Memory is the brain’s ability to remember the past. It falls into three types: sensory, short term and long term(感觉记忆、短期记忆和长期记忆). When you look at a page of a magazine, close your eyes and try to remember what it looks like. Your ability to remember what this page looks like is an example of your sensory memory. Sensory memory takes information from the environment, through human senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. Sensory memory can take a lot of information, but information is only stored for a very short time, from 0. 5 to 4 seconds.
Can you remember the last thing you did before reading this passage? That’s your short-term memory. Its lasting time is about 5 to 10 seconds unless you actively try to remember information by repeating it. So the less important things may decay over time while more important things can end up in the long-term memory. Long-term memory is where you hold all your memories. One goal of learning is to get information into long-term memory, so you can use it later.
Your senses are receiving information all the time. Electrical and chemical signals(电信号和化学信号)travel from your eyes, ears, nose, touch and taste senses and the brain(大脑)then tries to understand these signals. In this way, you are going through the experience of remembering things.

Dr Maria Sherman talked to students about an astronaut’s life in space at the Space Museum on Wednesday.
Every morning you get up, wash your face, brush your teeth and have breakfast. These actions are so common that you don’t think about them much. But what if you were in space? There is no gravity(重力)there, so things are not as heavy as they are on Earth. When you drop something, it doesn’t fall to the floor. So how do astronauts drink in space?
Well, astronauts eat and drink differently in space. They have special plates so that their food doesn’t fly away. They use special bags for drinks so that the drinks stay inside.
Sleep is also different in space. Astronauts tie(绑)themselves to the wall so that they don’t fly around when they are sleeping. The sun rises and sets very often. The astronauts have alarm clocks to wake themselves up.
Exercise is important for astronauts as well. Since there is no gravity, astronauts’ muscles become weak very quickly. They have to exercise on special machines every day to prevent this from happening.
However, it is not all hard work in space. When they are not doing science experiments, writing reports or exercising, there is a little time for fun. They watch movies and read the news.
46. Why are things lighter in space than they are on Earth?47. What will happen to the food if astronauts don’t eat it on special plates?
48. Where do astronauts sleep?
49. How do astronauts train their muscles?
50. What do astronauts do for fun?
