Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Crachit, Tiny Tim—everyone knows these names. The same goes for the phrase “Bah! Humbug!” Probably one of the most beloved Christmas stories in history, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has it all: heroes, villains, ghosts, time travel, long-lost love, and a happy ending.
The story centers on Scrooge, a rich businessman. Scrooge used to be a cold, greedy, mean, old man! The cold within him froze his old face. It made his eyes red and his thin lips blue. And it spoke out in his unkind voice. His money was his life. He hated Christmas and expressed his dislike with “Bah, humbug”.
One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is led through different stages of his life by three ghosts. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood and youth. As a young man, he loses Belle’s love to his greed. The Ghost of Christmas Present takes him to see how others are celebrating Christmas this year. Everyone is happy, even poor people. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come never speaks and silently takes Scrooge on a tour of the misery that will fall on him and Tiny Tim. Scrooge sees that he is dead, but nobody cares. He is so scared.
After their visits, Scrooge is changed into a kinder, gentler man. He spreads Christmas cheer to one and all. He never sees the Ghosts again. And people always say, “Mr. Scrooge knows how to celebrate Christmas, better than any other man on Earth.”
Scrooge has the power to change the future with his present actions, and Dickens tries to send the message to the reader: if Scrooge can change, then so can anyone.

When you open a certain mobile app, there’s usually an open-app advertisement that gets in your way. Some of these ads can send you to another app if you shake your phone a bit. And this has been causing heated discussion online recently.
These open-app ads act like “doors”—no matter which app you open, you may always end up in those apps that have more ads. During online shopping festivals, for example, users are usually led to shopping apps like Taobao and JD.
There are already a number of rules on this problem. A rule that came out in December 2022 gave specific requirements for how these “shake-to-open” ads should operate. It said that the rotation angle (旋转角度) of the phone should be larger than 35 degrees, and the time spent shaking the phone should be longer than 3 seconds. Starting from May, the ads must have a clear button to let users to close them.
However, putting these regulations into action can be difficult. The total number of apps is large, making it hard to look into every app. There were at least 2.59 million new apps in January and February alone, reported Nanfang Daily.
However, this shouldn’t be the reason for the mobile apps to step out of these “lines” and take advantage. That way, what all the platforms (平台) really get is people’s complaints. Over 90 percent of users strongly dislike such open-app ads, according to the Jiangsu Consumer Council.
Such ads hurt an app’s reputation (声誉) because fewer users may want to use them after being taken to other apps too many times. To attract the users, the apps should respect their choices and provide them with ads that they can choose to click on only if they want to.
37. What does the phrase “gets in your way” mean in Paragraph 1?A.Prevents you from entering the app. | B.Leads you to another app. |
C.Forces you to buy something useless. | D.Steals your personal information. |
A.apps that have open-app ads |

A.it’s difficult to manage the app developers | B.users really need these open-app ads |
C.apps have more new ways to present ads | D.it’s hard to make rules for all apps |
A.More ads will give apps good rules. |
B.Users mind products more than ads in apps. |
C.Apps should let users decide whether to open the ads. |
D.Apps have made too much money from open-app ads. |
