Something that I learned from both my parents was the importance of having respect (尊重) for other people. I remember one day when we were traveling on a bus and I sat down while other people were standing. My mother shouted at me, “________ at once! You have young legs and you don’t need to sit down.” At the time I felt embarrassed about being told off in ________, but now I understand. I think children nowadays have lost that respect, and it really makes me angry if I see children sitting down while ________ people are standing.

One area in which we had a lot of rules was table ________. For example, we weren’t allowed to start our meal ________ the oldest person had started. Principal (校长) Hardy of Brewer High was a busy man. He didn’t have much time to talk to Jay Stone. But Jay was on the school’s football team and he was failing math.

A player failing a subject must be kicked off the team. It was well known that Mr. Hardy had something against players—that he was stricter with them than with the other students.

When Jay sat down, Principal gave him a warm smile. “Some people say I’ve got something against players,” he said slowly. “That, of course, is not true. I treat players and non-players the same.”

Jay nodded, thinking, “Yeah, and pigs might fly!”

Suddenly, Principal’s smile and his voice turned cold. He was talking fast now. His voice seemed to be coming from far away. “Brewer High...no exceptions(例外) for players...no longer eligible(有资格的)....”

Jay could hear, but he couldn’t understand the words.

He asked Principal to repeat everything again. Only then did Jay understand: he was off the football team until the end of the term. To be on the team again, he had to improve his math grade.

Jay went very still. For a moment, he felt he couldn’t breathe.

The principal was talking again. “Very sorry…bad news…you knew you were in danger…it didn’t need to happen…you’re only a freshman…we’re doing it for your own good...I hope this will be a lesson....”

Jay held his head in his hands. When he looked up, the principal was smiling brightly. The next moment, he shook Jay’s hand and opened the door for him.

Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?

Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling (肿胀) in our fingers and wrists (手腕). Our fingers are not made for pushing small keys, over and over. Scientists call this problem RSI.

We spoke to Harriet Wilson, a doctor who treats many patients with RSI. She said we needed to see how much time we were spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10 to 15 minutes at one time, we could have problems in the future.

We also talked with Dr. Harjeet Deepa who treats RSI patients. He told us that the youngest patient she had treated was a five-year-old girl. She wasn’t doing well at school, so her parents took her for treatment. It was found that she had such bad RSI in her hands, she couldn’t hold a pencil.

As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller and their keys are getting closer. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger keys. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can also cause the same problem. So, more and more people could find themselves with RSI.

Many university students and teenagers have RSI, as they do not know the danger of spending so much time using computers, video games and mobile phones. If we don’t do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.

Wukong, Tiangong, Tianwen... Do you know where the names of Chinese space programs come from?

Wukong, the Dark Matter Particle Explorer satellite (暗物质粒子探测卫星), is named after Chinese superhero Monkey King. According to Journey to the West, Monkey King has a pair of sharp (敏锐的) eyes which can tell the difference between good and bad. The Wukong satellite is just as sharp-eyed as Monkey King to help scientists search for dark matter in space.

The name of the space station, Tiangong, means “Heavenly Palace”. In Chinese myths (神话), this is the home of Tian Di. Now Tiangong Space Station is a home for Chinese astronauts in space. And China welcomes foreign astronauts to Tiangong so that they can work together.

Tianwen, China’s Mars missions (任务), gets its name from the poem Tianwen by Qu Yuan. QuYuan is a well-known poet from ancient China. In Tianwen, he had the questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the real world, showing his hunger for truth. Perhaps the Tianwen missions will end up answering some of Qu Yuan’s questions.

If you look into more names of Chinese space programs, you will find that they all have beautiful meanings. We, the Chinese people, have a long space dream. So the naming of Chinese space program s is taken very seriously.
