Andrew was smart when he was young. He liked doing things in a way that he thought to be clever. But sometimes he made wrong choices.

One day, his father gave him ten dollars and asked him to buy some goldfish. When he got to the market, he found that the killifish(鳉鱼) looked like small goldfish, and they were much cheaper. So he bought some killifish and kept the rest of the money for himself.

When he got home, his father realized what Andrew did at once. He put the fish in the tank(鱼缸) without saying anything at first. He knew his son didn’t buy the right fish. At the same time, he thought his son might have an advantage in marketing(市场销售). And he should think of a way to help his son grow well. He had an idea. Then he said to his son, “Andrew, do you know what you bought yesterday? Are they goldfish?” Andrew didn’t know what to say. His father continued, “I’m glad you know how to save money. But it’s not right to be dishonest. You should do things honestly, or others won’t trust you.” Then he helped Andrew start with some chores, like buying daily things, helping his uncle in the store and managing his own pocket money. Later, Andrew worked as a salesman. He felt himself strong in marketing and kept working hard at it. Finally, he became a successful businessman.

Several years later, when talking about the key to his success, Andrew said, “Thanks to my father, I got to know myself well and developed in a right way.”

Some people believe that schools will no longer be necessary in the near future. They say that because of the Internet and other new technology, there is no longer any need for school buildings, classes or teachers. Perhaps this will be true one day, but if the world has no schools, I can’t imagine how our society will be. In fact, we should learn how to use new technology to make schools better. We should invent a new kind of school that is linked(链接) to libraries, museums, science centres, labs and even companies. Technological companies should create(创造) learning programs for schools. Scientists could give talks through the Internet. TV networks and local(本地的) stations could develop programs about things students are studying in school. Labs could set up web sites to show new technology so students could see it on the Internet.

Is this a dream? No. There are already many cities where this is beginning to happen. Here the whole city is linked to the Internet, and learning can take place at home, at school, and in the office. Businesses provide programs for the schools and the society. The schools provide computer labs for people without their own computers at home. Because everyone can go on the Internet, older people use it as much as younger ones, and everyone can visit faraway libraries and museums as easily as nearby ones. How will this new kind of school change the usual way of learning? It is too early to be sure, but it is very exciting to think about it. Technology will change the way we learn; schools will change as well; and we will all learn something from the Internet.

Maria Eduarda is a young girl from Brazil. Fourteen years ago, she was 7 years old. She loved dancing and always made everyone happy. But one day, she had a health problem and had to go to the hospital. Her parents took her to Hospital Brasilia. At first, she was afraid. The doctors there often encouraged her.
