Once there were two neighbors. One was an old teacher and the other was an office worker. Both of them planted the same plants in their gardens. The old teacher’s plants were simple but looked good. The worker’s plants were much taller and greener. One night, there was a heavy rain. The next morning, the worker saw his plants come off(断裂)the root(根). But the old teacher’s plants stood firmly(稳稳地).
The neighbor was surprised and went to the teacher and asked, “We both grew the same plants together. I looked after my plants better than you did, and I even gave them more water. Still, my plants came off the roots, while yours didn’t. Why?”
The old teacher smiled and said, “You gave your plants more water, so they didn’t need to work for it. I gave them a little water, so their roots grew deeper to get more water. It made them stronger.”

How do you greet(问候)your friends? People from different cultures have different answers: shaking hands, nodding, bowing, kissing on the face. But have you ever wondered how animals “say hello” to each other? Here are some examples.
![]() | Everyone knows how similar chimpanzees(黑猩猩)are to humans. So it’s no surprise that their greetings are also close to ours. The most common ways of greeting between chimpanzees are hand touching and hugging. Sometimes they also kiss each other. Some chimpanzees can even learn simple sign language. |
![]() | Giraffes hardly ever make loud sounds. Their necks can reach two meters in length, making them useful in greeting each other. When two giraffes meet, they may “shake” their necks and rub(摩擦)them against each other. This is to feel how strong and tall the other is. |
![]() | Dolphins greet one another with whistles(哨声). They can hear other dolphins from many kilometers away. Every dolphin has a different whistle. When two groups of dolphins meet, they each choose a member to “talk” to the other group. The two groups can then travel together. Unlike most of the other animals, dolphins are smart enough to learn a new language by inventing and copying new sounds. |

Her uncle, James Barry, was a great painter. And his friend General Miranda had a library with more than 6,000 books. Margaret loved reading there. Her intelligence impressed him. Years later, her uncle James Barry died, leaving her some money. It was enough to study to be a doctor.
“But a girl can’t become a doctor,” said Margaret sadly.
“Yes, you can!” said General Miranda. “All you have to do is to disguise as a boy.” Margaret really wanted to be a doctor. So she cut off her long hair, practiced speaking in a deep voice, and put on boys’ clothes. She also named herself James Barry.

How much exercise do children need to keep in good health? Every parent wants to know the answer. In the US, many people think that children should get more than an hour of exercise each day. It is the same in the UK.
A new study shows that children should exercise for their muscles (肌肉) and bones (骨头) more than three times a week. Children can do activities like climbing and playing on monkey bars—this kind of exercise is good for their muscles. Jumping and running are good for their bones. Children should also do aerobic (有氧的) exercise for more than 60 minutes every day. They can walk fast or go running.
However, many children don’t like doing exercise or playing sports outside. Today, many children like playing computer games or watching TV at home every day. What can parents do to help the children do sports outside?
Doctor Stephanie Walsh says she often sees parents taking long walks with their children as a kind of exercise, but that might not be the best way. “Although walking is a great activity, it’s really boring for children. So if you’re going to ask your children to go for a walk, think of some fun things to do along the way,” she says. ________ It’s a good idea to take them outside and let them play with their friends. If they often play together, it will become an important and interesting part of their life. Little by little, they will love exercise or sports.
