Being able to speak a foreign language is one of the most useful skills I have ever learned.
It has allowed me to travel, meet new people and learn so much more about different cultures and traditions. In this way, it has helped me to open my eyes and my mind to everything that is going on in the world, rather than just in the UK.
I started learning French at the age of 11 and German at the age of 13. I still study German now, and over this summer I hope to pick up my French again, as I will be teaching both next year. I can’t wait to pass on my knowledge of languages to other people. To this day I am still happy with my decision and hope that in the future more students will make the same choices as I did.
I have recently realised just how much you can do with a language, especially in the world of work. If you speak another language and ask someone to name the jobs you can do, what they always say are: teacher, translator or interpreter(翻译员). However, now knowing another language is an advantage in about any job you can think of. Most businesses will have offices abroad or will want to do business with other countries, and for that reason they need people who know other languages.
So it is clear that speaking languages is very useful, and although it might be difficult to learn a foreign language well at first, it is always worth it in the end.
24. How old was the writer when he started to learn French?A.6. | B.11. |
C.13. | D.21. |
A.A teacher. | B.A translator. |
C.An interpreter. | D.A businessman. |
A.all of the students | B.none of the students |
C.some of the students | D.only some teachers |
The Power of a Smile
I had an interesting experience at my children's school this week. About six months ago, a crazy father was driving his car half on the sidewalk at a fast speed along the road into the school. I was frightened and had a conflict (冲突) with him, telling him his driving was dangerous.
Two days ago, I was walking along the road into the school, actually a foot or so on to the road because the sidewalk was full of kids, and I saw this same man sitting at the wheel of his car about 10 metres in front of me. He looked at me angrily, started up the engine and speeded past me. So close to me that the car almost brushed my coat. It was obvious he did it purposely, to try to frighten me. I hit his car with my son's school bag hard as it went by. I called the police and they told me I should get his licence (执照) plate number and they would go round and talk to him.
This morning I was walking up to the school gate with my kids and the guy got out of his car and walked up to me. I knew he was going to confront (对质) me. "Next time I'm going to run you over," he said to me.
And for some reason I smiled. "You nearly ran me over two mornings ago." I said.
Then his manner suddenly changed, became less confrontational, "I'm not going to be dirty, because you smiled."
Did I? I didn't even realize that I had.
"I shouldn't have done it." he said. "I shouldn't have tried to make fun of you, by pulling my foot down so hard. I won't do it again. "
"Okay. Let's just stop it there then." I said.
He put his hand on my shoulder, and for some reason without thinking about it. I put an arm around him.
How strange! It shows how powerful a smile can be and how quickly conflict can turn to empathy (同理心), if you deal with it with a non-confrontational attitude.
27. The writer told the crazy father his driving was ________ about six months ago.A.careful | B.slow | C.dangerous | D.funny |
A.save the time | B.pick up his son | C.get his son's bag | D.frighten the writer |
A.the writer smiled to him | B.the writer was powerful |
C.the police talked to him | D.the kids stopped him |
After speaking to a number of foreigners, you might be forgiven for thinking that no question could be ruder than “How old are you?”.
Yes, asking a person’s age will likely get you into trouble, especially if you ask a woman. However, money is just as difficult to ask about as age.
In western countries, a person’s salary (薪水) is as private as his or her age. US manners expert Thomas P. Farley explained why it was a taboo (禁忌). “So much of who we are is based on what we do professionally (专业地), and by extension (引申开来), what we earn,” he told Forbes magazine. “In American society, much of the respect we get from others is tied to what we earn. So the subject can be touchy.”
But maybe you are feeling brave and still want to try to find out how much your foreign friend earns. How can you ask the question tactfully?
Do not ask, “How much money do you make?” The most likely reply will be, “That’s none of your business.” You may then feel bad. Without knowing, you will have made a big cultural mistake. Get over it and try again another time.
Ask the person, “What do you do for a living?” or “What’s your job title?” Most people will be happy to give you an answer. After they tell you their job titles, you can make a rough (粗略的) guess at their salary based on the average salary for someone.
Once you learn their job titles, you could say, “That’s interesting. I’m thinking about a career in that line of work. Can you give me a rough idea of what the pay is like?” You have a better chance of getting information with a question like this than with a direct question.
Of course, there are people who choose to avoid answering the question and reply by saying, “Oh, I get by.” Some might jokingly reply, “Not nearly enough.” At this point, it’s best to change the subject. After all, money isn’t everything.
30. What does the article mainly talk about?A.How to deal with sensitive (敏感的) questions. |
B.How to ask foreigners about their salary. |
C.The skills of asking some unpleasant questions. |
D.Private questions that foreigners don’t like to discuss. |
A.in the US, salary is linked to ability |
B.money plays an important role in social status (地位) |
C.how much you earn often shows what kind of life you live |
D.a person’s profession often affects opinions about his or her salary |
A.directly | B.honestly | C.skillfully | D.clearly |
A.some people are glad to be asked about their earnings |
B.you might not get a specific answer even with a tactful question |
C.you should avoid asking about a person’s salary in the first place |
D.the writer suggests replying to a sensitive question in a humorous way |

A History of English...in Five Words
In 1582, Richard Mulcaster, headmaster of a British school, wrote that the English would not go beyond their island. However, it didn't stay that way. Today, English is spoken all over the world.
English is a colorful and diverse (多样的) language that long has picked up words from many other languages. Here are five words that show the English language’s interesting history. English
English began in the language spoken by the early Germanic people in the fifth century AD. It is from them that the word “English” comes. First it is the Latin word Angli which means the people of Angul, where the Germanic people were from.
Beef
Although roast beef is seen as a traditional English dish, the word “beef” was introduced from the French boeuf during the Middle Ages. It was one of a group of words, including pork and mutton, that were taken from the speech of the French who moved in Britain following the Norman Conquest (诺曼底登陆) of 1066. However, the farmers who kept these living things continued to call them by their old English names: cow, pig and sheep. This difference passes on till today.
Dictionary
Dictionary is a borrowing from Latin dictornarius liber, “book of words”; It first appeared in English in the 6th century, along with a huge number of other words from Latin and Greek. The first English dictionary was written by Robert Cawdrey in 1604. Cawdrey focused only on the difficult words whose meanings would have caused problems for those not educated in Latin and Greek.
Tea
Tea was brought into Britain early in the 17th century, becoming very popular by the 1650s. By the 18th century it had become a symbol(标志) of fashionable society and a best-selling of the coffee house culture.
The word tea rises from the Chinese word cha. A love of tea is so ingrained (根深蒂固的) in British life that the expression “cup of tea” has come to stand for anything viewed positively. The saying “It’s not my cup of tea.” means: I don’t like it.
Emoji
Emoji began developing in Japan in the 1990s for use by teenagers: the word “emoji” comes from the Japanese e “picture” + moji “letter”. Its successful acceptance in English has been helped by its similarity to words with the e-prefix (前缀) like e-mail. The Unicode Consortium’s (统一码 联盟的) official lists emojis and their meanings, but users keep finding creative new ways to employ them. Emojis are just another example of the development and diversity of English.
