When Ariel Cordova-Rojas rode her bike to the Wildlife Park, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. A mile into her walk, she saw a swan in the grass. Ariel, who had worked at the Wild Bird Aid(援助)Center, knew that swans can be fierce(凶猛的). But as she got close to this one, it didn’t move.
She was certain that the bird needed help. Ariel covered her jacket over the bird’s head to keep it calm(镇静), carefully picked it up, and held it in her arms. She made the decision to send it to the aid center. But the center was across the East River on the other side of town. She didn’t know how to carry the swan there. Luckily, some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station.
On the subway, no one seemed surprised by the unusual passenger. Ariel called the center on the way, and Higginbotham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove them to the center. There, doctors found that the swan was poisoned(中毒), caused by eating weights used on fishing lines.
The swan was carefully treated at the center. She even made a friend-another wounded swan. People all expected good news from her. But sadly, she died two months later, because of too much poison in her body.
“It’s a sad story, but the real story is just how far some people would go to save swan in the big city. In all, Ariel travelled two hours,” says Higginbotham. That’s the spirit we want in everyone.

When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock (码头), feet shaking, and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d put our faces in the watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, sweetest part and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth (财富) itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to hang your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I’ve learned it again. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

Last month some thieves (小偷) stole a valuable teapot from a museum in Hong Kong. They took the teapot to America, but the American police found it. The museum sent Mr. Chan, a member of the museum staff, to collect the teapot. On the plane back to Hong Kong, he noticed two men. They were watching him closely. “Perhaps they’re going to steal the teapot again. I must think of a plan,” he thought.
Mr. Chan’s daughter, Amy, met him at Hong Kong afterwards. Mr. Chan was carrying two boxes. He gave his daughter the pink box and said to her in a low voice, “Take this gift box home with great care.” He walked away with the brown one. The two men followed him.
Amy opened the box at home. She was expecting a pair of sports shoes, but she just found an old teapot. “This is not a very interesting gift,” said Amy, a bit disappointed. “That’s all right. Let’s make some tea in it,” said her mother. Then they found a note in the teapot. It said, “Dear Amy, call the police right now. Take care of the teapot. Love Dad.”
The two men kidnapped (绑架) Mr. Chan on his way to the museum. They opened his box and found a pair of sports shoes inside. “Where’s the teapot? How dare you cheat us? We saw you give your daughter a box at the airport. Come with us! We’re going to search your home,” one of them said.
When the thieves entered Mr. Chan’s flat (公寓), it was dark and quiet. All of a sudden, the door closed and the lights went on. The police were waiting inside.
Amy and her mother came out of the bedroom with the teapot. “That teapot is very valuable.” said Mr. Chan. “A long time ago it belonged to an emperor. He drank tea from it.”
“We were going to drink tea from it, too,” said Amy, laughing.
