Venus is the sixth largest planet as well as the hottest one in the solar system. Except the Sun and the Moon, Venus is the lightest star in the sky, just like a shinning diamond. So the Romans call it Venus. |
Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Its surface is colorful, and it also has a planetary ring. Jupiter is the king of gods, in ancient Roman mythology (神话). |
Mercury is closer to the Sun than any other planet, and it is the smallest and lightest planet in the solar system, which usually appears along the Sun. Mercury is a god that delivers messages for other gods in ancient Roman mythology. |
Saturn is the second biggest planet in the solar system. Saturn’s rings are made of dust and ice. In Roman mythology Saturn is the god of time, because this planet moves slowly. |

For a long time we have learned about the 3 Rs, but now there are two more in the mix. 5 Rs are Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle in that order. The order of the Rs is also important. The closer to the start of the list, the better we should take. Let’s start from our home!
Refuse
Our lives are full of things we don’t need, and each of them has an environmental cost. Think it over when buying. Just deciding not to spend $100 on things, our family doesn’t want can save 100 kg greenhouse gas pollution!
Reduce
To reduce is to use fewer resources. Before buying for children, give yourself at least a day or two to cool off. Only buy them what is necessary to them. Always ask your children to turn off the lights or computers when they are not using them.
Reuse
Almost everything we throw away in our daily lives will become litter and harm the planet in other ways. We can save resources by reusing. Reuse means using again. Have you given away your children’s clothes to others? We can use the cloth napkins and empty cans once again or more.
Repurpose
Simply take something you are no longer using and alter it for another more practical use. Think, help your children use old newspapers for art projects.
Recycle
To recycle is to make new things from old things. In our home, anything made from metal, wood, paper and most plastics is possible to be recycled.
32. Which of the 5 Rs is the most important?A.Refuse. | B.Reuse. | C.Repurpose. | D.Recycle. |
A.Throw them away. | B.Put them away. |
C.Give them to other children. | D.Ask our children to still wear them. |
A.Spend | B.change | C.break | D.print |
A.we ought to buy things for children | B.old newspapers are useless after we reading them |
C.repurpose means to use again | D.we can recycle plastic bottles to grow something |
①Since last September, primary and junior high schools have offered labor courses. That has made students realize the great importance of labor education, encouraging students to do activities such as cooking, decorating houses and volunteer work. Some students in China were given specialized homework during the winter vacation.
②Xue Youmei, a Grade 7 student, spent the winter holiday in Guangxi doing her specialized homework. Everything about village life was novel to Xue who was used to city life. She joined her family to work in a farm field planted with Chinese water chestnuts (荸荠). Xue, wearing a pair of gloves, helped her father pick up water chestnuts in the field.
③For Yang Liqiao, a Grade 6 student, the past winter holiday gave her a new identity (身份) — rubbish sorting guide. Yang wore a volunteer’s T-shirt and recorded the situation of the rubbish sorting work at her community. Yang also invited her classmates to walk around the park nearby to pick up rubbish on the ground. Yang’s father found labor activities offered students a chance to get knowledge, which was not caught at class.
④Here are two more examples about the specialized homework. To let students enjoy play-based learning, some students were asked to work with parents to decorate their homes with New Year paintings. The purpose of the task was to develop students’ new thinking and creation. And some were required to collect physics-related Chinese poems, make an analysis (分析) and draw a conclusion.

My boyfriend Shane and I were hanging out in the subway one evening. I was talking but he was looking over at someone. Then he said he needed to check something. He walked over to a young girl who was crying on a bench (长椅). The girl had been homeless for some time. She told my boyfriend that all she wanted was to go to her sister’s house. He asked where her sister lived: It wasn’t even in the city.
Some people saw her, just handed her some money or wished her good luck. Shane did much more. He said to me, “Kelly, I can’t leave her like this. Sometimes people need someone not only to have them to believe they are telling the truth.”
We took her to two women’s shelters (收容所), but the staff at each shelter said they couldn’t take any more people. It was a bit cold, so we decided to take her home. She broke down in tears and thanked me about a million times. She didn’t know that it was Shane’s idea, she was finally able to get a hold of her sister, so she had a place to go. Shane drove her to the bus station and bought her a ticket.
This man trusted that she really wanted to go home and just needed help. At that moment, he changed how I view the world. Sometimes what people need is not just money, but people who will trust
