Almost everyone has a cold every year. There are a lot of people who catch a cold a few times a year. Colds are a kind of common illness, but there isn’t a medicine which can cure colds perfectly. When we have a cold, we usually take different medicines to relieve some symptoms (症状) like sore throat, a runny nose or a fever. In fact, the medicines are not for colds but for symptoms.
Good news! There will be a new medicine for common colds soon. Some scientists spent many years trying to develop medicines for common colds, but lots of them failed.
It’s not easy to develop medicines for common colds because there are hundreds of different cold viruses (病毒). What’s more, the viruses change very quickly. Different viruses can cause different symptoms. Some viruses can make people have a fever. Some viruses can make people cough. Other viruses can give people a running nose.
The new medicine can not only cure colds but also help people with breathing problems. For example, colds usually make people with asthma (哮喘) more serious, but the new medicine can make them feel a little better.

That night, I just had a strong desire (渴望) to let Mom and Dad know how much I loved them, how much they meant to me, and how thankful I was for what they gave me. Because I was too shy to tell them my feelings face to face, I wrote the note and put it on the desk in their bedroom. I imagined how they would feel after they read the note thousands of times before going to bed.
Early the next morning, I heard a soft knock at my door. As soon as I opened the door, I found my mom and dad standing outside. They kissed me and thanked me for the note. Mom said that she was thinking I was a little child, but to her surprise, I grew into a young boy unconsciously (不知不觉地). Dad said he was happy that I could share my true feelings with them.
Seeing the smiles on their faces made me laugh happily. At the same time, I was surprised that my simple words could touch them so much. On that day, I saw my dad cry for the first time. The beautiful memory (记忆) stayed in my heart from then on.

A father and his son went to a kite-flying festival. The son was full of joy when he saw the sky filled with colorful kites. He wanted to fly a kite, too. The father then bought a kite for him.
The son started to fly the kite. Soon, his kite was high up in the sky. After a while, he said, “Father, it seems that the string (线) is stopping the kite from flying higher. If we cut it, the kite will be free and fly even higher. Can we cut it?” The father cut the string. The kite started to go higher. This made the little boy happy.
But then, slowly, the kite started to come down. And finally it fell to the ground. The son was surprised to see this. He asked his father, “I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher. Why did it fall down?”
The father explained, “The string was not stopping the kite from going higher, but was helping it stay in the sky. You helped the kite go up in the right direction using the string. But when you cut the string, it could no longer support the kite.”
Sometimes, we may feel like there are certain things that are holding us back (阻碍) and stopping us growing. But in fact, these might be the things that support us the most.
