Finally, you finish all your schoolwork and sit back in your chair. Suddenly you feel a headache and realize your eyes are painful. What’s going on? Doctors say that many students are spending too much time in front of screens, especially during online classes. The following might be of some help to you.
THE 20-20-20 RULE
This gives your eyes a break from long screen time: It suggests looking at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds after 20 minutes of work on the screen. You can then continue working.
●Studies show that people blink (眨眼睛) less often when looking at a screen. Keep your eyes wet by blinking often or using eye drops.
●Sit up straight about an arm’s length (长度) away from the screen. Make sure you’re looking down at your screen. Stand up and exercise often to avoid neck and shoulder pain.
●What about blue light blocking glasses (防蓝光眼镜)? They may look cool, but research shows that blue light isn’t the biggest cause of eye tiredness. So ask doctors about computer glasses before putting them on.

Judy lives by the sea with her mother and grandmother. Her mother works very hard in a restaurant. Judy wanted to do something to make her mother happy.
Her mother has collected many kinds of shells (贝壳) since she was young. One day Judy asked her mother why she stopped collecting shells. Mum said she was busy working and had no time. “But I like looking at them,” she said, “Every shell reminds me of a happy time in my life.” Her mother picked up a white shell and said, “This is a Scotch Bonnet. I found it the day before you were born.” She showed Judy one shell after another, and then said, “I’ve always wanted a Queen Helmet Conch. But it’s hard to find.” Hearing that, Judy knew what surprise she could give her mother.
For the next few weeks, Judy’s grandmother took her to the beach every day. She looked and looked, but she didn’t find a Queen Helmet Conch anywhere.
“Maybe you can buy one for her,” said Grandma. But Judy didn’t agree.
One day Judy saw the tip (尖端) of a shell sticking out of the sand. She dug it up. It was a beautiful Queen Helmet Conch!
That night, when Judy’s mother came home, Judy showed her the shell. “She spent weeks looking for this,” Grandma said.
Mum said happily, “Thank you for what you have done for me.”

In the past, African penguins (企鹅) laid their eggs in holes dug in their own guano (粪便). But in the 1800s, most of the guano was shipped by traders to the UK, where it was used to make plants grow better. Since then, many penguins have nested (筑巢) in the open. It’s easy for them to get heatstroke (中暑). Shaun Welman, an animal expert, has seen penguins sitting with their eyes closed, heads drooping (下垂) and mouths open in the burning midday heat, trying to protect their eggs.
Because penguins evolved (进化) to keep heat in cold water, they can easily overheat on land. Usually, penguins leave their nests regularly to cool off in the sea. But without proper holes, this leaves their eggs unprotected.
“Now the African penguin is on the endangered species list, mainly because of human,” Welman says. Since 1900, the African penguin population has dropped from three million to only 48,000.
Luckily, a team of researchers seems to have found a way. Over the past years, the team has put more than 1 ,500 handmade ceramic (陶瓷的) nest boxes in five areas where the penguins live, including Bird Island in Algoa Bay, South Africa, which is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining African penguins. Looking like small round houses, the double-walled ceramic nests can keep African penguins cool.
The ceramic nests remain around 1℃ lower than a penguin’s resting body temperature, which is about 37℃. “The nests are so useful,” Welman says. “Even if adults had to leave nests for some reason, their eggs would never be at any risk of overheating.” In an experiment, the team recorded ground temperatures of nearly 51℃ outside a ceramic nest box, while only 23℃ inside.
Welman adds that African penguins, which nest in the open, will be increasingly influenced by their environment as the climate (气候) changes.

Recently a young P. E. teacher in a middle school in Hangzhou volunteered to work as a head teacher (班主任) and has been doing the job for over months under pressure, of course.
Some feared that the P.E. teacher, Ms. Su, may not know the main subjects well, which might negatively (负面地) influence students’ studies. This is because, traditionally, students in a certain class are influenced by the major (专业课) of their head teacher.
Others expressed their support for Ms. Su. They said that with less pressure in teaching, P. E. teacher would pay more attention to class management, and be more patient and caring with students.
Ms. Su explained in an interview that she majored in P. E. at university while she took lessons in the arts and science, too. She was sure she could successfully manage her class.
The news soon became a hot topic on the Internet. Many people shared their stories and ideas on this topic:
“Our head teacher in high school was a P. E. teacher. Our average score (平均分) in every test was higher than that in other classes.
“I once had a music teacher that became a head teacher. She was popular among the kids. She was humorous and energetic,
“As a parent, it may not feel so good if a kid is in a class with a head teacher who teaches P. E., because it seems that the school does not pay much attention to this class.”

Joey was happy because he had many special friends, four squirrels, two rabbits, and many colorful birds. At the meal time, these wild animals came near to the family and they would feed these special friends.
In the large yard stood thirteen trees of different sizes. One day, while Joey was playing with his sister under the trees, he noticed that a tree trunk (树干) had a sad look. He ran into the house to tell his mom about it. She told Joey to find the reason why it was sad.
So Joey went into the yard, ran to the sad tree and asked, “Why are you unhappy?”
“I am the smallest tree around. The birds don’t fly to me. The rabbits don’t eat grass under me. The squirrels don’t climb to my top. Nobody needs me or loves me,” replied the sad tree.
After knowing the reason, the family had a meeting. Joey suggested making a seat under the sad tree. Joey’s father said he could help make a seat around the tree. The family would sit under the tree and the tree wouldn’t feel sad anymore.
When Joey told his special friends the tree was sad, they decided to do what they could to help make the sad tree happy again.
Early the next morning, when Joey woke up, he noticed birds singing happily in the little tree and saw squirrels running up and down in it. Rabbits were eating the fresh grass around the tree. The little tree was happy again.
Joey ran inside to tell the good news to his family. Joey’s mother and father went into the yard and saw the happy tree.
