Wu Haotian is a student from Shanghai. His parents are both medical workers. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic(大流行病)in Shanghai in April this year, his parents were on the front line, leaving Wu at home alone.
Wu was in the ninth grade at that time and was about to take the high school entrance exam. Wu not only had to study hard, but also needed to cook himself three meals a day and do all the housework. “I made some rules, including when to get up, when to take online classes and do homework, and when to cook and do exercise. Following these rules strictly made everything go well,” Wu said.
Although not all ninth graders experienced this at the time, many still felt the impact(影响)of the pandemic.
“I also studied online for nearly two months,” said Liu Jiawei from Songyuan, Jilin. “The most difficult thing was that I couldn’t be as focused(专注的)as in the classroom. It was not that easy to ask teachers for help, either.” This made Liu nervous about zhongkao. “But I kept telling myself that all the students of my age in this city were facing the same difficulties, so there was nothing to be afraid of,” he said.
Both Wu and Liu agreed that no matter what difficulties we meet with, as long as we can be self-disciplined(自律的)and complete tasks step by step, we will finally solve the problems well.

In 1829, Laura Bridgman was born into a farming family in the US. At the age of 2, she had a bad fever and after that, she couldn’t hear or see any more. For a deaf-blind(又聋又盲的) person, communication was a big problem. She developed an easy sign language but still couldn’t communicate well with others. She felt sad.
When Laura was 7, a school called Perkins for people like her opened. The head of the school, Howe, had learned about Laura and wanted to help her.
“This is the best chance for Laura,” Howe said to Laura’s parents.
Her parents agreed.
Howe began to teach Laura to communicate in English. He put notes on common things like a key, a cup and a desk. The notes had the name of each thing printed in raised(凸起的) letters. Laura touched the words and the things. Finally, she was able to match the note with the correct thing. Then Howe gave her different letters and asked her to spell words with them.
Finger spelling was next. Howe taught Laura the different finger positions(位置) for each letter, and then put his fingers into Laura’s hand as he spelt words. After practising for thousands of times, Laura could talk with her fingers! She jumped up and hugged Howe with a big smile.
Laura Bridgman later taught many students like her. She changed their lives for the better.

I’m a helpless mother. My son Tom is 15 years old. 在我看来,他越长大,我们说话就越少。I feel very sad and I really need help.
My first problem is about his hobbies. He spends almost all his spare time on computer games. When he gets home, he always turns on the computer and closes the door. I’m getting worried about him, especially when his English teacher tells me he always gets low marks in the English exams. I want him to get into the habit of doing his homework as soon as he comes home from school.
Second, he likes new technology, but I don’t have enough money and I can’t afford all the things he wants.
Recently, I’ve found that he is always alone. I’ve never seen him talking to his friends on the phone or going out with anyone at weekends. That is the last problem I have.
What should I do to help him? Please give me some advice.
