. We talked about what we could do. We decided to buy fifty pounds of potatoes and lived on them for a month. This would allow us to save twenty dollars of our grocery money for the donation. Then we thought that if we turned our electric lights off as much as possible, we’d save money on that month’s electric bill.

The night before New Year’s Day, we were so excited that we could hardly sleep. We didn’t care that we wouldn’t have new clothes for New Year’s Day; we had seventy dollars for the activity. We could hardly wait to offer our help!

Finally, the day came. When the activity began, mom put in a ten-dollar bill and each of us kids put in a twenty-dollar bill. We sang all the way home. Over lunch, mom had a surprise for us. She had bought a dozen eggs, and we had boiled eggs with our fried potatoes!

Later that afternoon Mr. White dropped by. Mom went to the door, talked with him for a moment, and then came back with an envelope in her hand. We asked what it was, but she didn’t say a word. She opened the envelope and out fell a bunch of money.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了张骞与丝绸之路。

The ancient silk road was a once in a life time journey. It was one of the most important milestones of trade and culture in world history, and the pioneer, Zhang Qian, could not be easily forgotten by history. He was an outstanding diplomat, traveler and explorer in the Han Dynasty of China, honored as the “the first Chinese to open their eyes to see the world” and “the Columbus of the east”.

In 138 BC, at the reign of Emperor Wudi, Zhang Qian was sent to the west of China for an alliance with the Yue-chi people to fight against the Xiongnu. He started his trip from Chang’an(now Xi’an in Shaanxi Province)to Longxi (in Gansu Province). Along the way, no matter how difficult the environment was, his faith was firm. But unfortunately, Zhang was caught by the Xiongnu people just as he left Han, and was held prisoner for ten years.

Zhang finally managed to escape with some of his men and continued to travel west without any dry food or drinking water. Due to the excellent skill of shooting arrows, they survived by eating some birds and other animals along the way. When Zhang at last reached the Yue-chi in Northern India, he was disappointed to find that they didn’t want to fight against the Xiongnu people. On the return journey, Zhang Qian and his men were again caught. It was not until 125 BC that they returned to Chang’an.

Though Zhang hadn’t finished his mission, he brought back first-hand information on the geography, ethnography, and societies of Central Asia. The paths Zhang Qian explored later served as the highways connecting Europe, the Middle East, Mesopotamia, Central Asia, and East Asia. Commodities, crops, animals, religions, ideas, music, technology, and artifacts have been transported by diplomats, merchants and soldiers along this network of highways, which have, since the 19th century been known as the “Silk Road”. If you are always told you’re a genius, will it have any influence on your work? Will it make you work harder and face the difficulties more bravely because you know your ability, or will it make you become lazier because you know you’re already ahead? In a series of studies, Dweck and her team made experiment on 400 fifth graders from different parts of the United States.

First, participants(参加者)were given a series of puzzles to test their IQ. After they finished their test, they were told their scores and praised in different ways. One group of participants were praised for their intelligence and were told -You got X number correct. That’s really good score. You must be very smart at this. Another group of participants were told, "You must have worked really hard." The students were then given a choice as to what kind of test they would take next. They could either take one that’s harder than the first one, or one that’s just as easy. A majority of the children who were praised for their intelligence chose to take the easy test whereas, 90% of those praised for their efforts chose to do the harder puzzles.

While Dweck’s series of studies centered on children, it’s important to notice how having a particular mindset(心态)can influence you at any age. As someone with a fixed (固执的)mindset, you believe basic qualities—like-intelligence—are unchangeable. Since you are often praised for your intelligence, you want to continue remaining intelligent in the eyes of others so you shy away from challenges.

However, as someone with a growth mindset you believe the harder you try, the more you’ll improve. You are not afraid of taking risks, even if there’s a big chance that you’ll all flat on your face along the way. More and more researches support the growth mindset," Dweck wrote in the journal Educational Leadership.“Basic aspects of intelligence can be strengthened through learning and adventures, and efforts and persistence in the face of challenges are key ingredients in outstanding achievements.”

Dweck’s studies teach us an important lesson about success. A person’s intelligence can only take him or her to certain distance. The rest of the way is paved by bravery and determination.

34. What do Dweck and her team want to find out?
A.The influence of praise on people.B.The IQ of each participant.
C.The best way to achieve success.D.The positive influence of difficulties.
35. What can we learn from Paragnph 2 and 3?
A.Participant received three experiments in total.
B.Kids praised for their efforts later chose easier tests.
C.One group of participants was smarter than the other group.
D.Kids praised for their IQ later became afraid to fail.
36. According to Paragraph 4, a man with a growth mindset ________.
A.will go through much more failuresB.is more likely to meet with difficulties
C.is willing to challenge himselfD.is more likely to become an educational leader
37. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.give the reasons for the studiesB.show the findings of the studies
C.describe the weak points of the studiesD.introduce the methods of the studies

Bored with your life? Dreaming of something different? When I feel like that I look up and wonder what life would be like 400 km above my head.     41     Six astronauts have lived and worked on board for months.

How do they sleep?     42     American astronaut Sunita Williams explains: “It’s like a little phone box but it’s pretty comfortable and it doesn’t matter if I turn over and sleep upside down. I don’t feel I’m upside down.”

43     Can you imagine the mess that running water would make in zero gravity? Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield uses a straw(吸管)to put a big blob of water from a bag onto an ordinary toothbrush and adds a little toothpaste(牙膏)—which he has to eat when he’s done.

Daily exercise is necessary. The lack of gravity makes bones more fragile(易碎的)and muscles(肌肉)lose strength.     44

The role of astronauts in the International Space Station is to act as lab technicians(技工)for scientists on the Earth.     45     Almost every task is carefully planned by control—although most astronauts spend their first days losing things until they get used to sticking (固定)everything they use on the walls.

One of their most unforgettable things is the view from “the office” controlled by that big blue ball down there, sitting in the darkness of space. Wow! Completely breathtaking!

A.They spend the night floating in a sleeping bag inside a small room.
B.Therefore, astronauts are encouraged to work out for at least two hours a day.
C.So they spend their time protecting their environment and performing and watching experiments in the space about the size of a Boeing 747.
