How was your sleep last night? World Sleep Day fell on March 17 this year. The theme was “sleep is essential (关键的) for health”. How can we have healthy sleep? Take a look at some tips.
Waking up naturally
Waking up to a ringing alarm is never fun. Studies showed that when you get “shocked” by the alarm, your breathing will go up from 16 to 24 breaths per minute. Your heart will have 10 more beats every minute. Your blood pressure will rise. “This is a very unhappy way to start the day, ”sleep scientist Whitney Robin told the online magazine Bustle. You’ll feel worse if you fall back to get a few more minutes of sleep. “This will confuse (使迷惑) your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle (循环), ” said Robin. So what should we do? Try to use an alarm with softer and lower sounds. Or leave a crack (缝隙) in the curtains—the rising sun will wake you up.
Sleep early, get up early
Some young people may go to bed late and get up late, such as sleeping from 2 am to 10 am. They think as long as they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine. But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature (温度) to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel stuck between sleep and being awake. That’s why sometimes we feel even more tired after oversleeping.
If this happens a lot and affects daily life like school or work, it might be called delayed sleep phase syndrome (睡眠周期延迟症候群). There are special treatments(治疗)that can help, like using light to help change sleeping habits.

The Giant’s garden was a lovely large one, with soft green grass. The children used to go and play in it. Over top the grass were beautiful flowers that stood out like stars, and there were twelve peach trees in the garden too, when spring comes, the birds would sit on them and sing sweetly for the children.
One day the Giant came back. He had gone to visit his friend and had stayed with him for seven years. When he arrived home, he saw the children playing in the garden.
“What are you doing here?” he cried angrily, and the children ran away.
“My own garden is my own garden,” said the Giant. “I will allow(允许)nobody to play in it but myself.” So, he built a high wall all round it.
The poor children now has nowhere to play. They often talk about the beautiful garden inside of the Giant’s land. “How happy we were there.” they said to each other.
Then the Spring arrives all over the country. Only in the garden of the Giant is it still winter. The birds do not care to sing in it as there are no children, and the trees forget to blossom. The only ones who are pleased are the Snow and the Frost(霜). “Spring has forgotten this garden,” they cried, “so we will live here all year round.”
“I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming”, says the Giant, as he sits at the window and looks out at his cold white garden. “I hope there will be a change in the weather soon.”
But the Spring never comes, nor the Summer. The Autumn gives golden fruit to every garden except(除了)the Giant’s. “He is too selfish(自私的).” she says. So, it always remains the Winter there.
