There is an old saying: Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. It means that we should go to bed early and get up early the next morning. By doing this, we will be in good health. And we’ll also be rich and clever.

It’s true that our bodies need to have enough sleep to be healthy. Children should have a ten-hour sleep every night. Those who do not have enough sleep can’t do their work very well. They will not be clever and they may not get wealthy in the future.

The body needs exercise as well. Walking, running, jumping, riding bikes and playing games are all exercise. Exercise helps to keep the body strong and fit. It also helps the blood (血液) to move around inside the body. The head needs blood too. So exercise helps people think better.

One day, John read an advertisement（广告）in a newspaper. It said, “Wanted. The best salesman in the world.” John thought he was a great salesman and went to ask for the job. “I’m the best salesman in the world,” he said to the manager. “Give me the job.”

“You must prove (证明) you are the best,” the manager said.

“OK, I will,” John said.

“Good.” The manager took several boxes of sweets out of his desk. “Last week I bought a thousand (千) boxes of sweets. If you can sell them all before the end of the week, you can have the job,” said the manager.

“That’s easy,” John said. He took the boxes of sweets and left the office.

Every day and every day he went from shop to shop, trying to sell the sweets. But he couldn’t sell one. The sweets were too bad for him to sell. At the end of the week he went back to the manager, “I’m sorry, sir,” he said. “I was wrong about myself. I’m not the best salesman in the world, but I know who is.”

“Oh,” said the manager. “who?”

“The person who sold you a thousand boxes of the sweets.”

Many years ago, there lived a very rich man who wanted to do something good for the people of his town. But first he wanted to find out if they deserved(值得) his help. So he put a very large stone(石头) in the middle of the main road into the town. Then he stood behind a tree, waiting and watching.

Soon an old man came along with his cow. “Who put this stone in the center of the road?” said the old man, but he didn’t try to move the stone away. He passed around the stone with some difficulties and continued(继续) on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of them complained(抱怨) about the stone in the center of the road, but nobody tried to move it.

Late in the afternoon, a young man came along. He saw the stone and said, “It will be dark at night. Some people will come along later and will fall over(摔倒) the stone and get hurt.” He then began to move the stone. He pushed and pulled and tried everything he could to move it out of the road. But to his surprise, under the stone he found a bag full of money and this message, “This money is for the person who moves this stone from the road. The person deserves help.”

Recently, we did a survey about our students’ ideas about what kinds of things are the most important in a friend. Here are the     46    .
