As Xiong Chuanfa blew a lively dog out of molten maltose(溶化的麦芽糖)in just several minutes, kids looked carefully at him with great surprise, thinking he was a magician.
Xiong Chuanfa has been working on blowing sugar figurines(雕塑)for more than twenty years. In this special art form, the artist heats the syrup(糖浆)to a certain temperature, pulls off a small amount. makes it into a ball with an open center, presses the open area together and stretches it to form a tube. Then he blows air into the tube and makes it into different shapes. The traditional folk art has been listed as a state-level intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产).
Every morning, Xiong prepares the molten syrup and drives to start his “magic show” around his city. “Many people, especially kids, are interested in this sugar art. After all, the ancient art is gradually disappearing,” Xiong said. Simon, from Australia, was interested, too. Simon couldn’t resist trying to make one himself. However, he couldn’t get the wanted shape though he tried several times. “It looks simple, but actually it’s very difficult to master the skill,” he said. With Xiong’s help, Simon finally saw a horse gradually taking shape. He couldn’t help expressing his excitement at how a pot of sugar syrup has been turned into something amazing.
Xiong said that blowing sugar figurines can date back to the Ming Dynasty and that his family has passed down this art for four generations. “My 6-year old son often blows up a balloon—like sugar figure, just like I used to do as a child.” he said, Xiong’s wife Wang Li is an artist of the sugar painting, which is a form of traditional Chinese folk art that uses hot, liquid sugar to make 2-D objects.
“None of the cultural heritage left by our ancestors should be lost. They should be spread around the world,” Xiong said. The couple often show their skills beside colleges to draw the young closer to the traditional art and allow them to experience its charm. “Sugar paintings and sugar figurines are childhood memories of several generations of Chinese people. We try to combine paper-cutting skills and modern elements(元素) with sugar figurines while keeping a balance between beauty and taste. We will spend the rest of our lives helping pass on this intangible heritage,” Xiong said.

Think about what is happening in many families: Kids come home, jump onto the sofa, get lost in the world of the TV screen and become couch potatoes. Now, a new law is making parents take responsibility for family education to help shape their children’s future.
Called the Law on Family Education Promotion(《家庭教育促进法》), it is the first of its kind in China and came into effect on January 1st, 2022. It encourages parents and guardians to educate their children properly.
The law stops parents and guardians from placing too much pressure on their children. Parents and guardians should allow children enough time to study, rest, play and exercise, and make sure they don’t become addicted(上瘾的)to the Internet. They should treat all children, whether boys or girls, healthy or disabled, the same way and should never use violence(暴力) towards children.
For children of migrant workers in rural areas, they may be left alone while their parents go to work in cities. The law asks local governments to keep a close eye on such families, and help the parents get jobs locally so that they can be more responsible for their children’s education.
Family education affects the future of the country, says Sun Hongyan, head of youth and children research at the China Youth and Children Research Center. Now, with the new law, family education is no longer just a family matter but a state one. Parents who fail to educate their children properly might be breaking the law and will be given a warning.

The sun is so important that it makes life on our planet possible. But how does the sun do that? It’s the sun’s energy.
Energy from the sun is called solar energy(太阳能). It comes in the form of light or heat. People have used solar energy for thousands of years. The sun’s energy can be used to heat water and even food. If you own a magnifying glass, your parents have probably warned you not to leave it in the sun. Solar energy can actually make the magnifying glass burn objects underneath it causing a fire. This type of energy from the sun is called solar thermal(热的)energy.
We can also turn the sun’s light into electricity. This is done with solar panels(板). Solar panels are made up of a material called silicon(硅). The silicon is heated and formed into very thin wafers(晶片). When the sunlight hits the solar panel, the electrons in the silicon move and flow through wires(电线). Using this technology, we can run a calculator and even power cars.
But what happens on cloudy days? The electrons in the silicon will stop moving, which means the electricity can’t flow. But this doesn’t mean that solar energy can only be used on sunny days. People can use the batteries(电池) which are attached to(附着于) solar panels to store the electricity. So the stored electricity can be used to power cars at night or on cloudy days.
Did you know that solar energy is not as expensive as it used to be? In fact, in the last few years, solar panels have become much more affordable for people to use. Since the sun gives off more energy in one second than people have used, imagine what we could do if we used the sun’s energy to power our planet.

ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot(聊天机器人) tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with their homework.
Developed by the US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is powerful. You can ask it to write stories and e-mails, create recipes and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example. New York City public schools stopped students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on assignments. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread wrong information. Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to prevent the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.
However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are making policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, the headmaster at Cambridge University in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told the school newspaper of the university. What we need to do is adapt(使适合) our learning, teaching and examinations. That way, we can have honesty while recognizing the use of the tool.
51. What is ChatGPT?52. How many students have used ChatGPT to help with their homework in the US survey?
53. What does the underlined word “banned” in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese?
54. How do some college teachers in the US prevent the use of ChatGPT?
