How long is sanshe in the idiom tuibi sanshe(退避三舍)?

In ancient times, she was a unit of distance(距离). One she is as _________ as 30 li. One li is 500 meters and 30 li is 15,000 meters. So sanshe is 45 kilometers.

There is a story behind this idiom. During the Spring and Autumn Period(770 BC—476 BC), Prince Chong’er of the Jin State ran away from his home state. He _________ to travel to other states.

Once, he went to the state of Chu. King, Chengwang of Chu saw him as an important guest and _________ him a feast(盛宴). He asked Chong’er, “If you rule state of Jin one day, how would you thank me?” “It seems your state has everything you want. I have nothing that you like,” Chong’er said. However, the king _________ asked for something. Finally, Chong’er said, “I would ask my soldiers to retreat(撤退)sanshe if we ever fight.”

Ray was a naughty(淘气的) student. But he was smart and hard-working. And he never lost a race or a chess game. He always came first in school. He was so pleased with himself that he would always refuse to help others.

“Ray, are you able to go to the market and buy some eggs?” asked his mother. Ray gave an excuse and refused, “Sorry, Mom. I would be busy with my homework.”

Jack, one of Ray’s friends, wanted his help and asked, “Please help me solve this math problem.” “You must use your brain and solve it yourself.” replied the arrogant(傲慢的) Ray. Only one thing was important to Ray. His precious(珍贵的) pen! He considered it as his lucky pen. But one day Ray lost the pen.

Worried Ray looked everywhere for the pen, but couldn’t find it. Helplessly, he went to his mother for help, “Mom, I lost my lucky pen! Please help me find it. I have a test tomorrow.”

His mother ignored(不理睬) his request and said, “I’m sorry. I’m going out with Aunty Christme.”

With tears rolling down his eyes. Ray asked his friend for help, “I have lost my lucky pen. I cannot finish the test without it. Please help me find it!” “I’m sorry, Ray. I have to revise for tomorrow’s test. I don’t have time to waste.” Jack replied.

Ray sat at his desk, crying his eyes out, when his mother walked in to give his lucky pen to him. “I found it under the sofa in the drawing room.” said his mother.

“Many thanks. Mom!” said Ray. And thus, Ray learnt his lesson.

After that day, Ray helped everyone when possible for him.

In Pontevedra, Spain, people don’t shout. Since cars are not allowed in the city, there are no horns（喇叭）or noises from car engines. People don’t have to try hard to make themselves heard. What you hear in the street, instead, is the singing of birds.

“Listen,” says Miguel Lores, the mayor（市长）, opening the windows of his office. From the street below rises the sound of human voices. “More than 14,000 cars used to pass along this street every day. There were more cars passing through the city in a day than people living here.

Most local people like the change. Ramiro Armesto, a mother of two young children, said, “In the past, the first thing to see in the morning was traffic jams. Now, the city is cleaner, quieter and safer.” Raquel Garcia, another parent, said she had stayed in many cities around the world. However, she had never lived in a city as “easy to live in” as Pontevedra. “Even if it’s raining, I walk everywhere. The feeling is wonderful,” she added.

The right way to breathe（呼吸）during exercise

Exercising is great for your health-everyone knows this. However, simply exercising isn’t enough. It needs to be done properly.

While exercising, making sure your breathing is correct is very important. Naturally, we breathe through our nose.     34     Not really.

Breathing through your nose has its advantages. Your nose hair acts like an air filter（过滤器）. Breathing through your nose also warms and moistens（使……湿润）the air. However, when you exercise, you should always make sure that you are taking in enough oxygen（氧气）. You can breathe through your nose while doing lighter exercise like yoga. During more heavy exercise, such as running, it is better to breathe through your mouth.

However, most people usually take quicker breaths while doing any heavy exercise.     36     Quicker breathing is not a proper way of breathing. This can cause dizziness（头晕）and other health problems.

In fact, while doing exercise like running, one should breathe in a 3:2 ratio（比率）. This means that for the first three steps, the person should be inhaling（吸气）deeply. For the next two steps, the person should be exhaling（呼气）fully. In this way you can take in the largest amount of oxygen.

    37     While we often breathe through our nose, breathing through our mouth is a good choice as well. Sometimes people use both their nose and mouth to breathe. While doing any exercise, your breaths should be deep, rather than quick. This will help you to burn more fat and keep you fitter.

Try to eat less meat. It’s a surprisingly simple way we can all use to help save the planet. Try with one day a week to get you start, and then expand to more days when possible.

·Cut down on the air conditioner（空调）

Whenever you can, go green and open the window for some natural air. If you can’t live without your air conditioner, set in at between 25℃ and 27℃ for the most energy-efficient（节能的）temperature.

·Wise up to（意识到）recycling

You don’t need us to tell you how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle. Becoming a less “throw away” society is a great message to pass on. Don’t throw away perfectly good things just because you are sick of them, or no longer use them. Instead, give them to others or list them on a free collection site online.

·Know more about nature
