Have you ever heard an English idiom, understood every word used in it, but still been confused about what it means? Don’t worry. Native (本土的) speakers experience this too. And there’s a good reason for it: Idioms get their meanings from how they are used. Here are some of the strangest English idioms.
If someone tells you that something really “gets their goat”, it doesn’t mean that a farm animal has been stolen! Instead, it means that something really annoys them and they may be very unhappy. While it’s not certain, some people believe this phrase comes from a horse racing tradition in which people would keep goats with horses before a race to keep them calm. So if their goats are taken away, their horses may get nervous. What will they think of it?
Another strange animal donkey’s phrase is “donkey’s years”, used in British English to describe a very long time. This expression may come from a joke about the ears of a donkey, which are quite long. “Donkey’s ears” was changed to “donkey’s years” for talking about time.
Here comes the phrase “talk turkey”. An Indian and a white man went hunting (打猎) together and a wild turkey and a crow were all the results that day. The white man, made a decision and in the usual style of making a bargain (讨价还价) with the Indian in this way: “Now, you may have your choice: you take the crow, and I’ll take the turkey; or, if you’d rather, I’ll take the crow and you take the turkey.” The Indian knew that the white man wanted to take the turkey but he wanted to show that he was generous. So the Indian said, “You want the turkey, so you can take the turkey. Why not talk turkey to me a bit?” So “talk turkey” means “talk straightly”.

C.the turkey better than the crow | D.neither the turkey nor the crow |
A.the stories behind them | B.native speakers’ ideas |
C.native English dictionaies | D.the words they include |

People already knew that pigs can learn to “sit” and “come” as we order. Research shows pigs are even cleverer than we thought. They are able to play video games.
Researchers at Purdue University in the USA did the research on pigs’ game skills. The researchers were surprised that their test pigs were able to play some games. Researchers got four pigs, named Ebony, Hamlet, Ivory and Omelet, to play a simple game at different levels. They had to move a handle (把手) with their nose to make a cursor (光标) move to a bright blue wall on the screen. If they were successful, they got a delicious treat. Dr. Candace Coney, the leader, said, “It’s very clear that they understood what they were being asked to do.” The research is in a paper in the magazine Frontiers in Psychology.
It took a lot of efforts to do the research. The pigs spent many days playing the game. During the last 50 rounds, the pigs played the game at three different levels. If they were successful at one level, they moved to the next level. The higher the levels, the better the treats. A scientist said, “The pigs clearly understood the connection between their own behavior, the handle, and what was happening on the screen. It was not a snap for them.”
Dr. Coney said, “It is important to understand how pigs get information, and what they are able to learn and remember. This will help us to learn what pigs think of interacting (互动) with humans and understand what pigs think of different environments..

Shenzhou XIII taikonauts’ (航天员的) six-month stay at the Tiangong space station is wrapping up. Now they face one last test of their scientific and space travel skills — returning home safely. Before they come back to Earth in mid-April, what needs to be done before leaving the space station?
If you are coming home after a long journey, you have to pack up. For astronauts in space, they need to “pack” both experimental (实验的) information and samples (样品) and their personal belongings, so they can be further researched on the Earth.
The astronauts have to tidy up many objects, including goods on the Tianzhou 3 cargo (货物) spacecraft, according to Zhong Weiwei, a researcher at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center.
Since the space station has no room service, no one helps the three astronauts to “clean the house”. They need to collect a great amount of waste. This includes leftover food, sanitary (卫生) waste and waste from in-orbit experiments. The waste is then put into the orbital module (轨道舱), and the orbital module burns up as it re-enters Earth’s atmosphere.
They must put all equipment (设备) in place correctly since there will be a gap of more than one month before the astronauts of Shenzhou XIV enter the space station, according to Zhong. The three members need to make sure some items, such as gym equipment, are fixed to the walls to keep them from floating.
Astronauts experience microgravity (微重力) for long periods of time during their stays on the space station, which has an effect on their bodies. This includes a loss of fluid (体液), muscle atrophy (萎缩). What’s more, they lose bone.
To make sure of their safe return, the three taikonauts have been doing physical exercise to train their muscles for the return to the Earth. Based on their in-orbit physical examinations, experts have customized (定制) exercise plans for each of them to have a safe landing, Zhong told China Daily.
