Unluckily, the ship met a strong storm on the way. After the storm, the ship landed. All the pots were broken into pieces. The two men’s dream of becoming rich was broken along with the pots.

Jim suggested that they should stay in a hotel for the night and walk around the city to enjoy the sights the next day. Jack looked at Jim in pain and asked, “You still want to go around the city? Don’t you show any care to these pots? We worked so hard to make them!” “We are unlucky enough to lose the pots. We will be more unlucky if we lose happiness,” Jim said calmly.

Jack thought for a while and nodded. The next day, he followed Jim around the city and had a good time for a few days. During their stay in the city, they found by accident that people there decorated their walls with things that looked like what they used to make pots. So Jim and Jack used the broken pots to make mosaic tiles (马赛克瓷砖) and sold them to the city people. In this way, they made much money and returned home happily.

“The Wicked Witch of the West is dead!” says Dorothy to her friends.

Everyone is very happy.

“We must go back to the Wizard(男巫) of Oz and tell him,” says Dorothy.

Soon, Dorothy and her friends arrive at the Emerald City. They are given glasses and led to the Wizard’s room. But no one is there.

A voice says, “I am the Wizard of Oz.”

“Where are you?” asks Dorothy.

“I am everywhere, but you can’t see me,” says the Wizard. “Who are you and what do you want?”

“Don’t you remember us? I’m Dorothy! I’m here with my friends—the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Lion. The Wicked Witch of the West is dead and you must keep your promise. I want to go home to Kansas.”

“Yes,” says the Scarecrow. “You must give me a brain.”

“And you must give me a heart,” says the Tin Woodman.

“And I want some courage,” says the Lion.

“Is she really dead?” asks the Wizard.

“Yes, she is!” the friends all say.

“Come back tomorrow,” says the Wizard. “I must think about it.”

“No way! I’m going to eat you!” shouts the angry Lion.

Dorothy’s pet dog Toto, afraid of the Lion, jumps up and hits a big screen. It falls over and the friends see a little old man. They can’t believe their eyes.

“Who are you?” asks Dorothy.

“I am the Great Oz,” says the little man. “Please don’t hurt me!” “But the Wizard is a big head with no body,” says Dorothy.

“No, it’s a beautiful woman,” says the Scarecrow.

“You’re wrong. It’s a monster with five eyes, five arms and five legs,” says the Tin Woodman.

“No,” says the Lion. “The Wizard is a big ball of fire.”

“You are all wrong,” says the little man quietly. “__________ I’m from Kansas too. I like travelling in hot-air balloons. That’s why I’m here. The people here think I’m a wizard because I come from the sky,” says the little man. “I live inside this room and never go out. I can’t let anyone see me. I must make everyone think I’m a real wizard.”

“The Emerald City isn’t green,” continued the little man sadly. “It just looks green, because everyone wears green glasses. I have no magic. It’s only a trick! Everything here is a trick!”

Most of us cannot imagine modern life without social media(社交媒体). We use it almost every day in order to keep up with what is happening in our friends’ lives, or find out the latest information. Although it has a bad influence if we don’t use it properly, social media has done more good than harm.

The greatest advantage is that we can connect with people much more easily. We are still able to keep in touch with our friends if they are far away. With social media, friendship goes beyond geography. We are able to find friends old and new. Also, it makes it easier for us to make friends, especially for those who are afraid of making friends face to face. Are you shy? If yes, social media has probably helped.

Social media is also ideal for making yourself heard. Anyone with a voice can express it. Anyone with a talent is free to show it. Everyone is the new content creator. Moreover, anyone with a smartphone and the Internet can be a reporter. As a result, it has become much faster to cover the news than ever before.

Social media, on the other hand, can make us less confident sometimes. A 2021 study published by the Public Library of Science, found that the more a person uses social media, the sadder he feels about his own life. One reason for this is that people around us put colourful information and perfect pictures online in order to show off their best moment. So we often get a distorted sense of how wonderful their lives are compared to our own.

Social media does not cause sadness; it simply provides another tool for us to use. Is it good or bad? Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says, “What is interesting is the power and influence of social media ... We must try to use social media in a good way.” After all, you decide how you use this powerful tool.

Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is a form of traditional Chinese folk drama. It is probably one of the most ancient arts using light and shadow. It is also a mix of many art forms, including painting, music, opera and story-telling. Shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.

More than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han was very sad about the death of his wife. One day, one of his men happened to see some children playing with toys. The shadows of the toys were lively on the floor. Then he had an idea— he made a puppet (偶) of the emperor’s wife. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a puppet show. This is believed to be the start of shadow puppetry.

In the Tang Dynasty, shadow puppetry was played by many people in many places around the country. Then in the Yuan Dynasty, it was introduced into West Asian and European countries along the Silk Road. The art form became the most popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, it was played in almost every province and in many kinds of celebrations like weddings and birthday dinners.

It is not an easy job to make the puppets. Their body parts are cut separately and then joined together so that they can move freely. During the show, puppetry artists connect the puppets’ most important joints (关节) with sticks. In this way, they can hold the puppets and make the puppets walk, run or dance as they want. Sometimes the puppets could be as lively as living things on the screen.

In fact, most puppetry artists across China don’t get trained and don’t play shadow puppetry as a job. They just play it for fun and love. However, they are still experts (专家）in this field. In recent years, puppetry artists have explored ways to make this ancient art form as popular as it used to be and pass it on to the young, hoping more people can understand its importance and feel its beauty. They also get support from the Chinese government. Thanks to their hard work, Chinese shadow puppetry is becoming great again.
