School is a good place for us to study. Yet sometimes, it’s easy for us to have accidents there. Experts (专家) suggest that right safety training could avoid 80% of these accidents. Here are parts of safety rules in some countries.
In China, fire training at school is common to teach students to deal with emergencies (紧急情况) . During the training, students hurry to the playground with a wet cloth covering their mouth. Fire training is held each term. |
In many middle schools in the UK, students can choose to take a bicycle course. There, they learn how to ride to school safely. |
Most US school buildings have fire escapes on each floor. A fire escape has platforms (露台) with ladders. |
In Japan, public primary schools hold earthquake training once a month. They teach students how to escape during an earthquake without pushing. |

We have always been interested in the moon. 2, 000 years ago, people already knew it moves around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.
When scientists could use telescopes to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on the earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that had been caught in the earth’s gravity (重力) millions of years earlier.
In 1969, moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of the earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 billion years ago, something about the size of Mars hit the earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
In the future, though our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.

If you feel sad or upset, remember not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be more suitable for you. Some scientists at Ohio State University have found that sad movies can make people happier.
Scientists asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Aronement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were separated (分开). They died during World War II at the end of the movie. The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feelings, including sadness.
According to the result, scientists found out that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed this was because the movie made them think about their own lives and relationships. Compared to those of the unlucky lovers in the movie, their lives were full of hope.
“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot,” one student wrote.
Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, the leader of the study, explained that bad moods would make people more thoughtful. “Good moods are generally a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. “But bad emotions, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. Therefore, seeing a sad movie will cause you to think more about your own close relationships and value them more.”
