When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.

Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock (码头), feet shaking, and got ready for a big meal.

Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d put our faces in the watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, sweetest part and throw away the rest.

Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth (财富) itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.

What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to hang your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.

For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.

Well, I’ve learned it again. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

Want to save the earth? Plant a tree.

What’s causing global (全球的) warming? Is it man — made? Or are temperatures simply changing naturally? Whatever the case, we can at least try to slow things down. But how?

The Wilderness Project has an idea.     61     If the earth has more trees, greenhouse gases will be reduced, and this will help stop global warming.     62     They can also improve the air quality.

    63     In Belgium, the Organization for Forests worked with farmers to help them plant more trees. In Spain, the Canopy Project plants one tree for every Spaniard (西班牙人) in order to improve the environment. In Germany, a teenager named Felix Finkbeiner has been leading a global movement to plant more trees.     64    

Now, lots of people all over the world have already been planting more trees. In fact, if everyone plants one tree, just one, it will do great good to our environment.

So what can you do to help?     65     although you need to get advice on how to look after it. Or you can join a tree planting project such as the ones mentioned above to help save the earth.

So, go on, plant a tree, and save the earth!

No one wants to overspend (花费过多) on their supermarket shopping. Preparations start before you even go into the store. Here is how to make sure you are always getting your shopping for the best price.

    66     Write a full list which includes two parts, something necessary for a living and something for fun. With a strict list, you won’t easily change your mind to buy more than you need.

    67     One of the easiest ways to overspend is buying what you don’t need. Before leaving, take time to check what products you have in the house, especially in the cupboards (碗柜). Buy what you badly need and it will help you save money before you step into the supermarkets.

    68     Keep in mind how much you plan to spend. It is possible to get your shopping for less, but you need to wisely pay attention to the products and brands (牌子) you buy to support savings.

    69     You should make a comparison (对比) between the prices offered by different supermarkets. So if you try to buy your shopping for less, compare the prices in different shops, which makes sure that you are always visiting the cheapest supermarket for your shopping.

    70     If you know your supermarket well, there will certainly be a preferred time to shop. This could be at the quietest time to make sure you get peace while working out the total cost of your shopping. And a few hours before closing helps you to get a special offer. That will bring down the cost of your shopping.

Last month some thieves (小偷) stole a valuable teapot from a museum in Hong Kong. They took the teapot to America, but the American police found it. The museum sent Mr. Chan, a member of the museum staff, to collect the teapot. On the plane back to Hong Kong, he noticed two men. They were watching him closely. “Perhaps they’re going to steal the teapot again. I must think of a plan,” he thought.

Mr. Chan’s daughter, Amy, met him at Hong Kong afterwards. Mr. Chan was carrying two boxes. He gave his daughter the pink box and said to her in a low voice, “Take this gift box home with great care.” He walked away with the brown one. The two men followed him.

Amy opened the box at home. She was expecting a pair of sports shoes, but she just found an old teapot. “This is not a very interesting gift,” said Amy, a bit disappointed. “That’s all right. Let’s make some tea in it,” said her mother. Then they found a note in the teapot. It said, “Dear Amy, call the police right now. Take care of the teapot. Love Dad.”

The two men kidnapped (绑架) Mr. Chan on his way to the museum. They opened his box and found a pair of sports shoes inside. “Where’s the teapot? How dare you cheat us? We saw you give your daughter a box at the airport. Come with us! We’re going to search your home,” one of them said.

When the thieves entered Mr. Chan’s flat (公寓), it was dark and quiet. All of a sudden, the door closed and the lights went on. The police were waiting inside.

Amy and her mother came out of the bedroom with the teapot. “That teapot is very valuable.” said Mr. Chan. “A long time ago it belonged to an emperor. He drank tea from it.”

“We were going to drink tea from it, too,” said Amy, laughing.
