Yan Mingyou is 94, but he still works as a music teacher in Anhui.
Yan is from a small town of Anhui. He worked there as a rural (乡村的) music teacher for about 40 years. In 1990, he retired (退休). But when he learned that some rural schools were short of music teachers, he decided to go on teaching. “I usually have six music lessons at a school and five lessons at another school every week,” the old man said. To make his lessons more interesting, Yan started to learn to play the piano in 2006 when he was 77 years old. At the age of 80, Yan felt he was too old to teach music. But the children wanted him to stay. “Students wanted me to teach music. So I decided to go on teaching,” Yan said.
He doesn’t stop there. Yan also used some of his money to help students in need. Liu Dandan was one of the students he helped. About ten years ago, Liu, then a student in Grade 5, had to stop schooling because her family didn’t have enough money. When Yan heard about that, he helped the girl. “I try my best to help children in need,” the old man said.

When he visited the 1,010th restaurant, he got a “YES”. After two years of making daily sales, he signed up (签约) five restaurants.
But the story doesn’t end here. By 1963, he had 600 restaurants across the country selling his secret recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Soon he became very rich. But he still worked for KFC until his death in 1980 at the age of 90. His name is Colonel Harland Sanders.

Scientists have found that lying can be bad for your brain. It may stop you from doing other important things.
◆Hard work
When you tell the truth, your brain doesn’t have to do extra work. But lying takes much more work. Imagine you’re late for class. The teacher asks why and you decide to lie. You say, “I picked up a book from the library.” Your teacher asks, “The book I mentioned last time?” Then you must decide how to answer the question. If you say yes, the teacher might ask to see the book. You have to think of a book name. You need to make sure it’s a book that the library has. See? When you lie, your brain works a lot.
◆Expensive lies
You give your brain plenty of extra work. An area called the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) does the work. “It’s the part in control of short memories,” Jennifer, a scientist, said. That area also takes care of planning, problem-solving and self-control.
Using too much brainpower to lie means it’s not helpful for other things like solving math problems. Lying is even harder for young people. The prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed until the age of 25. So when young people lie, they’ll have a harder time doing other things, like making study plans or having healthy habits. So think twice before lying next time.
46. What does the underlined word “extra” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese? ________A.轻易的 | B.复杂的 | C.额外的 | D.平常的 |

B.Because they have too much brainpower. |
C.Because they’re still learning how to talk to others. |
D.Because they don’t have fully grown brains. |
A.Lying is hard work for your brain |
B.Telling a lie needs making up one hundred lies |
C.Lying means you aren’t honest at all |
D.Telling a lie is bad for your study |
International Volunteer Day is on December 5 every year.It started on December 17, 1985. It’s a day to honor (尊重) volunteers all over the world.
Every day and every minute, volunteers around the world work out of their own kindness and make the world a better place. They protect the environment, build schools, teach kids, care for animals...Most volunteers work without getting paid, and many do so using their own money. International Volunteer Day offers us a chance to do so.
Celebrating International Volunteer Day also lets more people know about the work and encourages them to join the volunteer team. When people see how volunteering is changing things for the better, they may want to donate (捐赠) their time and play their part.
Doing volunteer work is also meaningful. Volunteering is a good way to open our eyes. We may do something we never do and meet different kinds of people. We can talk with them and get their good ideas. Volunteers especially students can learn much from practice, get some experience and know how to solve problems.

A tortoise (鸟龟) was resting under a tree. When he looked up, he saw a bird sitting in his home in the tree. The tortoise spoke to the bird, “What a broken home you have! It’s made of old tiny sticks. It had no roof (屋顶) and looked ugly. What’s worse, you had to build it little by little on your own. Look at my house. It’s my shell (壳), which I was born with on my back. I think my house was much better than your poor home.”
“Yes, my house is made of tiny sticks, looks broken and is open to the wind and rain. It’s ugly, but I built it myself, and I like it,” the bird replied.
“I guess it’s just like any other house, but not better than mine,” said the tortoise.” You must be jealous (嫉妒的) of my shell.”
“Not really,” the bird answered. “My house has space for my family and friends, but your shell can not hold anyone other than you. Maybe you have a better house, but I have a better home.” After all, a home is more meaningful than a house.
