Harlan waited for Mr. Mack’s ice cream truck to turn down Pine Street. Nora lived next door to Harlan. She was already in line.
Mr. Mack turned slowly down Pine Street. A big sign on the side of his truck read: GUESS THE FIRST 100°DAY AND WIN FREE SNOW CONES FOR A YEAR!
“I think the first 100° day will be...” Harlan said. “Wait!” shouted Nora, “Can we guess tomorrow? We need time to make a good guess.” The neighborhood kids gathered around Nora. Soon they were all nodding and smiling.
The next day the kids shared data (数据) they found. “The weather station website lists the high temperature for our city for each day of the year, and we have data for the past ten years! We can each look at the data from one year,” Harlan said.
Nora held up her book. “Highest daytime temperatures are listed in this library book, too,” said Nora. “Now we can make a chart (图表).”
Harlan read the data carefully, looking for the first 100° day. It was June 15. Nora made a tally (记录) mark on the chart under June 15. Each of the kids found the first 100° day in their year. The next day, the ice cream truck turned down Pine Street. “I’m ready for your good guesses!” said Mr. Mack. Nora guessed July 15, and Harlan chose July 25. The other Kids all made their guesses. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a great product of Chinese people and a great treasure of our nation. It has shown its advantages in preventing or treating diseases, also in healthcare in the past thousands of years. It has become increasingly popular with people around the world in recent years.
“Traditional Chinese Medicine has so far been received in 196 countries and regions (地区).Around 30 high-quality TCM research or cooperation centers have been set up overseas,” said Yu Wenming, president of the China Association of Chinese Medicine. “A report by the World Health Organization shows that 113 of its member countries and regions have performed acupuncture (an ancient Chinese medical practice called zhenjiu in Chinese) and 20 member countries have included acupuncture in their medical system,” he added.
China has achieved marked progress in carrying forward TCM to the world. It is still in need of more open-minded international cooperation to let more people in the world enjoy benefits of the Chinese medicine, according to experts. We can offer good things of the TCM including ancient medical books and recipes(食谱) to the world by making good use of new media and online platforms. We can also organize some international shows or cultural festivals to introduce cultures and products of the TCM to the world.
Wang Qi, academician (院士) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, noted that the transformation (变革) is needed because of the changing times and different cultures. “The transformation is necessary and adding creativity in the process of the transformation is also important, both of which can gain the TCM a brighter future,” he said.

Physical education is different worldwide. What are PE lessons like in foreign countries?
At my school, we have two types of PE. One is normal PE and the other is Sports Enrichment. They are mostly the same, with a few units about sports and exercise to learn about. In Sports Enrichment, we have six units. Each one is about a sport, and during the unit, we practice key skills for the sport. At the end of each unit, we have a test. For example, for tennis, we spend the whole unit passing the ball to each other. So for the test we need to pass it at least 10 times without stopping to get a score of 100.
Yin Peixin, 13, Mexico
At my school, sports can be very relaxing. You don’t have to go to a 40-minute class each week. Instead, we get to pick when we want to play sports. Also, there are a great number of sports to choose from, so everyone can find something they enjoy. We can take lessons in dancing, swimming and rock climbing, along with ones in soccer, net ball and badminton. We don’t have exams for sports. Even the younger students with regular sports lessons don’t take exams.
Yuan Ningfei, 16, UK
In my school, every afternoon from 3:30 to 5 pm is PE time. In PE classes, students usually just do practice, like running or weight lifting in the gym. However, people in the US love sports a lot. Sports team training is another way of PE. Every school has sports teams, for example, American football, baseball, basketball, tennis, and much more. All the teams compete in different leagues (联盟)—city and state. Some students can become team managers to help the coach in team training.
Niu Hanliang, 15, US
