Millie’s Day

My daughter Eyen is ten years old. She is in Grade Three in a primary school. She is a cute girl though（虽然）she has some strange ideas sometimes.

One day she asks me, “Mum, what is your favourite subject?” I think for a while and answer, “It is difficult to tell. I love singing, so music is my favourite. I am good at English and my PE teacher also says I am excellent. Well, I can say I don’t like science. But science is important for us, you know. So you must do well in it. What is your favourite subject, Eyen? Tell me something about your subjects, dear.”

“I like Chinese. It is easy. I like English because my English teacher likes me very much. I can’t stand（忍受）Maths. It is serious（严肃的）and sad.”

“Do you mean your Maths teacher is serious and sad?”

“No, it is Maths, not the Maths teacher.”

“Why do you think so?”

“Because Maths has so many problems（问题）! Isn’t it sad all day?”

Almost all children go to school. Some children spend most of their time at school. Others spend only hours there.

Schools are different in different parts of the world. But they are all the same in one way. Schools are where children go to learn.

School buildings can be large or small. They can be made from many different materials（材料）. Some children even go to school outside or in buildings with no walls.

Many children walk or ride bicycles to school. Some children go school by boat. In some places, children live too far. Teachers give lessons over the radio or by using computers.

One important job for teachers is to help children learn to read and write. Students learn to read and write in many different languages, like English, Chinese, Japanese and so on.

Children learn many things at school. They study maths and science. Many children study art and music in school. They also learn how to use a computer.

A home can also be a school. Some parents teach their children at home. They want to decide（决定）what their children will learn. People at schools will often help parents plan home lessons for their children.

Jack likes sports very much. He often goes to play golf(高尔夫) on Sunday.

One day, his wife(妻子)Tracy asks him, “How is your golf, dear?”

“Well, I can play it very well, but my eyesight(视力) is not good, so I can’t see the ball,” says Jack.

“You’re sixty years old, Jack!” his wife says. “Why don’t you play it with my brother Scott next time?”

“Oh, no!” Scott is seventy and he can’t play golf,” Jack says.

“But he can see well and can help you find the ball,” Tracy says.

The next day Jack goes to play golf with Scott.

Jack can’t find the ball again. “Can you see it?” he asks Scott.

“Well, where is it now?” Jack asks.

A mouse runs across the face of a sleeping lion. The lion opens his eyes and gets very angry. He puts out his paw and catches the mouse.
