Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang has a long history of making kites. According to local artisans (工匠), the Weifang kite-making can date back to 2,000 years ago. At first, they were often used for measuring distance and communicating. During the Ming Dynasty (1368 — 1644), kites started to be popular among ordinary people as entertainment (娱乐).
Yang Hongwei, 56, was born into a kite-making family. Yang often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her grandfather’ workshop. “Every time I see these beautiful kites, my sadness and down feelings go away,” said Yang. Yang started to learn the skill from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing the skill for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.
On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common style like butterflies and swallows, but also some print telling Chinese traditional stories, legends and history. Yang said that each woman had different characters in appearance, clothing and the makeup style. To create their images, she spent much effort and time checking historical records or discussing the details with experts.
In her spare time, she also travels to different countries including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zeal and to tell people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways of making kites. “I’m an inheritor of the culture. It’s also one of my important jobs to spread the heritage around the world and onto the next generation (一代人)” she said.

You might have seen beautiful rainbows(彩虹) in the sky before. They form when sunlight falls on water drops in the air. But in fact, moonlight ban also create rainbows in the same way. They are called “moon bows”. They are similar to rainbows, but they are created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.
Moon bows are more unusual than rainbows. Weather and astronomical(天文的) conditions have to be just right for moon bows to be created. The moon has to be very low in the sky. The moon period has to be a full moon or nearly full. The sky must be very dark for a moon bow to be watched clearly — any bright light can obscure it. Water drops must appear in the air in the opposite direction of the moon.
Moon bows appear on the opposite side of the moon and usually look white to the human eye. This is because their colors are not bright enough to be noticed.
Moon bows more often appear in some locations around the world. Mat of these locations usually have waterfalls(瀑布). They create thin fog(薄雾) in the air.. Some of these locations are the Yosemite National Park in California and Cumber land Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky and Waimea in Hawaii, US.
