Chip didn’t feel very well. His throat(喉咙) was very sore(疼痛) and he couldn’t talk. He lost his ________.

Mum took Chip to see the ________. Dad took Chip’s sister and brother to school. Their pet dog, Floppy was all on his own. “Chip couldn’t talk,” Floppy thought ________. “I wish I could help him. I know!” thought Floppy. “I’ll go and find Chip’s voice. I’m good at finding things.”

Floppy wagged his tail and run upstairs. He ran into Chip’s ________. He looked under the bed. He found a ball, a toy car and a dusty sock ________ he didn’t find Chip’s lost voice. He started to look in the toy box. ________, the phone rang. “There are voices in the phone,” thought Floppy. “I bet Clip’s voice is in there.” Floppy hit the phone with his paw. CRASH! It fell down. A voice said, “Hello! Is ________ there?” Sull, it was not Chip’s voice.

Floppy run downstairs. He looked at the radio. “I bet Chip’s voice in in there,” he thought. He hit the radio hard with his paw. Nothing happened. Then he hit it ________ and it fell over and someone started to sing. “What a noise!” thought Floppy. “That isn’t Chip.” Floppy was upset(沮丧).

Soon, Chip came home with Mum. He was feeling a lot ________ now. “Where are you, Floppy?” he called. Floppy jumped up. He was very happy because Chip could ________ again.

How do we feel a warm bath? How do we see our friends and hear a song? How do we smell a flower and taste an apple? Our brain uses the following senses to tell us things about our world.

Sight

Look around. There is so much to-see! We use our eyes to see everything around us. Our eyes take pictures. They send the information to our brain. Our brain tells us what we see.

Sound

Sound is all around us. We use our cars to bear all the sounds and noises.Sound can be quiet or loud. Our ears send sounds to our brain. Our brain tells us what we hear.

The air is full of smells. We use our nose to smell them. Air carries smells inside our nose. Our nose sends the smells to our brain. Our brain tells us what we smell.

Taste

Foods we eat can be sweet, sally, sour(味蕾). They send information about food to our brain. Our brain tells us what the taste is.

Touch

How do you know if something feels hot, cold, soft, or scratchy(扎人的)? We use parts of our skin to touch. Our skin sends our brain information about things we touch. Our brain tells us how things feel.

I know it isn’t a good excuse for what I did, but Del had never been very nice to me.

He talked a lot, and when he did, he was usually telling mean jokes. Just that morning, he called me “Germy” instead of “Jamie” when I got on the bus. The name-calling was a long and humiliating(丢脸的) story.

Last summer, I ended up in the hospital with a really bad cold, and a few kids started a rumor (谣言) saying I’d got sick by moving on my hands and knees through rubbish. I don’t know who came up with the nickname “Germy”, but Del still hadn’t let it go. I tried really hard to take no notice of him. However, it still worries me.

So when our principal(校长), Mrs. Cosgrove poked(探) her head inside our classroom and quietly asked Del to come to her office. Of course I thought that he’d done something mean to someone. After all!

DIARY OF A SPIDER (蜘蛛)

MARCH 1

Today was Grandparents’ Day at school, so I brought Grandpa with me.

He taught us three things：

1) Spiders are not insects—insects have six legs.

2) Without spiders, insects could take over the world.

3) Butterflies taste better with a little barbecue sauce.

MARCH 16

Grandpa says that in his day, flies (苍蝇) and spiders did not get along. Things are different now. Fly and I are best friends.

JULY 2

Fly came over to play today. She got stuck in our web, and her mom had to come to get her. Grandpa laughed a little too hard. From now on, we have to play at Fly’s house.

JULY 9

Today was my birthday. Grandpa decided I was old enough to know the secret to a long, happy life: Never fall asleep in a shoe.

AUGUST 1

I wish that people wouldn’t judge (指责) all spiders because of the few spiders that bite. I know if we took the time to get to know each other, we would get long just fine. Just like me and Fly.

Wivenhoe House Hotel

Wivenhoe is a beautiful hotel in the countryside.     28     It is near the University of Essex in the Colchester area of England. It is also close to Colchester Castle Museum, Colchester Castle Park, the Beul Chang Gardon.

Wivenhoe is an unusual hotel. There is a big difference between Wivenhoe and other hotels. Firstly, Wivenhoe is part of a university.     29    

    30     These young people are hoping to get jobs in the hotel or restaurant business. The students learn by helping staff in a real hotel, while their teachers watch them carefully. The students do everything, from making beds and cleaning bathrooms to preparing menus and     31    .

Today we’re going to make potato stamps. I hope all of you have fun.

I’ve just finished my first week at a new school and I’d like to tell you about it.

Molly sat in her new room. She and her dad had just moved to the city. Their old home was in the country.

Nothing was the same. The old home had a big yard. It had tall trees and a swing. Molly and her cousins would play for hours. This new home was always loud. There was nothing but traffic outside.

Her dad tried to cheer Molly up. He got a cherry pie at the bakery down the street. Molly loved cheery pie. Her aunt used to bake one each week. Her pie was warm and sweet. This pie was cold and stale. Molly pushed the plate away. “I miss our home.” she said. Dad gave her a sad smile.

A few days later, a family came over. They lived next door. Their girl was the same age as Molly. “I’m Nina. Would you like to come to the park with us? ” she asked. Molly didn’t know the city had parks. Dad said they could go.

There were no tall trees in the park. There was a swing, though! Molly and Nina played for hours. Later they shared Nina’s favourite cookies. They were warm and sweet.

Molly smiled. Maybe the city is okay after all, she thought.
