Few people would be foolish enough to walk among lions and other wild animals. Today you can drive safely through wild animal country, if you keep your car windows closed. There are a number of such open-space zoos in the United States. The first was opened in 1967 in Florida. It is called Lion Country Safari. Lion Country Safari has 650 acres full of wild African animals. There are many lions and about 350 other animals such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, and chimps. To keep visitors safe there are a few rules—no cloth-top convertibles, all windows closed, and no getting out of cars.
For those who like to get closer to the animals, there is a petting section where there are baby animals only. It’s safer that way.

Jane has been living in China for more than two years and she has come to know some of the differences between Western and Chinese culture. Here is what she has to say about this.
“In China people often try to avoid conflicts. If somebody does something you don’t like, you may be upset, but you should hide it, keep it inside, and act like nothing is wrong. If you must do something, you should not talk to the person directly, but talk to someone else. However, in western countries, things are different. If someone does something I don’t like, I may say it nicely or I may get very angry, but at least I will do something. Also, I won’t talk to other persons about it and instead I will talk to the person directly. In fact, in western countries, if you say something bad about a person to someone else, it is thought that you have a bad character.”
She also told me another thing. “Every time I go out, people ask, ‘Where are you going?’ I am really tired of these.” It’s time for us to pay more attention to the culture difference.

Jason and his father were going to the grocery store by car to pick up some apples. It had been an unusual day. The sky was dark but there were few clouds. As they drove up the street, there started to be a rumbling (隆隆的) sound heard across the around.
Jason’s father immediately realized that a tornado (龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out immediately. Jason and his father got out of the car and made their way to the closest building. By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Debris was falling all over the place. Jason couldn’t see his dad anymore. He also realized that he wasn’t getting to the building fast enough. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.
As he made his way towards the building, he noticed a field to his right. He could see an irrigation ditch (灌溉渠). In a panic, he scrambled (爬) to the ditch and lay flat on the ground. More debris and objects flew overhead. His heart was beating hard, and he was nervous. He had never been in a tornado before.
After a while, the winds died down and the loud roaring sound was gone. Jason slowly lifted his head and nervously looked around. ▲ Jason could hardly recognize the building in front of him because of all the damage.
He stood up with shaky legs and walked to the building. Once there, he pushed the door open and went inside. It was a public building owned by the city. It was empty, but Jason could hear noises further inside. He walked into the large room and saw his dad. He ran across the room and gave him a big hug.
“Jason! How are you? I’ve been worried sick about you!” said his father. “I couldn’t find you anywhere!”
Jason breathed a sigh of a relief(松了一口气) and sat down. He did have a story to tell!

Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activities. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms— football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a ▲ of climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure(闲暇).
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore(忽视), but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve his skills year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
17. What sports are popular among people in winter in the passage?A.Mountaineering. | B.Cycling and hockey. | C.Skiing and skating. |
A.strong love | B.better skill | C.good reason |
A.Because it is too dangerous for climbers. |
B.Because it can’t bring people joy or leisure. |
C.Because it is free for climbers to use their own methods. |
A.Mountaineering is not attractive to people. |
B.It is possible for an old man of fifty or sixty to climb the Alps. |
C.Physical quality is more important than mental one for climbers. |
